You have probably heard that, when you start grad school, you will have to
say goodbye to your friends, family, and free time. Grad school will be so
difficult, time-consuming, and life-draining that you won’t be able to catch
your breath. This is true for many, many grad students. But it doesn’t have
to be true for you. Your experience in grad school all depends on your
expectations for it. And you can start by setting goals for yourself.
Now choose 2 of those goals that you think are the most important.
Now that you know your two big goals, I like to call them "non-negotiables", you
will figure out how to achieve those goals. What are the steps that you need to
take to make your goals happen? For example, if you want a 4.0, you'll need to
schedule hw time and study time. Maybe you'll also want to get a study group
together. If you plan to apply for jobs, you need to write all of the application
materials, get letters of recommendation, search for jobs, and figure out deadlines.
Write down Goal #1 and the actionable steps you need to take throughout
the semester to achieve it.
Write down Goal #2 and the actionable steps you need to take
throughout the semester to achieve it.
Thinking about the actionable steps that you have set for yourself to achieve your
two big goals, how much time will they take? How much time each week will you
need to devote to your goals?
Write down Goal #2 and the time it will take to complete your actionable
steps each week or each month.
Now that we have our top 2 goals figured out. We need to take a step back and
think about our other responsibilities. Are you a GTA or an RA? Do you need to
grade or teach classes? And what about those other goals you mentioned on Day
1? This is how grad students get overwhelmed! There is so much to do and to get
done that it is easy to let it stress you out. But that's why you are taking this
challenge. So you can make a plan and be less stressed and less overwhelmed.
This is my favorite piece of advice! Figure out what you love to do and do it! So
simple. Why don’t grad students do this? I’m an only child so I entertained myself
by getting lost in a good movie or tv series. So everyday, I would make time for at
least 2 hours of tv every night...while I was in grad school. Having this time for
myself really kept me sane and prevented burnout.
Also, if you love hanging out with friends, schedule girls’ night at least twice a
month! You need this time to just be you. And since you’ve created a weekly
schedule, you don’t have to feel guilty or worried that you should be doing work.
