COST FOR A RCC SLAB

If you are too curious about costing and estimating while your house
construction, then article must help you.
Here we are talking only about the costing of a RCC slab, we will calculate the
amount of sand , cement, and aggregate used in slab. Further we will calculate
the amount of steel (reinforcement bars) used in the slab.
So, lets get started…

AREA OF SALB
First of all we have to find out our slab area

For example, I am taking an example of a 8m x 4m Rcc slab

In Rcc slab we use some steel bar known as reinforcement bars. For a slab the
the bar which is parallel to short side of slab is known as MAIN BAR and the
bar which runs parallel to the longest side of slab is known as CROSS BAR
So, MAIN BAR is of SHORT LENGTH &
CROSS BAR is of LONGER LENGTH

We should take main bar of Φ 12mm and for cross bar it should be
Φ10mm
Distance b/w two main bar should be 150mm & (centre to centre)
Distance b/w two cross bar should be 200mm (centre to centre)

TOTAL LENGTH OF STEEL

For main bars,

𝑤𝑖𝑑𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑙𝑎𝑏
𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛 𝑏𝑎𝑟 = +1
𝑐\𝑐 𝑏𝑎𝑟 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒

So, in my case the total length of main bar will be

4
𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ = +1
0.15
length= 27.6m
For a span of 8m length ,
Total length= 27.6 x8
Total length = 221.3m ≅ 222m

Similarly, for CROSS BARS

𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑙𝑎𝑏
𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑟𝑜𝑠𝑠 𝑏𝑎𝑟 = +1
𝑐\𝑐 𝑏𝑎𝑟 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒

A notes by Collegestudynotes.com
3

So, in my case the total length of cross bar will be

Length=8/0.2 +1
Length=41
Total length=41 x 4
Total length =164

TOTAL WEIGHT OF STEEL

Φ2
Weight of steel (Kgs) =𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑙 ×
162

In my case,

102
For Φ10mm steel = 164 x
162

Weight of Φ10mm steel = 101.23 Kgs ,roughly 100kgs

122
For Φ12mm steel =222 x
162

Weight of Φ12mm steel = 197 Kgs ,roughly 200kgs

So, finally we have to use 100kgs of Φ10mm steel and 200kgs of

Φ12mm steel.

VOLUME OF RCC SLAB

Let us consider the the thickness of our rcc slab be 4inch or 115mm.
So, the volume of concrete will be…

Wet volume of concrete = Volume of RCC slab – Volume of steel

A notes by Collegestudynotes.com
4

Volume of RCC slab = l x b x h

= 8 x 4 x 0.115
=3.68 m3
Density of steel 1m3 = 7850Kgs
1
Volume of steel = × 𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑙
7850
1
= × 300
7850

= 0.038 m3

Wet Volume of concrete = 3.68 – 0.038

Wet volume of concrete = 3.642 m3

As the materials are available in dry condition so we will calculate for dry
concrete
1m3 of dry concrete volume = 1.54
Total dry concrete volume = 1.54 x 3.642
= 5.608m3

GRADE OF CONCRETE
There are many type of grade of concrete such as M10, M15, M20, M25
These are the grade which are differenced by the ratio of cement sand
and aggregate used.
Grade of Concrete Ratio of mixtutre
(cement:sand:aggregate)
M10 1:3:6
M15 1:2:4
M20 1:1.5:3
M25 1:1:2

Generally for residential purpose we use M20 grade of concrete so we

will calculate for M20 grade concrete.

5

So the ratio of M20 grade concrete is 1:1.5:3 and the sum of ratio is 5.5

Now we will calculate for cement sand and aggregate

For CEMENT
1
𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑏𝑎𝑔𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 = × 𝑑𝑟𝑦 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑒 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 × 28.8
5.5

Bags of cement =1/5.5 x 5.608 x 28.8

Bags of cement = 29.3 bags ≅ 30 bags

For SAND
1.5
𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑐𝑢𝑏𝑖𝑐 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡 = × 𝑑𝑟𝑦 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑒 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 × 35.3147
5.5

Volume of sand = 1.5/5.5 x 5.608 x 35.3147

Total sand used = 54 cubic feet

For AGGREGATE
3
𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑎𝑔𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑐𝑢𝑏𝑖𝑐 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡 = × 𝑑𝑟𝑦 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑒 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 × 35.3147
5.5

Volume of aggregate used = 3/5.5 x 5.608 x 35.3147

Volume of aggregate = 108

COST FOR MATERIALS

MATERIALS QUANTITY RATE (₹) COST
STEEL 300 Kgs
CEMENT 30 Bags 400/bag 12000
SAND 54 feet3
AGREEGATE 108 feet3
TOTAL(₹)
