Modification of air suspension

(4 series)
Background
In order to further develop Scania’s air suspen-
sion system in respect to lifting heights, com-
fort of ride, ease of service and reliability,
certain modifications and additions have been
made in production from 9604. There are
changes in both parts and features.

Changes
The changes can be divided into ”Modified air
suspension, rear”, which affect mechanical
component changes and the mounting of all air
sprung rear axles, and ”ELC generation 2”,
which involves both system and component Fig. 1
changes to vehicles equipped with the ELC air
suspension system.

Modified air suspension, rear

• The shock absorbers for the driven and tag
axles moved to the outside of the frame
(see Fig. 1).
• The air bellows are directly on the air spring
leaf.
• The same bellows are used for all driven and
tag axles, irrespective of axle weight distri-
bution (distribution is controlled by the con-
trol unit).
• The clamp bolts have been refined and are
turned to facilitate tightening (see Fig. 1).
The procedure for tightening the bellows is
unchanged, see TI 12-94 11 21.
• Standardisation to one type of tag axle lift.
• Vulcanised bushing in the upper shock ab-
sorber bracket.
• Increased working range (lifting heights).
• Increased spring deflection on vehicles with
chassis height L.
