Instruction: In your own words, state what is themeaning of self for each of the following philosophers. After
doing so, explain how the following philosophers view oneself and relate it to your own perception of self. 2

PHILOSOPHERS EXPLANATION

1. Socrates As for socrates quote”The examined life is not worth living” To me, that means to
understand what you are living for is more important than actually living

2. Plato Unchanging self. The changing body however or what to plato a life well lived was
achieved by the pursuit of higher knowledge and mans social obligation to the common
good.

3. Augustine Augustine sense of self in relation to god both his recognition of god is love and his
response to it achieved through self presentation then self realization. Augustine
believed one could not achieve inner peace without finding god is love.

4. Descartes Descartes , every human being are in a search for life meaning and purpose there that
eternal longing for a complete satisfaction for the void life can harshly bring on us.
Therefore since we are here on earth then we search for life meaning.

5. Hume Hume suggests that the self is just a bundle of perceptions like links in a chain. Hume
argues that our concept of the self is a result of our natural habit of attributing unified
existence to any collection of associated parts of this belief in natural but there is no
logical support for it.

6. Kant According to him we humans have both an innner and outer self which unify to give us
conciousness the inner self comprised of our psychological state and our national
intelect. The outer self includes our sense and physical world.

7. Ryle Arguing that the mind does not exist and therefore cant be the seat of self ryle believed
that self comes from behaviors caused by the physical workings of the body

8. Merleau-Ponty Maurice Merleau-ponty believe the physical body to be an important part of what makes
up the the subjective self this concept stands in contradiction to nationalism and
empiricism rationalism asserts that reason and mental perception matter that physical
senses and experience are the basic of knowledge and self.

9. Churchland Rather the dualism, churhland holds to materialism the beliefs that nothing but matter
exists. When discussing the mind this means that the physical brain and not the mind
exist adding to this the physical brain is where we get our sense of self.
