WATER INJECTION SYSTEM

Demineralized water from a customer source is pressurized by water injection pumps and
piped to the main skid through customer interface [1]. The water injection system is sequenced
and controlled automatically by the control system. The operator’s role is to ensure pre-start
checks and permissives have been satisfied, monitor the startup and operation of the system,
and respond to any abnormal conditions. A typical operator interface display of an LM2500
water injection system is shown below.

During a typical start sequence, permissives must first be satisfied to enable a water injection
system start. Typically these permissives include sufficient water supply temperature and
pressure to the pumps, and the turbine running with no shut down signals issued.

Flow Through Filter and Pump

(Refer to GE AEP Drawing xxx260)

Customer-supplied demineralized water is supplied to the water injection skids at customer

connection [79] at 31 gpm (1.96 L/s), 30-40 psig (207-275 kPaG) , 40-140 °F (4-60 °C), and pre-
filtered to 10 µ absolute. The water injection skid includes a simplex filter assembly which also
filters the water to 10 µ absolute. Pressure differential transmitter PDT-2073 monitors the
condition of the filter assemblies.
Water pressure at the pump intake is measured by pressure transmitters PT-2074. Pressure
indicator PI-2074 displays pressure readings in the range of 0-100 psig (0-689 kPaG). Alarm
PAL-2074 is activated at pump suction pressures of 10 psig (69 kPaG) or lower. Shutdown
PALL-2074 is initiated at pump suction pressures of 5 psig (34 kPaG) or lower. Shutdown
PAHH-2074 is initiated at pump suction pressures of 60 psig (414 kPaG) or higher.

The water injection pump is a positive displacement, axial piston pump, rated for a flow rate of
31 gpm at 800 psig (5516 kPaG) when running at 1750 rpm. The pumps are driven by electric
motors MOT-2075, which are 3-phase, 20 hp motors rated for 460 or 380 VAC and 60 or 50 Hz.

Water temperature at the pump discharge is monitored by temperature elements TE-2077. Alarm
TAH-2077 is activated at temperatures of 140 °F or higher. Shutdown TAHH-2077 is initiated at
temperatures of 150 °F or higher. Discharge pressure is regulated by pressure control valve
PCV2076, set at 800 psig (5516 kPaG). Pump discharge pressure is also limited by pressure
safety valve PSV-2076 set at 850 psig (5861 kPaG). Both the pressure control valves and the
pressure safety valves allow excess water to leave the skid at customer connection [3 3B].

Demineralized water passes through a 100-mesh strainer, a locked-open ball valve, and a check
valve as it leaves the water injection skid and enters the main skid via a flexible hose.

Flow Through Main Skid

Demineralized water pressure is monitored at the main skid by pressure transmitter PT-207 1.
Pressure indicator PI-207 1 displays water pressure in the range of 0-1000 psig (0-6895 kPaG).<}
Alarm PAL-2071 is activated at pressures of 800 psig (5516 kPaG) or higher. Shutdown PALL-
2071 is initiated at pressures of 950 psig (6550 kPaG) or higher.

Electrically-operated flow control valve FCV-2019 modulates the water flow according to
signals sent from the TCP. Solenoid valves SOV-2016 and SOV-2017 fail closed to stop water
flow during shutdowns, and can be opened and closed as necessary when draining and purging
the fuel manifold and water injection systems. Water injection flow is monitored by flow
element FE-2003, which sends data to the TCP via flow transmitter FT-2003. Flow is totalized at
the TCP and displayed at flow indicator FI-2003 in pph/gpm.

Water passes through another check valve before entering the secondary fuel manifold. Water
temperature and pressure are monitored at the fuel manifold by temperature element TE-2035
and pressure transmitter PT-2030, respectively. Alarm TAH-2035 is activated at temperatures of
400 °F (204 °C) or higher. CDLO shutdown TAHH-2035 is initiated at temperatures of 700 °F
( 371 °C)or higher.
Water can be drained from the secondary fuel manifold by opening solenoid valve SOV-2010.
Water that passes through this valve leaves the main skid at customer connection [7].

Gas Purge

Natural gas from the fuel system is used to purge water from the fuel manifold. Gas is bled
from the fuel system downstream of FCV-2001 through a 3/4” line. The gas passes through a
check valve and enters the feed lines to the secondary fuel manifold.

Monitoring During Operation

During operation, the incoming water supply pressure and temperature (to the water injection
system) is monitored at all times. If the temperature of the incoming water supply goes beyond
alarm setting, an alarm/shut down will be issued.

Differential pressure across the incoming demineralized water supply filter is monitored during
operation, and if it exceeds the alarm set point, an alarm will be issued.
