JOB REPORT
WEEK THREE (17/08/2020-22/08/2020)
WORK EXPERIENCED
Day 1 (17/08/2020)
Job Number 1
Customer: Alhaji Borbor Bah
Address: Freetown Road
Job Type: Repair
Job Details: the engine block of the generator has a welded spot which has cracked leading to
oil leakage. There was also leakage from the point where the oil sensor is adapted to the block;
this was caused by an uneven grinding that was done on the surface where the washer of the
sensor is to rest hence causing the washer not to evenly rest on the block when you fix the oil
sensor resulting to the oil leakage. To solve the problem, we wrap thread on the sensor’s
thread to create a seal in order to prevent the leakage. We also applied Araldite on the cracked
welded spot to prevent leakage from that point. Another problem that was with the generator
was that it cannot be stopped from the control panel. We went with an electrician who
diagnosed the fault and rectified it by changing two relays and the stop solenoid. The engine
can now be started and stopped from the panel after the rectification.
Generator Make: Perkins
Generator size: 13KVA
Engine Serial Number: GU51798U539996W

Day 2 (18/08/2020)
Job Number 1
Customer: Inspector General of Police
Address: Regent Road, Wilberforce
Job Type: call out
Job Details: the customer complained of the generator not starting. We diagnosed the electrical
system of the generator but we find no fault so we used the battery we went with to crank the
engine and the generator started. From this our conclusion was that the battery was not
charged enough to start the generator. Before we left we asked the contact person to allow the
generator to run for an hour for the battery to charge.
Generator Make: Kamar
Generator size: 5KVA

Job Number 2
Customer: Access Bank
Address: Congo Cross
Job Type: Service
Job Details: We changed the oil, the oil filter, and the fuel filter and cleaned the generating set.
Generator Make: Perkins
Generator size: 30KVA
Engine Serial Number: DJ834005010747D

Day Three (20/08/2020)

Job Number 1
Customer: Bank of Sierra Leone (reserve)
Address: Spur Road
Job type: Call out
Job Details: it was reported that the generator stops after it runs for few minutes. On site we
looked at the board and saw a diagnostic code that indicates low engine frequency and RPM.
The problem was solved by adjusting the governor through the adjustable screw on the injector
pump; both the frequency and RPM were raised to their standard specifications.
Generator Make: Perkins
Generator size: 30KVA

Job Number 2
Customer: UNICEF
Address: New England
Job type: service
Job Details: we changed the oil, the oil filter, the fuel filter and the air filter and cleaned the
generator
Generator Make: Ghaddar Perkins
Generator size:
Engine Serial Number: RJ51175U542402V

Day Four (21/08/2020)

Job Number 1
Customer: Mohamed Basma
Address: 7 Kallon Drive, Aberdeen
Job type: Call out
Job Details: the customer complained that his generator cannot start. When we arrived we
looked at the control board and found out that the voltage of the battery was below capacity to
start the generator. We used our own battery to start the generator and was able to start.

Note: we visited two other sites for service on that day but in each of these places we found out
that the generators were not yet due for service

Day Five (22/08/2020)

Job Number 1
Customer: Bank of Sierra Leone (Head Office)
Address: Gloucester Street
Job type: Service
Job Details: we changed the oil, the oil filter and fuel filter, washed the radiator with pressure
washer, clean the generating set and clean and greased the battery terminals and poles. The air
cleaner was not much dirty so the mechanic in charge of the generator asked us to leave with
him the new one we went with. He said that he himself will change it later whenever he thinks
the air cleaner has to be changed.
Generator make: Perkins
Generator size: 400 KVA
Engine Serial Number: FGD063015U5942P

Job Number 2
Customer: Izzat
Address: Brima Lane
Job Type: Service
Job Details: changing of oil, changing of filters including the oil, fuel and air filter, cleaning the
battery terminals, cleaning the generator, washing the radiator with a pressure washer and
toping the coolant with water.
Generator Make: Perkins
Generator size: 250 KVA
Engine Serial Number: LGDF1012N032158

Nature of the Job

In addition to what I explained in my previous reports, the service job also include cleaning the
battery terminals of corrosion, cutting off corroded end of the terminal cables, tightening of
engine mounting bolts, checking for moisture beneath the alternator guard, making sure the
radiator fan and belts are not in contact with the guard, topping up the coolant if it is below
normal, tensioning of belt/s if slacked, tightening of cable connection screws and washing of
the radiator when necessary.

What I Learnt
In addition to what we have been doing, we did two extra work this week which have in turn
help me gain experience in that regard.
These work are:
 Adjusting the frequency (Hz) and speed of an engine. This may be different from one engine
to another and I am yet to experienced how it is done on other models aside the one we did
it on
 Washing of a radiator with a pressure washer
Observations
Together with my team there are things we saw on site that I intended to include in my report
as part of my report writing mandate.
 The belt of Alhaji Bobor Bah’s 13KVA Perkins generator with engine serial number
GU51798U539996W is showing signs of wear with cuts on it
 The 400KVA Perkins generator with engine serial number FGD063015U5942P at the Bank of
Sierra Leone head office has an abnormal control panel. What I mean is that the cover that
has the description of the operation buttons is removed leaving the circuit board of the
panel naked.
 When we started the 250KVA Perkins generator at Izzat’s place, we heard a strange noise
especially just after the engine started running. The noise sounds like a knocking sound and
the contact person said that this has been the way the generator has been behaving for
some time now

Recommendations
 The belt of the 13KVA perkins generator at Alhaji Borbor Bah’s place has to be replaced
immediately
 It will be good to send people from the workshop to properly diagnosed the cause of the
knocking sound of that 250 KVA Perkins generator at Izzat’s place solve the problem
 Although the mechanic at the Bank of Sierra Leone seems to be convenient with the
condition of the control panel of that 400KVA Perkins generator, it will be safe and more
ideal to change the panel
 As we do our service job, we are too careful not to spill oil or diesel on the floor but it can
be very difficult in some cases. As a recommendation, I ask that absorbents are to be given
to the service team which they can spread on the floor where they will be dealing with oil
and diesel so as to prevent these liquids from reaching the floor. It can also be used to
absorb oil or diesel that may spill on the floor.
