Unit 1 Balloon That Connects Us!

A huge, jellyfish-shaped balloon is floating in
the sky. Recently, Google released this
balloon into the sky over New Zealand’s
South Island. What is it for? Interestingly,
this helium-filled balloon beams the Internet
down to earth. This is the first such balloon
that Google released into the sky. Google is
planning to launch more into
the stratosphere to offer Internet connection
to the world’s countless unwired people. People who live in remote areas
don’t have access to Internet service. Google expects that the balloons
would provide Internet access to places such as Africa and Southeast Asia
for a much cheaper price than laying fiber cable.

The first person who took advantage of the

Google balloon’s Internet connection was a
farmer named Charles Nimmo in the small town
of Leeston, New Zealand. He used the Internet
for about 15 minutes, before the balloon flew
too far away from his house. He checked the
weather to take care of his sheep. “It’s
been weird, but it’s been exciting to be part of
something new,” Nimmo said.

Google balloons are powered by solar panel hung below the balloon, and
they can work for a day after being charged for four hours. A balloon can
offer Internet service to an area which is twice the size of New York City.
Anyone can use the Internet as long as they have a receiver connected to
their computer to receive the signal from the balloon. “It’s a very
fundamentally democratic thing that what links everyone together is the sky
and the winds,” said Richard DeVaul,a researcher at Google.

Unit 2 World's Biggest Ground Painting in Turkey

There are various kinds of records in the
world. Recently, Turkey set a world
record in the ground painting field. A
ground painting is an art form native to
Australia. It is created using
various minerals to pigment
plant material. A picture is usually taken
of the result, to preserve it for history.

On May 18, the Guinness Book of Records

registered a 12,000 sq.m (similar to the size of two football stadiums)
ground painting in Istanbul as a world record. It is said to promote Istanbul’s
host bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.

The painting is the image of a high jumper who jumps the Bosphorus Bridge
that connects the European and Asian continents, and two hands shaking
beneath the bridge. About 460 people participated in the making of the
painting, including more than 250 students. It was completed in five days!

The previous record was set in Pennsylvania, the United States, in 1998.
After 15 years, Turkey has broken the record!

Unit 3 Children Returning to Rural Areas

Children who left rural areas are returning.
It is thanks to the wide range of educational
programs offered by schools in the area.

On May 30, the Ministry of Education held a

conference. At this conference, stories were
told of outstanding schools in farming and
fishing villages in Chuncheon, Gangwon
Province. A lot of schools that offer plenty of
good educational activities were introduced.
The schools once suffered from
a decrease in the number of students and
they might have closed forever. However, now they are invigorated again
because of these educational programs.

Songyang Elementary School in

Gangwon Province is a great
example. It began a “specialized
foreign language program” a few
years ago. Since then, the number
of students
has remarkably increased, from
25 in 2007 to 110 in 2013. That is
more than four times the number
of students six years ago. The foreign language program features experience
based activities such as English theater.

“The Ministry of Education is planning to include the teaching methods of

these small-sized schools to its education policy making process,” stated Seo
Nam-su, the minister of education.

Unit 4 Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star!

We see many shining stars in the sky at
night. They always twinkle and are
beautiful. In fact, the light from the stars
has traveled very far for many years
through space to reach your eyes. What
makes stars twinkle like this? Where does
the light come from?

All stars are hot balls of glowing particles

held together by their own gravity. The
gravity of a star is extremely intense. Stars are consistently crushing
themselves inside, and that crushing causes explosions.

There is another reason why stars twinkle. We can see the light of a star
after that light passes through many layers of Earth’s atmosphere. The
secret is in the atmosphere. The air density above our planet is not the same
all the time. All the air keeps moving. That means the light from stars bends
many times when passing through the atmosphere, before it reaches our
eyes. To sum up, the air makes us see the light of stars!

Unit 5 Why Do Zebras Have Stripes?

Zebras are like horses with special black
and white stripes. The patterns of stripes
are unique. Did you know that every
zebra has a completely different pattern
of stripes? The purpose of the stripes is
to tell different zebras apart. Isn’t it
interesting? There are more interesting
reasons why they have stripes.

First, the stripes help zebras to hide from

or confuse animals, such as lions, which hunt them. Their stripes are a
perfect disguise in their original habitat, the open plains of Africa. Even if
predators can see zebras, their stripes make it difficult to know exactly how
far away they are. That is how zebras protect themselves.

In addition, their special coat is thought

to help protect zebras from the heat of
the sun! According to a recent study, it is
because the black stripes get hot more
quickly than the white stripes. So when
the hot air moves from above the black
stripes to the cooler space above the
white stripes, a mini tornado occurs. This
helps the zebras stay cool!

