EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The goal of this project is giving an immediate solution of the severe quandary of irrigation
water supply system in sehala seyemit woreda, bilaza kebele. Safe and sufficient water for
irrigation users is essential for development and good for crop production system. There is a
serious problem of irrigation water supply both in quantity and quality in sehala seyemit woreda,
bilaza kebele .So this proposed scheme will be minimize the shortage of irrigation water supply
in bilaza kebele. In this proposed scheme all part of the recommended civil works are described
in detail. The total length of canal extension is about 1000m and 47.7 hectares. There are 135
PSNP and 41 None PSNP users in this project. The estimated Costs for various items of works
have been also calculated with grand total investment cost of the project to implement the system
is about Birr; 1,259,181.48 ETB.

1. Introduction

5
Irrigation is the artificial supply of water for agriculture, the systematical distribution of this
water over the fields and the drainage of this water from the fields to natural drains after as much
benefit as possible has been derived from it.

The growing rate of intensity in agriculture and acute deficit problems arising from rain fail
shortage, uneven spatial distribution, the computation for water among different sectors of
development (water supply, agriculture, industries, etc) case increase in water usage. This is
general truth call for higher irrigation efficiencies in Irrigated agriculture development practices

Hence to achieve this goal irrigation and drainage works need vital planning. The planning
process for selecting a farm irrigation system requires an inventory of the resources available to
the farmer. The evaluation of these resources is necessary to identify the production potentials,
and the physical and operational constraints which affect the selection of viable alternative farm
irrigation systems. The analysis and comparison of these alternatives provides a basis for
selecting the farm irrigation system.

Regardless of the size of the farm to be irrigated, the physical resources of water supply, soils,
topography and climate will affect the farm cropping potential. These resources along with the
crops to be grown, must be evaluated in conjunction with other resources such as available
labour and energy, marketing potentials, economic conditions, the farmers’ preferences, and his
financial situation as all will influence the selection of the farm irrigation system. Therefore, the
initial step in the planning process is to identify the parameters which are needed to determine
the viable irrigation methods for a given farm. After assessing the applicable irrigation methods
for a farm, alternative farm irrigations systems can be designed and analyzed, and the appropriate
system selected.

1.1 Objective
To minimize seepage, loses and stagnation of water

To allocate water at equity, equal and fair distribution

To increase the income of the community

2. DESCRIPTION OF STUDY AREA

2.1 General
Sehala seyemit woreda is found in waghimra Zone, Amhara National Regional State and it is
located 130km far from sekota town, with UTM 1,427,713.301m N, 446281.18 m E at an
average altitude of 1299m a.m.s.l.

2.2 Topography
The project area is characterized by variable topography like mountain and irregular shape .

2.3 Geology
The project area is characterized by variable geological information. Most characterized by hard
rock. The soil conditions are more dominated by sandy soil.

2.4 Climate Agro-climatically

Sehala seyemit micro-watershed is grouped under kola. It is characterized by un equal
distribution or scarcity of rainfall. It receives rainfall only from July to August .According to un
equal rainfall distribution, sehala seyemit area is commonly known as having strongly short
growing period from July to August.

2.5 Socio economic characteristic

2.5.1 Economic Activities in sehala seyemit woreda

The livelihood of the majority of the population in sehala seyemit woreda is based on
agricultural production government employees and small businesses. The main crops growing in
the Woreda are; maize, sorghum and Teff e.t.c.
