STANDARD PENETRATION TEST (SPT)

This method describes the standard penetration test using the split-barrel sampler
to obtain the resistance of soil to penetration (N-value), using a 63.5 kg hammer
falling 0.76 m.

To perform standard penetration to obtain the penetration resistance (N-value)

along the depth of rock with the N-Value more than 300 to determined the rock
socket level

KUCHING DIVISION – PACKAGE B

The equipment and accessories must be capable of safely, speedily and

efficiently to the carry out the test.

 Standard split barrel sampler

 A drill rod for extending the test to required depths
 Rope (long & strong enough to lift 63.5 kg load repeatedly)

3.0 MANPOWER

An experienced bored pile supervisor will be stationed on site to monitor the

hacking and cutting process.

NO MANPOWER PAX PURPOSE

6 General worker 2 Supporting works

4.0 PROCEDURE
4.1 TEST HOLE
Drill the hole to the desired sampling depth and clean out all disturbed
material. If a wet drill is used, flush out all cuttings.

4.2 ASSEMBING EQUIPMENT

Attach the split-barrel sampler to the A-rod and lower into the hole until it is
sitting on the undisturbed material.

Attach the drive weight assembly.

Lift the 63.5 kg hammer approximately 0.76 m and allow it to fall on the anvil
delivering one seating blow.

Mark the drill rod in 3 successive 0.15 m increments to observe penetration.

Mark the drive weight assembly to indicate a 0.76 m hammer lift.

4.3 PENETRATION TESTING

Raise and drop the hammer 0.76 m successively by means of the rope and
cathead, using no more than 2 1/4 wraps around the cathead. The hammer
should drop freely.

Continue the driving until either 0.45 m has been penetrated or 100 blows has
been applied.

Seating Drive- Using standard blows, the seating drive shall be a

penetration of 150mm or 25 blows whichever is first
reached.
Test Drive - The number of blows required for a further penetration of
300mm and this is termed the penetration resistance (N), if
the 300mm cannot achieved in 50 blows, the test drive shall
be terminated.

If the blow count exceeds 50 in total, terminate the test and record the number
of blows for the last 0.30 m of penetration as the N-value.
