ROTAMETER FUNCTION TESTING & CLEANING

1 PURPOSE:
 To check out the accuracy & function of rota meter (flow indicator)
2 SCOPE:
 Electrical & Instrument (YES)
 Process / Moulding (YES)
 Safety (YES, if HOT permit)
3 PRE-REQUISITE
 Approved hot / cold work permit
 Proper tools
 Complete isolation before starting the job
 Spare gaskets
 Safety clearance & safety man with appropriate fire extinguisher & sand buckets (if HOT permit)
 Fire suit, face shield, heat proof gloves, safety / long shoes (if HOT permit)
4 PROCEDURE:
 Generate a work permit either cold or hot according to the line temperature where the rota meter is
installed ( if the rota meter is installed on hot line having temperature above than 50 ^C then a hot
permit will be made)
 If there is a HOT permit then executing department will obtain a clearance by safety department &
prior to give clearance, safety department shall check the site physically & a safety man shall be
deputed all the time when job is carried out.
 Prior to start the activity (if hot permit), executing department shall follow the below mentioned
procedures with safety department coordination

 System should be isolated and properly drained from process side

 For hot line, wait, till that instrument temperature cool down to room temperature
 Without any flow, the indicator should indicate zero, if it's needle is stuck then rota-meter cleaning
is required & if needle have some zero error then its needle adjustment is also required
 if line temp is >50 ^C then use fire suit, face shield, heat proof gloves & safety / long shoes during
dismantling of rota-meter from the line after isolation & drain
 First of all check that the needle moves along with float by pushing the float physically in the
direction of flow, if not that's mean flow tube cleaning is required
 Dismantle the display of rota-meter by removing it's mounting bolt and keep it safely aside
 Dismantle the flow-meter from line by removing it's flange bolts & check its gasket condition also
 Remove the cir-clip and then remove the float after marking direction of float
 Gently clean the float and float tube with water for removing of sticking materials
 Re-installed the float in float tube as marked & flange and then install rota-meter display
 As display is installed, the pointer needle must move to "Zero” or “Residual Point (RP)", if not then
change the direction of float by removing it again
 If needle has some zero error then it's needle adjustment is also required, adjust needle to zero
position by screwing the needle bolt
 Again re-checked the working of flow meter by pushing the float physically in the direction of flow
so that the needle should move along with float and move down at zero position when you leave the
float freely
 After checking, install the instrument again by replacing new gaskets (if old gasket condition is not
satisfactory) on it's place and ask process person to take it in-line and check for any leakage also
 After completion, verify flow indication to process personnel
 If there is no change in the result then rota-meter is faulty & it's replacement is required
 Close your work permit from concerned authorized personnel
 In case of HOT permit, then the deputed safety man will also close the job work permit by signing
on it & confirm that now the activity area is clear & all safety hazards have been removed
 Clean the area & remove all the tools
 Make an entry of the said job in the technician log book