Lastly, new research shows that the colors of zebra stripes might also help
keep away the horsefly. Horseflies bite, and they can carry dangerous
diseases. Zebras are vulnerable to their attacks. Therefore, the stripes play
an important role in confusing the bugs, just like they confuse the predators.
Isn’t it cool?

Unit 6 Red All Over the Room!

The woman in the painting is arranging
fruit on a table. She is bending over the
table to set it, but the room looks a
little bit strange. The room is red all
over! It is decorated with red wallpaper,
and the tablecloth is also red. You can
distinguish the table from the wallpaper
only by the line of the table. French
artist Henri Matisse painted this
painting titled The Dessert: Harmony in
Red (The Red Room) in 1908.

The painting was made for a customer. Interestingly, it was

originally ordered as “Harmony in Blue,” but Matisse was dissatisfied with
the result, so he painted over it in red, which he preferred. You might think
that the painting is too suffocating with the red all over. However, Matisse
put a window in the upper left quarter of the painting, through which we can
see a green garden. Through the window we can feel the depth of the
painting. If there was no window, the painting might look very flat because
of all the red.

The Red Room is regarded as one of Matisse’s most important works. Can
you feel the intensity of color in this painting? Matisse focused on the
expression of colors in his paintings. He is also recognized as a leading
figure in modern art, like Pablo Picasso.

Unit 7 Flowers Mean Something!

Flowers are an important part of
many traditions. They can be given at
different events, such as graduations,
weddings, anniversaries, and even
store openings as a
congratulatory gesture. Did you know
that flowers have different meanings
each country?

In China, flowers are often given to

teachers as a sign of respect. Russians traditionally give flowers on birthdays.
They also give red roses on special days such as International Women’s Day.
In Wales brides often give myrtle to their bridesmaids. The bridesmaids
plant their flowers at home. If the flowers bloom, then they believe they will
marry soon.

To mark somber occasions, such as funerals, flowers are often given as a

symbol of sympathy, new life, and innocence. In countries such as South
Korea, it is common to send white chrysanthemums to funeral homes. It
would be rude in many countries to bring red flowers to a funeral!

Unit 8 I Can Fly in the Sky!

Do you know a squirrel that can fly? It is
the flying squirrel! It is very popular with
children because of its big eyes and cute
tails. Also, when flying it looks funny,
because its arms and legs are stretched
out wide, and the skin between them is
like a parachute.

The flying squirrel is a medium-

sized rodent. There are about 50 different species of flying squirrel around
the world. It ranges in size and color depending on its species, but it is a
little bit larger in size than the common squirrel. The largest species the
Woolly flying squirrel, and the smallest is the Pygmy flying squirrel.

Flying squirrels have very large eyes and

their eyesight is excellent. Also, they are really
good at jumping. They can jump about 6 m!
They are also good at running. They can run
about 32 km per hour!

They usually live in a hole in a tree or inside

dead branches. In addition, they usually eat
nuts, seeds, fruits, berries, insects and bird
eggs. Sometimes, they eat meat.

To our surprise, flying squirrels communicate with each other in a special

way. They talk by making chirping sounds and with tail movements! How
interesting!

In Korea, the flying squirrel was designated as a natural monument. It

is endangered and so it is being protected now. If you want to see this
animal, visit a zoo this weekend!

Unit 9 Joseon Relics found in Jongno-gu

A pile of relics from the Joseon Dynasty era have been found here and there
in Jongno-gu, Seoul.

On May 30, Seoul City announced that it

discovered about 200 numbers of relics
such as white porcelain jars, white porcelain
plates, and convex and concave roofing
tiles in Jongnu-gu, Seoul.

In fact, two of the white porcelain bowls and

white porcelain plates were discovered in
Jongno-gu last month. More surprisingly,
they remained in their original condition,
without any cracks or damage.

The city is currently looking for the owners of the relics at the request of the
Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA)문화재청. The CHA will decide
afterward whether the relics should be given to the nation or not through
an appropriate process.

Unit 10 A Car Made of Wood!

Cars can be a luxury item to many
people, and some cars are even
more expensive than a house.
However, to a Hungarian man, cars
can be a do-it- yourself item.
Recently, a Hungarian agricultural
worker named Istvan Puskas made
headlines with a car built almost
entirely out of wood!

Interestingly, 51-year-old Puskas made the head-turning vehicle with

nothing but wood and some recycled parts from old cars. Most of the car
comes from trees, including the suspension, frame and gearbox. The fuel
tank was made out of an old wooden beer barrel. The engine and steering
wheel are from the parts of old vehicles, a Polish-made Fiat 126, and a
Mercedes Benz, respectively.

