The 3-W’s of Beta Academy middle school and intermediate school are

What, Way, When.

Doing What is required,
the Way it is required, and
turn it in When it is required.
Scholars who consistently apply all three W’s to their schoolwork create
personal academic success in every content area including math.

Attached is a copy of the 1st Semester intermediate level Math Speed Drill.

This speed drill represents specific math facts; approximately 2/3 of which
were learned prior to 6th grade. All these facts represent information that
you need to be able to recite and use with automaticity (automaticity:
fluent memory; like you know you’re ABC’s).

Learning these facts to automaticity increases math proficiency because it

improves your mental math skills and computational ability on all math
problems. Having these facts memorized frees up your mind and leaves
more time to work on harder math processes and computations that
require critical thinking and analytical reasoning.
Math aims first to be accurate, then efficient. Proficiency improves your
math efficiency. Math efficiency prevents the wasted time used to
calculate facts because you have them memorized.
Beta’s math teachers teach relationship to and of these facts, so that the
Speed Drill is not a drill and kill rote requirement but a learning device.

Remember: Practice does not make perfect; it makes proficient, efficient,

and permanent.
