Honors for Aling Rosa
Andrea Amor Tablan
Aling Rosa was much surprised when a group
of barrio folks headed by the tiniente dropped
at her sari-sari store to say:
“ Aling Rosa, you have been voted upon as
model citizen on the occasion of the
celebration of ‘Citizens Week’ in this town.
There will be a program in the plaza
tomorrow and a sort of monument will be
unveiled. The mayor requests your presence at
the ceremonies.”

Why did teniente visit Aling Rosa?

What conclusions can you draw about the kind of person Aling Rosa is? Support your
answer.
She was a small, frail woman with keen, eager
countenance have an injured left eye. That blind eye
was one of the misfortunes that had been her share in
life. Her mother died after her birth. A neighbor fed
her on her breast while her (Aling Rosa’s) father
buried her mother in the barrio cemetery.

Two years ago a couple died from eating a botete,

leaving twins of a few months old. Rosa volunteered
to adopt those babies. Now they were toddling happily
in the backyard protected by a tall bamboo fence
against the encroaching fishpond behind it.

Not a month ago, Aling Clara, a neighbor, fell ill and

needed an operation. To have her taken to a public
hospital in the city for free treatment, Aling Rosa had
to give her fifty pesos, her whole savings in many
years. And now she was feeding her large brood of six
children while she and her husband were away.
Other little acts of kindness she had done known only
to their recipients – a gift of food to one, a loan of a
couple of pesos to another, an extension of credit to
many during typhoon seasons when fishermen could
not go out to sea. Doubtless, the barrio folk had not
been ungrateful and they had called the attention of
the selecting committee to her.

Describe Aling Rosa’s childhood.

Give examples of her acts of kindness. Would you have done some of the things she did?
Which are they? Why?
The town plaza was full of people. Aling Rosa felt,
indeed, embarrassed as they looked at her seated with
the mayor on a stage. Beside of the platform was a
covered statue. Despite her feeling of shyness Aling
Rosa enjoyed watching songs and folk dances of the
children on the stage. After that she listened to the
speech of the mayor.
“I wish to take this occasion to thank you all for the
cooperation you have extended to me in my
administration and now this town is a better place to
live in”
“And now to present to you the first citizen to have
been chosen as the model of good citizenship. That
great woman is before us. Yes, she is poor and
humble but nevertheless she is a great citizen for she
has been kind, unselfish and helpful to her neighbors.
It is an honor for this town to have a citizen like her.
She is Rosa Macario, the lady before us.”
“We have now come to the most important part of our
program – the unveiling of the statue. Will Miss
Macario please come forward and pull this string.”
Aling Rosa walked to the edge of the platform where
the statue located and she slowly begun to pull the
string and the face of a woman was revealed to all.
Aling Rosa herself couldn’t believe what she saw. The
stone face looked like her. Yes, it was her face except
for one detail – the blind ugly patch on her eye was
not there. The face had two good eyes, the sculptor or
who ever made that had been so kind to her.
