Activity 16 “Gadgets that make our life easier”

l. Write as much as you know about them and their benefits for you telephone, electric motor,
internet, electricity, capacitor
TELEPHONE
Is a device that permits two or more users to
conduct a conversation when they are too
far apart to be heard directly.
The biggest benefit of the telephone is to
connect people around the world and make
them feel like if they were together.

ELECTRIC MOTOR
Is an electrical machine that converts
electrical energy into mechanical energy.
Some of the benefits are:
- It can be use in both directions, from
mechanical to electrical, and
electrical to mechanical.
- Doesn´t generate pollutant
emissions.

PENICILLIN
Were the first medications to be effective
against many bacterial infections.
The drug greatly weakens the cell wall and
causes baterias to die, allowing a person to
recover from a bacterial infection.

INTERNET
Is the global system or interconnected
computer networks that uses the internet
protocol suite to link devices worldwide.
Some of the benefits are:
- Informations, knowledge, learning, ..
- Connectivity, communications, …
- Work from home, …
- Entertainment, …
ELECTRICITY
Is the set of physical phenomena associated
with the presence and motion of matter that
has a property of electric charge.
Without the electricity we have nothing, no
internet, no communications, no
transportation, etc…

CAPACITOR
Is a device that stores electrical energy in an
electric field.
Used to keep control signal voltage/current
constant and ripple free as voltage across
the capacitor can’t change suddenly and
when there is a change in voltage, the
capacitor opposes this change and try to
keep voltage unchanged.

Activity 17 “Engineering designs for the future”

HYPERLOOP

l. Watch the video about Engineering in the future in the next link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llnlkMbukmA. Answer the following questions:

1) Write a summary of the video.

Commerce constantly strives to access new markets faster, moving more goods and more people,
more cheaply. That drives investment in improved transportation – safer, faster and more
economical. Technological advancements in AI, robotics and faster machine-to-machine
connectivity allow asset-intensive environments to optimize their performance, take decisive
action more quickly, collaborate among themselves and collectively learn.
Take the automotive industry. Carmakers are already reimagining the concept of transportation
using perceptual computing (machines that interact with their surroundings using five senses) and
pervasive computing (embedded micro controllers to make machines ”smart”) to speed travel,
promote safety, improve fuel economy and achieve sustainability.

As the world’s population grows, however, and more people can afford to buy automobiles and
other forms of transport, infrastructure and the global environment are coming under intense
pressure. Clearly, our planet would struggle if every inhabitant owned an automobile.

Today, digital innovation has purpose beyond commerce: to tie people together without more
gridlock; to reduce energy emissions (since even electricity generation burns fossil fuels); to get
people from place to place faster, more safely and economically; and to develop innovative
products that improve the customer experience.

2) Describe the innovation shown in the video.

Hyperloop, a low-pressure tube in which passenger pods travel at a rate near the speed of sound.
The transportation system is designed to be underground or supported on pillars above the
ground to lessen accidents and natural disaster risks. And Hyperloop proposes to cut rail and
automobile travel times between cities such as New York and Washington, D.C., by five or six
times.

3) How was the engineering applied in the design and implementation of the construction
presented?

• A pod with a pressurized cabin for the protection and comfort of passengers when
traveling at speeds of 670 mph or more

• A magnetic levitation and /or propulsion system, electrically powered. Many prototypes
make use of solar energy.

• Electrified tracks connecting various hubs and urban centers.

• A network of virtually frictionless tubes connecting major cities as well as hubs within
urban areas.

Hyperloop faces engineering challenges. Not the least of these is the effect on the human body of
rapid acceleration and deceleration while having to negotiate curves, peaks and troughs. Other
practical challenges include energy, efficiency and sustainability. But these are technical challenges
that engineers are addressing, including alternative fuel sources such as solar panels, lighter
materials, and combining magnetic levitation (maglev) with propulsion systems that convert
higher air pressure at the front of the pod into a propellant that supercharges pod performance.

4) Write a conclusion about the activity.

The engineering in the future its exciting because we don’t really know what is going to be the
new technology in 5, 10 or 15 years. The innovation presented in the video its really close to
fiction, its what people in the 80’s would never think about it, but we are. Day to day the humans
are looking to be more productive and waste less time, and hyperloop its all about it.
