Vehicles!

Can I support their Math Development?

“What materials
might we need to
INVITE YOUR CHILD TO BUILD make a ramp?”
1 A RAMP FOR THEIR VEHICLE. ONLY USE A
STORE-BOUGHT RAMP AS A GUIDE
“What should the ramp
do? Get the vehicle over
something? Increase
vehicle speed?
Something else?
“How long do you think it
has to be?
“How high do you think
it should go?”
Use a combination of
short/long objects,
blocks, and a measuring
tape to explore the size
PLAN, MEASURE, BUILD 2
Model how you start
measuring by aligning
the beginning of the
objects together “It didn’t make it over the
gap. What could we do?”

“It still seemed slow.

What could we change?”
3 TEST, WONDER, EDIT…REPEAT “What do you think
would happen if we
changed the angle?”
“I wonder how we could
make it longer, shorter?”

Math Measuring
Tip tapes are great, but no need to rush
into using them. Explore how objects compare to
one another. Notice with your child, for example, how
an object can be six short blocks tall…but also two
long blocks tall?! How is that possible?
