JOB REPORT
WEEK THREE (17/08/2020-22/08/2020)
WORK EXPERIENCED
Day 1 (17/08/2020)
Job Number 1
Customer: Alhaji Borbor Bah
Address: Freetown Road
Job Type: Repair
Job Details: the engine block of the generator has a welded spot which has cracked leading to
oil leakage. There was also leakage from the point where the oil sensor is adapted to the block;
this was caused by an uneven grinding that was done on the surface where the washer of the
sensor is to rest hence causing the washer not to evenly rest on the block when you fix the oil
sensor resulting to the oil leakage. To solve the problem, we wrap thread on the sensor’s
thread to create a seal in order to prevent the leakage. We also applied Araldite on the cracked
welded spot to prevent leakage from that point. Another problem that was with the generator
was that it cannot be stopped from the control panel. We went with an electrician who
diagnosed the fault and rectified it by changing two relays and the stop solenoid. The engine
can now be started and stopped from the panel after the rectification.
Generator Make: Perkins
Generator size: 13KVA
Engine Serial Number: GU51798U539996W
Day 2 (18/08/2020)
Job Number 1
Customer: Inspector General of Police
Address: Regent Road, Wilberforce
Job Type: call out
Job Details: the customer complained of the generator not starting. We diagnosed the electrical
system of the generator but we find no fault so we used the battery we went with to crank the
engine and the generator started. From this our conclusion was that the battery was not
charged enough to start the generator. Before we left we asked the contact person to allow the
generator to run for an hour for the battery to charge.

What I Learnt
In addition to what we have been doing, we did two extra work this week which have in turn
help me gain experience in that regard.
These work are:
Adjusting the frequency (Hz) and speed of an engine. This may be different from one engine
to another and I am yet to experienced how it is done on other models aside the one we did
it on
Washing of a radiator with a pressure washer
Observations
Together with my team there are things we saw on site that I intended to include in my report
as part of my report writing mandate.
The belt of Alhaji Bobor Bah’s 13KVA Perkins generator with engine serial number
GU51798U539996W is showing signs of wear with cuts on it
The 400KVA Perkins generator with engine serial number FGD063015U5942P at the Bank of
Sierra Leone head office has an abnormal control panel. What I mean is that the cover that
has the description of the operation buttons is removed leaving the circuit board of the
panel naked.
When we started the 250KVA Perkins generator at Izzat’s place, we heard a strange noise
especially just after the engine started running. The noise sounds like a knocking sound and
the contact person said that this has been the way the generator has been behaving for
some time now
Recommendations
The belt of the 13KVA perkins generator at Alhaji Borbor Bah’s place has to be replaced
immediately
It will be good to send people from the workshop to properly diagnosed the cause of the
knocking sound of that 250 KVA Perkins generator at Izzat’s place solve the problem
Although the mechanic at the Bank of Sierra Leone seems to be convenient with the
condition of the control panel of that 400KVA Perkins generator, it will be safe and more
ideal to change the panel
As we do our service job, we are too careful not to spill oil or diesel on the floor but it can
be very difficult in some cases. As a recommendation, I ask that absorbents are to be given
to the service team which they can spread on the floor where they will be dealing with oil
and diesel so as to prevent these liquids from reaching the floor. It can also be used to
absorb oil or diesel that may spill on the floor.
