ANSWER TO QUESTIONS
1. What effect does the slip-ring starting resistance have on the starting torque and the
starting current?
Due to the slip ring external resistance, the starting current of the motor is
reduced which helps in winding protection of the motor as the starting current drawn by
the motor is usually 5-7 times the full load current which can be dangerous. So when the
starting current is reduced the starting torque of the motor also gets reduced due to it.
Relationship is, if the starting current is reduced to 50% then the starting torque gets
reduced to 25% . So this method of motor starting is only effective for small motors.
2. To what value of resistance should the slip-ring starter be adjusted when starting a
wound-rotor induction motor?
When the rotor resistance is equal to rotor reactance then maximum torque will
occur at the starting. So rotor resistance adjusted till it become equal to reactance.
3. Under what conditions it is advantageous to use the wound-rotor type of induction
motor?
Wound rotor Motor also known as slip ring induction motor which have
external slip rings to connect the external resistance at rotor side. Slip ring induction
motor has high starting torque and low starting current. Low starting current is due to at
the time of starting we intentionally connect the external resistance at rotor side to bring
down the starting current. These are the main advantages for the wound rotor induction
motor.
