Assessment 2 Task 3 – Worked Questions (15

Marks)
Complete the following 3 questions and show all working.

1. Find the equation of the line going through the following points: (11, -3) and (-4, 17). Use
the midpoint to
create a line perpendicular to the first line. (5 marks)

Equation = y=mx+c
m=gradient
m= y-y1/x-x1
17-(-3)/-4-11
m= -4/3
y=-4/3x+c
c= y intercept
17=-4/3(-4)+c
17=16/3+c
17-16/3=c
35/3=c
= -4/3(x)+35/3
Midpoint = ((x-x1)^2/2,(y-y1)^2/2)
=(11-4)/2,(-3+17)/2
=(7/2,7)
Perpendicular = y=mx+c
m= 3/4
y=3/4x+c
y=3/4x+35/8

2. Convert the following equation to turning point form. State the turning point and
whether it is a maximum
or minimum. Sketch a graph of the equation including x and y intercepts and the turning
point. (5 marks)
yy = −xx2 + 10xx − 16 = 0
(-xx) x 2+10xx-16
8xx-16
8xx=8x^2
=8x^2-16

3. The following quartic has been partially factored. (5 marks)

a. Define why this is a polynomial and specifically why it is quartic polynomial. b.
Completely factor the equation and solve for all values of x. c. Then, use your skills to
expand the equation completely.

(xx − 5)(2xx3 + 5xx2 − 3xx)=0

13x^2(x+√5)(x-√5)=0

x=0

x+√5 = 0 x=-√5

x-√5=0 x=√5

x=0, x=-√5, x=√5
