of the optical instrument. Today, you are going to construct an
improvised optical devise applying the concepts of Mirrors and
Lenses.
C. EXPLORE
Product Base Activity: Making Improvised Optical Device
Students are divided into 8 groups (5-6 members each) and are ask to
do the activity “Making Improvise Optical Device? Standards in
performing activity will be discussed before doing the activity. The
activity (LM pp. 209-211) is divided into 4 types of optical device: 1.
Camera, 2. Periscope, 3. Microscope and 4. Telescope. Group 1 and 2
will be task to do Option 1, Group 3 and 4 will be task to do option 2,
Group 5 and 6 will be task do option 3 and Group 7 and 8 will be task
to do option 4.

Option 1: The Camera

Task: - Student will make an improvised
• Construct a pin hole camera and explain the factors that affect the image optical device.
on the screen - Students may also use other materials
other than the materials indicated in
Materials: the activity.
• illustration board/cardboard - Then, students must accomplish the
Problem Solving Sheet
• black cartolina, cutting mat
- Students will the prepare for group
• pin/sewing needle, glue/sticky tape reporting about their output.
• cutter, scissors, foot ruler, clear lamp
Procedure:
1. With your group mates and using the materials given, design and
construct an improvised camera based on the information gathered from
different resources.
2. A record sheet is provided to serve as your guide for accomplishing the
written report on your constructed camera. Refer to your copy of Attached
Assessment Tools: Problem Solving Sheet.

Option 2: The Periscope

Task:
• Construct a periscope and trace the incident and reflected rays.
Materials:
• 2 plane mirrors
• illustration board/cardboard
• cutting mat
• glue/sticky tape
• cutter, scissors, foot ruler, clear lamp
What to do:
1. With your group mates and using the materials given, design and
construct an improvised periscope based on the information gathered from
different
resources.
2. A record sheet is provided to serve as your guide for accomplishing the
written report on your constructed periscope. Refer to your copy of
Attached Assessment Tools: Problem Solving Sheet.

Option 3: The Microscope

Task:
• Set up a simple microscope and investigate the factors affecting the
magnification capabilities of a microscope
Materials:
• set of lenses with different focal lengths
• specimen, light source, ruler or meter stick
• thin, clean sheet of paper to serve as the camera’s screen
What to do:
1. Using the materials given, construct or set up a simple microscope. Use
knowledge learned in the previous lesson and based on the information
gathered from different resources.
2. Discuss with your group mates and agree on one design.
3. Use the problem-solving record sheet as your guide for writing the
report on how you were able to construct your microscope.

Option 4: The Telescope

Task:
• Construct a simple telescope and investigate the factors affecting the
magnification capabilities of a telescope.
Materials:
• set of lenses with different focal lengths specimen, light source, ruler or
meter stick thin, clean sheet of paper to serve as the camera’s screen
What to do:
1. Using the materials listed above; construct a telescope based on
information obtained from the previous lesson and other resources. After
discussing telescope with your teammates, design a simple telescope.
2. Use the problem-solving record sheet as your guide for writing the
report on how you were able to construct your telescope.

D. EXPLAIN
Presentation of Output
The teacher will ask each group to present their chosen improvised
optical device and explain their output. During this time, the teacher
jots down important information students’ have presented.

FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS:
Ask:
1. How do you find the activity?
2. How does your chosen improvise optical device applied the Student Response:
concept of mirror or lenses?
Answer varies

Say: Base from your explanation, your knowledge of light have lead
us to the invention of your improvise optical instruments such as
microscopes, telescopes, and cameras. Wherein these instruments
use mirrors and lenses  that reflect and refract light and form the
images. Thus, for broader idea on the concept of mirror and lenses on
the optical device. Let’s seatback and relax and watch a short video
clip on some latest optical instrument where concept of mirror and
lenses applied.
E. ELABORATE
SHORT VIDEO CLIP/ ILLUSTRATION
- Teacher will show short video clip of optical instrument like the
microscope, telescope and camera where concept of mirror and
lenses is applied.
Video clip: https://www.ck12.org/c/physical-science/optical-
instruments/lesson/Optical-Instruments-MS-PS/

Ask: Base from the video, how does the concept of mirror and lenses Student Response:
applied in the compound microscope?
Say: A compound microscope has at least two convex lenses: one or Answer varies
more objective lenses and one or more eyepiece lenses. The objective
lenses are close to the object being viewed. They form an enlarged
image of the object inside the microscope. The eyepiece lenses are
close to the viewer’s eyes. They form an enlarged image of the first
image. The magnifications of all the lenses are multiplied together to
yield the overall magnification of the microscope

Ask: Base from the video, how does the concept of mirror or lenses
applied in the telescope?
Say: In telescope, the use convex lenses to make enlarged images.
However, telescopes make enlarged images of objects—such as
distant stars—that only appear tiny because they are very far away.
There are two basic types of telescopes: reflecting telescopes and
refracting telescopes. They differ in how they collect light, but both
use convex lenses to form enlarged images.

Ask: Base from the video, how does the concept of mirror or lenses
applied in the camera?
Say: Light passes through the lens at the front of the camera and
enters the camera through an opening called the aperture. As light
passes through the lens, it forms a reduced real image. The image
focuses on film (or a sensor) at the back of the camera. The lens may
be moved back and forth to bring the image into focus. The shutter
controls the amount of light that actually strikes the film (or sensor).
It stays open longer in dim light to let more light in
( Base from your activity, which of the four improvise device best
represent mirror and lenses in terms of image produce.)
A. EXTEND
SHORT PARAGRAPH of LIFE LESSON
- Teacher will let student read a short paragraph about “Magnifying
Life’s Blessing”
Student Response:
- Answer varies
Ask: How do we use this optical instrument which applies the
concept of lenses and mirror in our real life to determine our
perspective and faith in God?

B. EVALUATE
DIFFERENTIATED TASK,
RUBRICS
- Teacher will ask student to create product base from their own
(see attachment for clear view of rubrics)
interest.
The follow are the products which the students will choose;
A. VLOGGER
Product: Using a blog, create any of improvise optical
instruments and demonstrate and explain how the concept of
mirror and lenses applied does.
B. PHOTO JOURNALIST
Product: Make a photo gallery of different improvise optical
instrument with illustration showing how the concept of
mirror and lenses applied does.
C. INVENTOR/ RESEARCHER
Product: Create Product Base Investigatory
Proposal(Innovation), wherein create a new device or
innovate a new device of optical instrument