He started building the vehicle after his wife encouraged him. He spent his
long winter break from farming by creating the wooden car. “I love to work
with wood. And I like to create unique things which attract people’s interest,”
says Mr. Puskas. “I started to work on it at Christmas and it took me four
months to finish it. This kept me busy during the winter time,” he added.

Although the wooden car can’t be officially registered according to Hungarian

laws, police permitted him to drive in his village. The car was put on
display in the market place for sale, because Puskas has nowhere to park it.

Unit 11 The Sweetest Candy in the World

What’s the most popular attraction in
New York City? The Statue of Liberty?
Or Central Park? Of course they are
fascinating enough to attract tourists.
However, here is a more heart-warming,
though maybe less fascinating,
attraction you must see in this city. It is
called the NYC Candy Cab!

The NYC Candy Cab is literally a taxi cab filled with a bunch of candy. You
can see a wide variety of candies in the cab. The driver of the cab, Mansoor
Khalid, gives out the candies to his passengers for free. When passengers
get in the cab, they see a sign which reads “No eating or drinking inside this
car. Except candies.” The passengers can enjoy as much candy as they want.
Khalid even gives a free ride to passengers who eat all the sweets Khalid
gives out.

Khalid started this after his 2-year-old son died

from a heart disease in April this year. His son
went through two heart transplants and also lost
a kidney. While Khalid spent two years taking
care of his son, he brought coffee and desserts to
doctors and nurses almost every day. “They got
so happy when in the middle of the night I gave
every person coffee,” Khalid said. “I was so nice
to them and they were so nice to me,” he added.

After his son died, he decided to make others happy like he did at the
hospital. He thought it would make his son happy, too. This is how his candy
cab was born.

“I was very depressed, losing my little boy,” he said. “Somehow, God gave
me this idea. Now (I'm) chit-chatting and time is flying by!” he said.

New York City is now full of warmth thanks to Mansoor Khalid!

Unit 12 Should Obese People Pay More for Airline Tickets?

Recently, Samoa Air announced that
they will begin to charge
heavy fliers more money to board a
plane. It means obese people will
have to pay extra money to fly. Some
think that the system is fair to
everyone. On the other hand, others
think it is discrimination
against obese people. What do you
think about the system? Here, Jace and Leah are talking about the topic.

Jace: I am depressed. I gained some weight.

Leah: Well, if you live in the regions around the South Pacific, it can be a
problem. I heard the news that Samoa Air will start charging passengers by
weight!

Jace: Oh my! That is so unfair. It is obvious discrimination against fat

people.

Leah: But you need to understand the position of the airline company. Fuel
prices are very high these days. The more heavy people use the airline, the
more money the airline has to spend.

Jace: But you can’t say that is not humiliating for heavy people. When the
airport workers weigh passengers at the airport before boarding, it would be
very embarrassing.

Leah: Come on, parcels are charged by weight at the post office. This is the
same. Your weight is just what you pay for. It is simple.

Jace: In Western countries, there are more overweight people compared to

Asian countries. The system is not effective for Asians.

Leah: But there are more and more obese people in Korea these days, too. I

Page | 36

think that it can be a good way to prevent obesity in the nation.

Jace: Well, I don’t know. The new policy of Samoa Air will make overweight
people feel really bad.

Unit 13 Crying Baby Contest (31-05-2013)

Since babies express what they
want by crying, they keep crying
until they are satisfied. Usually,
most people don't know what to do
when a baby starts to cry. In Japan,
however, it is believed that crying
babies grow fast. That’s why
they hold an interesting contest
about this time every year!

The contest, held in Hiroshima, Japan, is known as the Annual Crying Baby
Contest. It sounds a little strange, but this contest is a 400-year-old
tradition!

In the contest, parents give their babies to sumo wrestlers. Then, two
wrestlers face each other and try to make the babies cry. But don’t get the
wrong idea! They neither hurt the babies, nor put them in danger. Usually,
they growl and shout “Naki!” which means “cry!”

The rule is simple enough. The

baby who cries first wins the
contest. What if they cry at the
same time? The baby who cries
louder will be the winner.

Japanese believe that the louder

babies cry, the more blessing they
will receive by getting closer to heaven. Every year, people who want their
babies to grow strong and healthy take part in this contest!

Unit 14 Can You Hear the Scream?

A man is standing alone on a bridge, and
the landscape looks gloomy in this painting. He
is clasping his head with his hands. He looks
very frightened and horrified. Why does he look
like this? This painting is titled The Scream, and
it was painted by Norwegian artist Edvard
Munch in 1893. Is the man screaming out loud,
as the title The Scream suggests?

