A "critical lift" is defined as any non-routine crane lift requiring detailed planning and additional or unusual safety precautions. Critical lifts
include: lifts made where the load weight is greater than 75% of the rated capacity of the crane; lifts which require load to be lifted, swung or
placed out of the operator's view; lifts made with more than one crane; lifts involving non-routine/technically difficult rigging arrangement;
hoisting personnel with a crane or derrick; or any lift which the crane operator believes should be critical.

Figure 2: DESI Spectrograph Inner Crate Dimensions and Center of Gravity Location
Figure 2 shows the dimensions of the DESI Spectrograph Inner Crate. At the Mayall, the Inner Crate is picked up on the
long side only, this is the side that is 2.309 meters as shown in Figure 2. This places the center of gravity at 875
millimeters from the camera side of the spectrograph. Picks are only done with the forklift documented here.

For loads whose center of gravity extends beyond 24” from the forklift backstop, the maximum capacity must be
downrated according to the chart below,
H40T:
Based on the load charts, at 36” the H40T is rated to 5,400 lbs. The total load is 2,276 lb, which is 42% of the rated load
for the H40T.
