Precautionary

Measures:
Before, During
and After an
Earthquake

Before an earthquake:

Take some time to prepare yourself, and your loved ones for a
possible earthquake. As one can hit at any given time, being
prepared with the necessary tools will likely ease your nerves in
the midst of the calamity.

1. Familiarize yourself with the location of fire

extinguishers, medical kits, exit routes, and your
building’s evacuation plan

2. Have necessary house repairs fixed to avoid further damage

3. Store harmful chemicals and flammable materials properly

4. Secure heavy furniture and hanging objects

5. Prepare your survival kit* (preferably one in your house,

car, and workplace)

6. Participate in office and community earthquake drills

7. Discuss a designated meet up location with family in case

you’re separated

8. Learn simple first aid techniques

During an earthquake:
1. Stay calm and stay put

2. Duck, cover and hold under somewhere stable (ex. desk or

table)

3. Stay away from glass windows, shelves, and heavy and hanging
objects

4. Exit the building only once shaking stops via stairs.

Elevators are not to be used.

5. Evacuate to an
open area away
from trees,
electric posts
and landslide
prone areas

6. If you’re in a
moving vehicle,
step out and
move towards a
safer area.

7. Avoid
overpasses,
slowly stop in
an open area,
and remain in your vehicle

After an earthquake:
1. Stay alert in the event of aftershocks

2. Check yourself and those in your surroundings are injuries

and provide first aid. Prioritize children, pregnant women,
PWDs, and senior citizens*

3. For coastal locations, evacuate to higher ground immediately

4. Double check for toxic spills and flammable chemicals

5. Stay out of buildings until advised

6. Check for water, electrical, gas, or LPG leaks and damages

7. Stay updated through a battery-operated radio

8. If signal is not down, message loved ones of your state and

where you are
Precautionary
Measures:
Before, During
and After an
Volcanic
Eruption
Before volcanic eruptions:
Everyone should be aware of the dangers that volcanic
eruptions pose to lives and be prepared to face whatever
circumstances the eruption may bring.
Prepare all necessary things to bring once evacuation is
needed. Those in danger zones are warned when to evacuate.
Once given the signal refrain from saying you will be all
right. Refusing to evacuate will pose more serious problems.
Store as much food, water, light sources and batteries that
are very useful in case of emergency.
Volcanic eruptions have ash falls so be prepared for masks or
anything to cover nose and mouth.
Prioritize the safety of kids before other things. If you have
relatives or friends who are far from the volcano, take your
children there until such time that your place is safe.

During volcanic eruptions:

Avoid all low-lying places because lava flows and mudflows
are more likely to pass them.
Seek cover in case of ash falls rock falls.
Use masks and cover your mouth and nose to avoid breathing in
ashes.
If you are inside a house; close all doors and windows to
avoid ashes from getting inside.
Always stay indoors.
Stay in the evacuation center until further instructions. Do
not attempt to leave the place unless told to do so.
Keep a watchful eye on the kids because they might be tempted
to go out and see what is going on outside.
After volcanic eruptions:

Go back to your house but leave the kids behind with someone
who can take care of them while you check your house.
Clean everything around your house and check all damages
incurred.
Use masks while cleaning ash and other debris.
Wait for further announcements related to the volcano
activities.
Make sure that your house is still safe for all of you.

characterized mainly by
ashfalls. It was only in 1902
when the volcano erupted with
lava.
