CASE STUDY ASSIGNMENT:

Unilever’s Lifebuoy in India: Implementing the Sustainability Plan


UNILEVER A

For this analysis, your group will take on the role of Sudir Sitapati, HUL’s Category Manager for Lifebuoy in India.

Your task: Decide which of the handwashing behaviour change programs you should implement. What risks and benefits
are associated with each? How, if at all, does Samir Singh’s priorities impact your decision.

You will present your recommendation to Paul Polman’s Senior Leadership team (SLT), which includes both your Division
Head (COO, Unilever) and Samir’s Division Head (President, Personal Care) on July 15, 2020*. During the presentation,
your classmates will take on the role of the SLT.

UNILEVER B

For this analysis, your group will take on the role of Samir Singh, Global VP, Lifebuoy.

Your task: What is your stake in Sudir Sitapati’s decision – which option best suits your interests? What action, if any,
would you take to influence Sitapati’s decision? What would you do if he chooses not to implement your preferred
program?

You will present your recommendation(s) to your direct boss, SVP, Skin Cleansing on July 15, 2020*. During the
presentation, your classmates will take on the role of SVP, Skin Cleansing.
*NOTE: Although you are presenting in 2020, you must base your presentation on information found within the
timeframe of the case.

 Based on the scenario above, complete the appropriate Case Study Aid (Part 1 of Evaluation Scenario, Decision
Scenario, or Problem-Diagnosis Scenario) and develop an outline for your class presentation (Part 2 of the Case
Study Aid).
