Community Helpers
Dear Zebra Families,

This week was about Community Helpers. The children got to be police officers, medical workers, construction
workers, mechanics, and builders. They also got to be teachers and librarians, restaurant and grocery store workers,
and firefighters. The class gained appreciation for all that others do for us, and we planted seeds about what we
might want to be when we grow up.

As the weather gets consistently cooler, please have the children in jackets or at least have a jacket in their bag. We
are outside on the playground and on walks every chance we get. If they come in a dress/skirt, please have them also
in some type of legwear if possible. It makes for a much more comfortable and fun time on the playground! Also, as
the season gets rainier, rainboots are definitely fun to wear to school. Please also bring in a pair of play shoes to
change into for the gym and playground.

Our Accomplishments:

The class celebrated Jacob’s Special Day with themed Halloween napkins and the always much anticipated
gingerbread cake. We read his favorite book, a Cars book featuring Lightning McQueen.

To help kickstart Community Helpers week, Officer Raines read a book about what you can be when you grow up. The
book taught us about all the ways we can help people. We can help others as teachers and doctors, police officers
and fire fighters, and constructions workers and bakers. Everyone got to be a doctor this week. The children
assembled their very own doctor kits that included an assortment of items that a doctor would need.

They also got to be construction workers, mechanics, and builders. The classroom was a construction work site
complete with cones and a fence, and they wore their construction vests and went to work. The mechanics used their
tools to fix a broken-down car in the car shop, and our builders used Legos to construct tall buildings.

We had teachers using the chalkboard to teach math and reading to their students, and we had librarians who
checked out books to their customers. We were chefs at a restaurant and cashiers at a grocery store. The class
especially had fun being fire fighters. They enjoyed wearing firefighter hats, using spray bottles to put out fires in the
sensory bin, and washing “firetrucks” out on the portico. There was a lot of dramatic play this week. They used props
and got to dress up and use their imagination to learn all the ways they can help others.
