Lab Objectives
 To study the function of Amplitude Modulation & Demodulation (Under modulation,
Perfect modulation & Over modulation) using Matlab Simulink.
 To perform the AM DSB-SC signal Generation and Detection using Matlab Simulink.

Equipment Required
 Laptop/Computer with MATLAB installed.

Theory
In synchronous demodulation, the same carrier signal (which is used for generating Amplitude
modulated signal) is used to detect the message signal. Hence, this process of detection is called
as coherent or synchronous detection. Following is the block diagram of the coherent detector.

Lab Tasks:
Perform the following task and paste the codes and screenshot of your results

Task 1:

Draw amplitude modulated signal from lab 2 using the equation

Amplitude Modulation = [ A+m(t)] cos(ωct) and demodulate it using synchronous demodulator.

Task 2:

Plot DSB-SC signal and demodulate it using coherent demodulator and analyze its frequency
spectrum by using spectrum analyzer.

Why this demodulator is named as synchronous demodulator?
A synchronous demodulator is a device that recovers information from the modulated signal. This
demodulator is called synchronous demodulator as its frequency is exactly the same as the carrier
has.

What difference do you see in the modulated signals of conventional

AM and DSB-SC? In time and frequency?
Modulation is the process of converting data into radio waves by adding information to an
electronic or optical carrier signal. A carrier signal is one with a steady waveform --
constant height, or amplitude, and frequency. Information can be added to the carrier by
varying its amplitude
In frequency domain
We can see that in conventional AM, we get three peaks one at fc and others two at fc+fm and
fc-fm.
In DSB-SC, we got two peaks only. One at fc+fm and other at fc-fm.
In time domain
In time domain, there is no such difference between the two signals.

Is coherent demodulator used for over, under and perfect modulated

signals?
Coherent demodulation is also called synchronous demodulation and it is suitable for
all the demodulation of linear modulation signals. ... Coherent demodulation usually
uses a multiplier to multiply the input a reference signal that is coherent with the carrier
frequency and the carrier frequency.

Yes, coherent demodulator also known as synchronous demodulator used for over, under and
perfect modulated signals as these are the types of modulation.