Interestingly, the man is not screaming, but

is trembling because of a horrifying scream that
only he can hear. Look at those two people on
the left side of the painting. They are just
walking calmly on the bridge, as if nothing has
happened. In fact, Munch explained about this painting in his diary. One day,
Munch was walking along a path with his two friends. Suddenly, the sky
turned red, and he felt exhausted and leaned on a nearby fence. He heard
an endless scream in the air, but his friends just walked on without hearing
anything. Munch himself just stood there, trembling with anxiety. Thinking
of his friends who didn’t hear anything, we can guess there was actually no
scream. The scream that the man heard was a hallucination.

We can feel anxiety, chaos, and loneliness through this painting.

Munch expressed those feelings quite well with the reddish sky,
simplified background, and the figure’s horrified expression. That’s why
Munch is called a Symbolist painter. Symbolism teaches that art should
reflect emotions or ideas.

This painting is beloved by countless people all over the world. Some critics
say that this is because we can find ourselves -modern people who are
lonely and who live in anxiety - in this painting. What feeling do you get
from this painting?

Unit 15 Brazil’s Most Beautiful Elderly Woman

May is known as “family month” in Korea
because there are many dates that remind us of
what it really means to be a family. It seems to
be no different in other countries around the
world. In Brazil, Mother’s Day is celebrated on
the second Sunday of May every year. On May
14, a unique competition was held to celebrate
this meaningful day in Sao Paulo, Brazil!

It was a beauty contest to choose the most

beautiful elderly woman in the country! About
200 women over the age of 60 participated
in the competition. A total of 25 grandmothers
went through to the final round. As a result, the
65-year-old Irenilda de Oliveira
Meneses, nicknamed “Barbie” by her friends, was
crowned winner!

According to the judges, they judged contestants

on their smile, character, and elegance. The oldest beauty queen in the
competition, 87-year-old Maria Helena Fernandes, said the pageant had
made her feel like a 20-year-old girl. Irenilda said in an interview, “We came
out here to dance, to have fun, to parade around, and we succeeded; it’s
really emotional, very emotional.” Congratulations, beauty queen!

Unit 16 UN: Eat More Bugs!

What do you eat when you’re hungry?
Some of you might enjoy munching
on a healthy snack, like fresh fruits and
vegetables. Others may grab a bag of
chips or eat a cup of ramen. While all of
these foods are delicious choices, the
next time you’re hungry, why don’t you
try a handful of insects? Not only are
they low-fat and high in protein, but
according to the United Nations’ Food
and Agricultural Organization (FAO)UN,
“Insects are a highly nutritious and a
healthy food source with vitamin, fiber, and mineral content.”

In fact, a report recently released by the FAO encourages people to eat more
insects. Their reasons are threefold. First, eating insects will
reduce greenhouse gas emissions and livestock pollution. Insects emit fewer
greenhouse gases than most livestock. In addition, farming insects does not
require the clearing of land. This
may help slow deforestation.
Farming insects is also low-tech,
costs little money, and can be done
by anyone, even by the poorest
members of society. Second, insects
are healthy,
nutritious alternatives to chicken,
pork, beef, and fish.
“They provide high-quality protein
and nutrients when compared with meat and fish and
are particularly important as a food supplement for undernourished children,”
the report stated. Lastly, the world’s population is set to grow to 9 billion by
2050. Eating more insects could combat food scarcity.

Page | 48
TTW A-2| 49

Today, an estimated 2 billion people worldwide mostly in Asia, Africa, and

Latin America consume insects as part of their daily diet.
According to the FAO, beetles and caterpillars are the most common meals
among the more than 1,900 edible insect species that people eat. Other
popular insect foods include bees, ants, grasshoppers, locusts, and crickets.
The two species of insects that are among the least popular are termites and
flies.

Doug Yanega, a scientist at the University of California, Riverside and an

expert on consuming edible bugs, also recommends scorpions and water
bugs. “Some scorpions and water bugs are yummy, and honey bees are
perfectly delicious,” he said. He also agrees with FAO’s report. “The UN
report is perfectly logical, but it’s tough to convince people.”

Are you convinced? Do you think this idea will catch on in Korea?

Unit 17 Fake Psy Spotted in France

One possible drawback to worldwide fame
is that you become a subject of imitation.
Ever since the phenomenal success of
Gangnam Style, people have been doing
the horse dance and wearing shades in
honor of the song’s creator, Psy.

