AWITING-BAYANG WARAY
PAGPAPALIWANAG:

KALAGIW ELOPEMENT
PAGPAPALIWANAG:
“Sally is coming home today!” said mother. “We should go to the bus terminal to
welcome her.” Father and Ben went along. Sally will surely have heavy baggage.
Aunt
Rosa stayed back home to prepare Sally’s favourite buko shake and bibingka.
“How exciting, mother! After two long months of work, she is coming home,” said
Ben. “I wonder what she bought for me.”
At the terminal, Father asked, “Buses have come and gone. Where is Sally?”
“The sun is now starting to set. Let’s wait for the next bus. Sally might already be
in it, “mother said with a worried voice.
Holding back tears from his eyes, Ben said, “Mother, I’m sure she’s on the next
bus. Don’t worry.”
“Here is the last bus from the city!” said father. Let’s hope Sally is in it.”
As the door of the bus opened, Sally ran to her family with smile on her lips and
shouting “Mother, father , at last, I’m here!”
Father and Ben helped Sally with her bags. Sally carried the extra bag. “Ben, I
bought you three new t-shirts and a back pack,” said Sally.
“Thank you,” said Ben. “But what is more important is we’re together again.”
PAGPAPALIWANAG:
ninyong umuwi.

DAYAMDAM
DAYAMDAM TREE
“So tell me about your tree,” said the bee to the dayamdam.
“Well, it’s the best tree in the world of course!” The dayamdam said proudly. It
had known that no other tree in the forest could match the beauty of its tree. It had
beautiful flowers that bloomed in the summer and when it bone fruit! Oh was the
sweet smell the most ravishing thing any being had ever smelled.
The bee asked “What of the humans? Do they share your thoughts on the tree?”
“You know how humans are,” the dayamdam replied. “Always thinking of
themselves. They don’t even ask for permission when gathering fruit from my tree.”
“How rude” the tree exclaimed.
“These humans don’t havy any manners” the dayamdam said haughtily.
Just then, the entire tree shook. The bee flew away to safety, but the dayamdam
stayed in the branches of its tree.
“You must run away!” The bee shouted.
“What is happening?!” The dayamdam cried out.
“The humans! The humans are cutting your tree.” The bee tried to help the
dayamdam but it was too small to carry the creature. The bee still tried to help its
friend by stinging the humans as they tried to cut the tree down, but to no avail.
“Run my friend! Run far away!” The bee exclaimed again,
But the bee knew that its friend would never leave the tree. For the dayamdam, the
tree was more than just a simple home. The tree was its entire life the branches its
veins and the flowers its heart. It would make clothes from the tree’s leaves and
spend the entirely ot its lifetime in between the bark and the fruit.
The bee stared as the tree was felled by human hands and if it could cry it would
shed a tear for its fallen friend. The humans claimed more than one victim that day,
and the whole forest would acknowledge that.
That night the trees echoed with the songs of the dayamdam, forever remembering
the most beautiful tree in the forest.
PAGPAPALIWANAG:

TIKBALANG
TIKBALANG (WEREHORSE)
Arturo had heard the stories before. How the creatures could be tamed to become
your loyal servants.
All he had to do was snatch the three golden hairs at the top of its head and then
stay on its back until it was done jumping into sky and going over the mountains said
than done.
He was desperate, he needed money and he knew that the tikbalang could help
him. He also knew that they would not forget him if the failed. They brought
sickness, but what did he need to fear? He was already sick, time was slipping away
from him and he needed something to hold on to. He didn’t want to leave his family
behind with debt and regret.
Arturo stood in front of the Balete tree and called the creature out. It had been
hours staring in the dark. his throat almost raw from shouting, but then he saw a
figure.
“Foolish human, why have you come here,” the figure said. “I am here to tame
you,” was Arturo’s reply.
A wild laughter erupted fron the creature, like nothing Arturo had ever heard
before.
“Many humans have tried and failed. What makes you think you will be the one to
tame me?”
“It doesn’t matter what I think, only what I will do.” “Very well then.”
Arturo launched himself at the tikbalang, its chaotic movement challenging his
grip. Arturo arms seemed to be falling him, but he held on. He thought about his
family and how they always relied on him. He would not let them down.
He picked the first golden hair. The tikbalang screamed in pain. But Arturo didn’t
mind it. He picked the second and saw that they weren’t in field with the Balete tree
anymore. He didn’t
recognize the mountain that the creature had taken them to, and he shook off the
curiosity.
There was still one more left. The tikbalang’s mane didn’t give him a lot of traction,
and he held tight against the creature’s neck.
The rising sun was visible in the distance and Arturo was surprised he lasted
hours on the tikbalang’s back. The creature was getting tired, its movements slower
and less erratic. As the sun rose in the distance the tikbalang fell exhausted in front of
its Balete. Tree. It looked at Arturo, now holding its three golden hairs.
“You have won.”
PAGPAPALIWANAG:
SHORT STORY FROM BICOL TABACO
BORINGKANTADA
BORINGKANTADA
Every night he hears the songs from the apartment beside him. They’re not all the same,
some nights it’s a quiet melody, almost like a love song. Other nights it’s a loud aria. But it’s
always the same voice. Her voice.
He always wished he was brave enough to knock that door and see for hilself. Dax tried to
imagine what she looked like, though he could ever get from his neighbors weren’t helpful.
Lola Anding who lived in the building the longest said the woman had long hair, though
she only ever saw it from the back. “She never liked to small talk with the rest of us, though I
don’t blame her.” Lola Anding smiled. “I remember when she moved in, all the young men
would go to her door and bother her all day ang night. Most of them left the building after
she wouldn’t answer them.”
He asked Jaime, who lived a floor above if there was anything he could tell him about the
woman. “Don’t bother. I tried too. “Was all he told Dax.
Nadine had more to say. She lived in the unit across Dax and liked the gossip. “She’s rich
or feeling rich. The few times I saw her she would have really expensive jewelry around her
neck, gold and diamonds. It’s probably fake, Tito Deng on the 3 rd floor said she told him that
she worked as a guard! I don’t know who she’s trying to fool. She probably works as an
escort.” The last person Dax talked to was Alfonso. He only spent his time in the building,
especially after his brother went missing. “She’s beautiful. Alfonso’s voice wa cold “That’s
what Kuya told me. He always tried to bring her flowers, but she never opened the door
formhim. I think he was in love with her, but she never even noticed him .”
Dax tried to draw her. He closed his eyes and tried to imagine her beauty. Her hair flowed
like a waterfall gently falling over her shoulders. Her hands moved throught it, like shooring
satars across the night sky. He thought of her walk, when the wind would move to guide her
nose were perfect, almost as if they were made to make his heart pause. Dax finished his
sketch and dropped his pencil. He didn’t know why he drew her eyes which such cruelty,
she stared at him with a look that reminded of envy.
That night he stood across the door to apartment and told himself it was time to try. Dax
knocked on the door and was prepared to wait in silence.
That is, until the door opened.
PAGPAPALIWANAG
