Summerbridge Hong Kong 2019 Lesson Plan Template

Teacher: Chris Course: Date:

Pop Culture Studies June 24, 2019
Aim/Objective: Students will be able to . . .
Identify two major functions of logos in popular culture

Key Vocabulary:
- Brand
- Sign
Materials Needed and Physical Classroom Prep:
- Pen box
- Logo Puzzle prepared
- Markers
- PPT
- Construction paper/scrap paper
- A4 Paper
-
Procedure: Time:
Do Now/Hook:
- Puzzle: in groups of 3 or 4 ~5/8mins
- Each group is given a puzzle (an A4 picture cut into pieces) of
advertising sign or logo/brand sign that is only available outside of
HK
- Segue to asking students where they have seen/how often they
have seen these (hopefully none)
-
Direct Instruction/Modeling: ~15mins
- Logos as a form of advertisement bound to culture
- Discuss why they have never seen these logos:
- They are different in different places. Some logos and
advertisements don’t exist in HK because they aren’t fit to what
people in HK like or need
- Ask them to think about international logos in HK
- International: being everywhere! It is something that is not only in
one country (it is in more than one country)
- Some advertisements and logos are popular everywhere
- Why? What makes them popular?
- Why is KFC so popular everywhere? The food/chicken is good,
everybody around the world can enjoy it // Cheap?
- But also remember that brand design is intended to make you
interested
- Why do you want to go to kfc? If the students answer: because it
looks good and along the lines of “you see it a lot” continue with
the follow:
- The use of a face in the logo makes you want to go more because
it makes KFC seem more friendly and personal (explain what
personal means). (color stands out, shows food, shows face)
- If the students answer with anything else: ask, does the KFC logo
make you want to go more?
- If students answer no, I will ask them to think of other ways, and
then connect their reasons to the use of logo-ing

- If students answer this with yes, I will segue to the next part.
-
- The use simple colors and the emphasis on their food options in
the branding makes it easier for us (people that like KFC) to
notice.

- Ask them to think about logos/brands/popular culture icons ~10mins

from HK (with time allowing//could be taken out)

Student Practice/Application:
- Game: Create your own Logo Puzzle
- Like my hook game, except each person has the opportunity to
design their own logo on an A4 piece of paper, and then cut it up
to make their own logo puzzle. ~15mins
- In groups of 3-4 they try each other’s puzzles
-
- Part 2: Amongst each group, they may create a collective
logo/icon, cut it into pieces (puzzle-fy it) and then pass it to
another group as a challenge
- (To make this more challenge, I could limit how many
strokes/lines each person could draw during the group phase) ~5mins

Wrap up/Closure:
-
- Idea: Could have everybody keep a log/journal, and after every
class they could pick one of their favorite logos/characters/things ~5mins
talked about in the class and put it in their journal

Clean Up
- Make sure any cut up scrap paper is properly recycled, and
cleaned up