But recently, a man named Denis Jae-wan

took friendly imitation a step further when
he actually claimed to be the rapper
himself at the Cannes Film Festival in
France.

He arrived with three bodyguards and wore Psy’s signature round

sunglasses and suit. He was able to fool many people into
believing that he was the real deal. In fact, he posed alongside
actress Naomi Harris, actor Adrien Brody, and basketball star
Nicolas Batum for a photo shoot.

Jae-wan was given the red-carpet

treatment and attended a handful
of exclusive, star-studded parties. He even
interviewed for a French radio station called
Radio Prestige, where he demonstrated the
Gangnam Style dance on video.

Psy was quite light-hearted about the

situation and tweeted the following
statement on his Twitter account: “Seems
like there’s another ME at Cannes…say Hi to him.”

Page | 52

A spokeswoman for YG Entertainment announced that the rapper

would not claim any legal action against the impostor. It added
that “the presence of an imposter was an invariable byproduct of

Unit 18 Painting by Thought!

There is no doubt that computers are very useful devices. We can do many
things with computers, including surfing the Internet, communicating by
email, listening to music, and watching movies.

Now, it seems that there is one more incredible thing that we can do thanks
to computers.
Recently, European scientists developed a computer program that enables
users to paint using the power of thought. The computer
program translates thoughts into electronic images. The system works by
detecting the user’s brain waves, and it paints on the computer screen what
the user thought by moving the cursor. All the users need to do is wear a
special cap, which connects a human brain to a computer. The cap can
detect brain waves.

In fact, a woman named Heide Pfutzner was pleasantly surprised by

successfully painting her thoughts. She suffers from a disease and her whole
body is paralyzed. Yet, she managed to produce a series of paintings with
this new computer program.

“This computer program is a breakthrough technology that enables me to

create images with my thoughts. It gives me the opportunity to
communicate with the world,” she said. It’s amazing that computers can
now read our thoughts! What next?

Unit 19 Should Humans Do Scientific Experiments on Animals?

Recently, Korean cosmetic companies
announced they will stop animal testing.
Some people say, “It’s unethical to conduct
animal experiments, when humans know
that the animals will die or suffer pain.” A
Russian spaceship was sent up to an altitude
of 575 km for 30 days. When it returned on
May 19, less than half of the 53 rodents, 15
lizards, and 20 snails that were on
board survived.

Danny: Did you hear that some animals returned to Earth from space?

Sally: Yes. I heard that they stayed in a Russian spacecraft for a month.

Danny: Then did you know that less than half of them survived?

Sally: No way. Isn’t that cruel to the

animals? Why did they have to die?

Danny: Calm down. Thanks to the dog

Laika, the first creature to go to space, we
learned that it was safe for humans to
travel into space. Russians set
up a bronze statue to honor Laika.

Sally: What about robots? I think robots

can replace animals.

Danny: That’s impossible. We cannot predict the effects of space travel on

humans by using robots.

Sally: What about experiments on animals in other fields? You have to

remember that, until recently, tests were conducted on animals by cosmetics
companies, to check the safety of new make-up products on humans.

Page | 58

Danny: Sally, would you rather be a subject in a clinical test instead of

animals?

Sally: To be honest, I don’t know. But animals are our friends. We shouldn’t
kill them with experiments.

Danny: That’s true. However, thanks to animals, we live in a better world

now.

Unit 20 How Did This Interesting Story Begin?

The Lord of the Rings! There is no doubt that it
is the world’s best and famous fantasy novel.
People of all ages, from children to adults, all
over the world are absolutely crazy about it.
How was John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, the author
of the book, able to come up with this amazing
story?

J.R.R. Tolkien, born in 1892, was an English

professor at Oxford University. Since he was
very busy teaching his students and writing
academic articles, he always came home late at
night.

“Dad, why do you always come home late? My friends’ dads always come
home early and play with them every day.” Tolkien’s children didn’t
understand his father. So he decided to make up a story to tell his children
in order to entertain them. When Tolkien was little, his parents used to tell
him stories, as well.

“Kids, do you want some interesting fairy stories? It’s a funny old story
about fairies, dwarves, and evil dark lords.”

Every night, he told the story to his children at their bedside. The children
were so excited about the story that they always listened carefully to their
father.

“Why don’t you write a book with the story?” his wife suggested to him.
Encouraged, he published a book titled The Hobbit in 1937. Surprisingly, the
book became very famous shortly after it was published. The publisher
wanted him to write another story. Following his first book, he finally
published a book as a sequel to The Hobbit. It was the legendary fantasy
novel The Lord of the Rings, which gained incredibly huge popularity
worldwide!
