LEARNING COMPETENCIES
I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
- Identify the components of a DNA molecule (K)
III. PROCEDURE
A. ENGAGEMENT
B. EXPLORE
1. INVESTIGATORY ACTIVITY: ACTIVITY 9
Teacher will let the students to go to their groups, ask to perform Activity 6: DNA Modeling, page 51-52,
Science 9 Learners Manual
C. EXPLAIN
1. POST ACTIVITY DISCUSSION and INTERACTIVE DISCUSSION
After performing the activity, together with the students will check the activity
and answers to the guide questions. Then teacher will ask students about the
key concept of the activity as well as asking the students to identify the
components of DNA using the picture below to facilitate discussion
Then teacher will also ask the following questions to make the explanation interactive;
1. What is DNA? Who first discovered the DNA
2. Name the different components of DNA
3. Name the different parts of nucleotide
4. What are the pentose groups?
5. What are the nitrogenous groups?
KEY CONCEPTS TO EMPHASIZE:
DNA is composed of chains of nucleotides built on a sugar and phosphate backbone and wrapped around
each other in the form of a double helix. The backbone supports four bases: guanine, cytosine, adenine, and
thymine. Guanine and cytosine are complementary, always appearing opposite each other on the helix, as
are adenine and thymine. This is critical in the reproduction of the genetic material, as it allows a strand to
divide and copy itself, since it only needs half of the material in the helix to duplicate successfully.
D. ELABORATE
1. DNA MODEL and its components
-Using the available materials they could see, teacher will ask the students to make a DNA model with labels
identifying the components of DNA.
D. EVALUATE
____________1. Macromolecule which forms a double helix structure and considered the genetic material
of all living cells.
____________2. one of the four compounds called __________________.
____________3. a pentose sugar called _______________.
____________4. composed of the following: sugar and phosphate molecules, and nitrogenous bases.
____________5-8. four nitrogenous base
____________9-10. the complementary bases
B. Identify the components of nucleotide
