COMMUNICATION

Communication is schemata-driven. The use of digital online technical

Communication makes you send to or platform or the HEIs’ support staff/ help
receive messages from somebody by LMS desk
activating your schemata, experiences or
background.
Content/learning
Communication is an interpretative act. materials: online assessment
and grades
The only person who knows the exact or Learning Objects (LOs) monitoring
full meaning of the message transmitted
is the sender or speaker. printed or electronic
modules, powerpoint
Communication does not guarantee a presentation
direct or automatic link between two
minds.

These forms of knowledge become

meaningful only to others when you
initiate communication with them.

Communication is active, powerful, or

forceful.

Messages have varied effects on all

participants in any communicative event.

Communication is symbolic.

Symbols, signs, or marks like letters,

words, sentences, graphs, pictures and
other concrete objects represent or
stand for ideas that you intend to convey
verbally.

Models of Communication

What is a model?

A model is widely used to depict any

idea, thought or a concept in a simpler
way through diagrams, pictorial
representations etc.

What are communication models?

Communication Models are systematic

representation of the communication
process which forms general
perspectives in communication.

3 Standard Models of Communication

• Linear Model

• Modified by David Berlo

• One-way communication
• Used for mass communication
• Senders send message and
receivers only receive
• No feedback

PROS

• Good at audience persuasion

and propaganda setting

CONS

• Communication is not
continuous

• No way to know if
communication is effective

Transactional Model

- Developed by Dean Barnlund

- Features

• Senders and receivers

interchange roles

• Feedback is taken as a new

message

• Used for interpersonal

communications

PROS

• Simultaneous and instant

feedback

• No discrimination between
sender and receiver

CONS

• Encourages non-verbal
communication

• More noise due to

communicators talking at the
same time

Interactional/Interactive Model

• Introduced by Wilbur Schramm

Features

• Used for new communications

like internet

• Slower feedbacks in turns

• Communication becomes linear

if receiver does not respond

PROS

• New communication channels

• Feedback even in mass

communication

CONS

• Feedback can take a very long

time

• Sender and receiver might not

know who the person is

• Activity

• Assignment
