Choosing a House
Last year my sister was married. The hardest part of the wedding preparation was finding a
house. How could we choose a propriate apartment? We decided to consult an expert. One
of father’s friend is real estate agent. He told us the details of choosing a house.
First, we should have decided whether to buy or rent because in downtown there are not
many options to buy compared to the suburbs of city. Downtown part has mostly high-rise
apartments with expensive rent prices. You also must pay the apartment fee every month
for maintenance costs in addition to the rent. Most of the houses have three or four
bedrooms and a living room. But there is hardly any small apartment with only 2 rooms with
cheaper rent for singles or newly-weds. Konya is a conservative city and most of the
houseowners do not want students or singles as a tenant. In contrast suburbs offers more
options with some drawbacks. Rent prices cheaper and landlords/ladies are more tolerant to
students, singles and small families. You do not have to pay fee, but all the maintenance
costs are belonging to the renter. Furthermore, if you do not want to be a renter, there are
other options to buy one.
But houses are not just sorted by the rental options. There are so many other criteria to take
into consideration. One of them is earthquake resilience and insurance expenses. Downtown
apartments are older and most of them built before updated construction regulations. Thus,
yearly insurance costs are more expensive. You can always find a newly built suburb house
with more modern construction material. Downtown apartments are closer to anything you
probably need like school, job and supermarkets. You do not have to car to go anywhere.
But this situation comes with a noise problem. Due to high traffic, high level constant noise is
part of living in downtown. Suburbs are quieter and more peaceful with low traffic but its
father from city services and if we think about job opportunities in downtown, having a car is
mandatory.
Thus, my sister and her husband decided to rent a small house in suburbs for this early
period. But they are thinking to buy a bigger one in downtown in the future, especially after
one or two kids. We can not thank enough to my father’s friend for this difficult task. We
learned so much about how to choose a house.
