ACTIVITY 1: RATE OF DIFFUSION
APPARATUS:
Beaker (50 ml), measuring cylinder (25ml), dropping pipete, stopwatch,
spatula*, weighing scale*.
MATERIAL:
Distilled water, sodium chloride (course), sodium chloride (fine), filter paper.

PROCEDURE:
1. Measure 20ml distilled water using measuring cylinder and pour into different beakers
labelled A and B.
2. Mark 2 filter papers with A and B.
3. Measure 3g salt sodium chloride (course) using weighing scale. Place the salt on filter
paper A. Measure 3g salt sodium chloride (fine) and place on filter paper B.
4. Pour salt in filter paper A into beaker A and salt in filter paper B into beaker B. Start the
stopwatch immediately.
5. You may gently swirl the beakers slowly with same rate to spread over the salt in the
beaker.
6. Observe the condition of salt and record the time taken when salt completely dissolve.

OBSERVATION:

Beaker Time taken for salt to dissolve (minute)

DISCUSSION:
1. Choose either course sodium chloride or fine sodium chloride will diffuse faster in
water.

ACTIVITY 2: MEASURE DIAMETER USING VERNIER CALIPERS
APPARATUS:
Vernier calipers, slotted weight.

PROCEDURE:
1. By using the venier calipers, measure the diameter of one slotted weight.
2. Repeat step 1 to measure diameter other slotted weight.

VARIABLES:
Manipulated variable: _______________________________________

Responding variable: _______________________________________

Fixed variable: ________________________________________
