Again, Austin would say yes.
Welcome to the 2020 summer
season of athlete Payton Braut,
daughter of Scobey’s John and Jodi
Braut, who began her sophomore
year at Scobey High School Thursday,
August 20. She finished her first
year of being a member of Club de
Skinautique (ski-nog-teek), which
is French for “Club of Waterskiing,”
on Sunday, August 9. The club is
based out of Lake Metigoshe, North
Dakota, which is on the international
border with the Canadian province of
Manitoba and located a dozen miles
north of the city of Bottineau.
Although she did play volleyball
in her junior high days, she is now
a two-sport athlete at Scobey High
School in basketball and track/field,
competing in the pole vault, long jump,
triple jump and 100- and 200-meter
dashes.
Asked recently if the water skiing
gig has made her a better athlete, Braut

balance and flexibility.”
In other words, Austin is correct.
Water skiing has been around
for nearly a century since Ralph
Samuelson first gave it a go in 1922.
Not long after the first organized
water skiing show was conducted in
1928 in New Jersey. That same year
Dick Pope Sr. organized a ski show in
Florida and 15 years later brought ski
showing to Cypress Gardens in central
Florida. The sport quickly caught on
and 10 years later on the west coast
of the U.S. Don Ibsen rounded up
some water skiers to have a show in
Seattle, it called “Poetry In Motion.”
Ibsen then took the show to other
west coast cities. The sport boomed in
the 1950s and 1960s in the Midwest,
with Wisconsin taking the lead in
developing the show clubs and today
has 26 teams around The Badger State.
Florida is currently next with nine
show teams and Minnesota with eight.
North Dakota’s Club de
Skinautique, located in the beautiful
Turtle Mountains, performed its
first show in July 1958. The Lake
Metigoshe Improvement Association
(LMIA) requested a show at its annual
meeting. When showtime arrived
there were several hundred people
on the nearby hillside observing the
ski demonstrations (the LMIA later
purchased the property, known these
days as Skinautique Hill, which is
where the club conducts its practices
and houses its equipment).
It became an official water ski club
in 1959 and a non-profit corporation
in 1961.
Fifty-six years later, in the
summer of 2017, Braut witnessed
her first Club de Skinautique show
while her family vacationed at Lake
Metigoshe. In 2018 she was there for a
few more shows and in 2019 saw all of
them.
“After seeing it for the first time it
was not something I wanted to try,” she
admitted. “Last year I was watching a
practice and one of (the performers)
asked me if I wanted to try it.”
She took a chance and, in her
own word, became “hooked.”
At that point she began making
telephone calls talking to some
people involved in the show and
doing the math of what it would cost
to be driving from Scobey to Lake
Metigoshe. It is a 526-mile round trip
via the North Dakota communities of
Crosby, Bowbells and Mohall along
Highway 5, which originates in Scobey
when heading east.
Suddenly, in a twist of fate, Braut
wouldn’t have to be making all those
long trips every weekend during water
skiing show season. Her mother’s
sister, Jessica Faleide, moved from
Scobey to Lake Metigoshe this past
spring and Braut had a place to stay
and a major lack of travel time all
taken care of.
Asked if that made it possible for
this year, Braut responded: “It really
did.”
 Her practice schedule was on
the water from 7-10 p.m. Fridays
and 9 a.m. “to whenever we get done,
upwards to three hours” on Saturdays
and Sundays.
She was involved in seven acts:
• Ballet (features a line of skiers
moving their arms and legs in
tandem with each other; it involves
a toe hold and a leg hold while on
the water to free up the arms);
• Big Pyramid (an act of an assembly
of skiers and climbers stacked on top
of one another to form a pyramid,
with each level called a tier);
• Conventionals (an act composed
of a line of basers on the bottom
with partners on their shoulders
performing various poses);
• Trick Skis (performed using very
short finless skis; skiers try to
perform tricks such as sliding
sideways, turning, wake turns and
jumps while being pulled);
• Trios (two young men lift, support,
and press Braut above their heads
performing stunts/poses; the men
wear a strap harness, the same as
doubles).
The other two acts Braut
performed were Double Triple and
Lean Out.
The remaining acts the show team
executes when Braut is not involved
include:
• Barefoot (the performer skis on his/
her bare feet without skis; there are
different tricks that can be done
including backwards and turns; it is

performed at high speeds).
• Jumping (skiers ride over a ramp in
the water and perform various tricks;
Heli is a complete 360 rotation;
Gainer is a forward moving backflip;
front flip; various combos of tricks
such as one or more skiers cutting
under the jumper, which is exciting).
• Strap Doubles (a male lifts and
supports a partner who performs
acrobatic stunts and poses above his
head; the male wears a strap harness,
which connects him to the boat
allowing his hands to be free; the
boat has a quick release called a “pin”
to free the skiers in case of a fall).
• Swivel (a skier performs on a slalom
ski with a binding that can turn and
swivel a full 360 degrees; graceful
spins, holds and other poses are
performed; it is a difficult act!).
Certain water ski acts may
include as many as 20 skiers being
pulled behind one boat. Because of the
extra power required to pull that many
skiers, Club de Skinautique owns
two 20-foot Hydrodyne tournament
ski boats. One is powered by twin
200-horsepower Evinrude engines.
The Club’s Hydrodyne ski boats are
also equipped with special safety
releases for the skiers’ ropes. Although
additional ski boats are used, the Club
de Skinautique has consistently used
at least one Hydrodyne ski boat as
their main “club boat” since 1972.
The icon of Club de Skinautique
is its ski jump, which has thrilled
crowds with exciting acts only possible
because of the structure. It is made of
5,600 pounds of industrial aluminum,
is 18 feet wide and rises five and
one-half feet out of the water. It was
originally part of a three-piece set
and came from Sea World in Florida,
meaning it was towed 2,100 miles
to Lake Metigoshe in the late 1990s.
Braut has designs of jumping over it at
some point.
The 2020 shows, with the season
finale occurring Sunday, August 9,
were abbreviated versions of their
normal self due to cross-border health
concerns needing no explanation. Club
de Skinautique has an international
flavor as nearly half of the performers
are from the Canadian provinces of
Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and
Ontario, with the rest from North
Dakota and the sole Montanan. While
the Canadian performers were not
allowed to cross the international
border by land as performers, they
were allowed to be in boats on the U.S.
side to watch their teammates perform
during this abnormal summer season.
They just couldn’t get out of the boat,
except on the Manitoba end of Lake
Metigoshe, which is located in Turtle
Mountain Provincial Park, meaning
they couldn’t compete.
When asked if she’ll give it another
go next summer, Braut responded: “I’ll
probably be doing it until I graduate
from high school.”

NRA: Steve Bullock And his flip flopping

Over the past few weeks, I had at
least two mailers in my mailbox from
liberal Gov. Steve Bullock’s campaign
where he pretends to support our 2nd
Amendment rights. Anyone who has
remotely followed the governors public
remarks over the last couple years would
let out an audible laugh immediately
upon receiving one of these mailers.
On guns: Bullock previously
campaigned in support of 2nd
Amendment rights, and after launching
his failed presidential campaign, he
now wants to ban semi-automatic rifles.
He also says “no one needs a 30-round
magazine.”
Despite this clear pandering to the
radical Democrat electorate during the
presidential primary, Bullock is now
trying to convince Montanans that it
never happened with his campaign ads.
