SUMMARY

Industrial training purposes are to train students about the real engineering world and
also as a preparation for students before entering employment. All Bachelor in
Engineering (Hons) Civil (Infrastructure) students must be take the industrial training
for at least 8 weeks. The duration for the industrial training is eight week only that
starting from 11th July 2016 to 2nd September 2016.

During the industrial training at One V Project Management & Consultancy Sdn.
Bhd., I have been assigned as the technical draughtsman. Since the company is a
consulting firm, most of the work was for the design management which consist of
work such as design by using software AutoCAD 2013 mostly and manual design by
doing spread sheet in Microsoft Excel 2010, design checking, sizing up design and
others that requires in design management. My main task during this training is to
design of the Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) Sewage Package Plant that was on
proposal stage that the company wants to invent.

In addition, there are several times I will also visit the project site for an inspection
before the project get the Official Certification (OC) by the authority and also doing
measuring site activity for an upgrading sewage treatment plant at Taman Songket
Indah.

In the industrial training, I also need to prepare an estimated concrete work for a
tender document for project MIDAS Sdn Bhd project and Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan
Air Negara (SPAN) projects too. I also need to prepare a material report for the
project since the sewage treatment plant use various machineries to operate the
system.

Last but not least during this Industrial Training helps me to understand being in civil
engineer life and I learnt many things in the meant time it helps me to be more clear
and more understanding in the civil engineering field.

CHAPTER 4 TECHNICAL REPORT

4.1 INTRODUCTION

This chapter will give a detail about the proposal design job of the Fiber Reinforced
Concrete (FRP) Sewage Package Plant. The details and journey related to the design
works of FRP during the employment days will further be explained.

4.2 TASK DETAIL

During the employment, the company director has assigned me to design the FRP
tank. It is known as FRP Sewage Package Plant Tank that has a complete system by
using the FRP material itself. This company wanted to make this FRP Sewage
Package Plant Tank as their other service for those who interested in this FRP full
package plant. Therefore, the FRP design is still in proposal stage and shall endorse by
the Professional Engineer and Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Air Negara (SPAN) before
they can proceed with any further action.

4.3 INTRODUCTION TO FRP SEWAGE PACKAGE PLANT TANK

FRP Package Plant is a fiber reinforced polymer made of a plastic matrix. Due to the
corrosion resistant nature of FRP, the tank can be made entirely from the composite,
or a second liner can be used. The inner liner also is made using different material
properties than the structural portion. Furthermore, the plastic material use may be
epoxy, a thermosetting plastic or thermoplastic.

27
Figure 4.1 FRP tank

4.4 SIZE OF THE FRP TANK

FRP has a fixed diameter of 3.6 meter. The length size of FRP tank may vary based on
the calculation that had been made. However, the designer shall need to aware about
the maximum length of the tank. The maximum length of each FRP tank can reach
about 7.2 meter including both endcaps since the manufacturer or the supplier can
transport the tank with 7.2 meter length. Therefore, the actual maximum length of
each tank is 5.8 meter. If the tank reached the number, thus, the tank shall need to
divide into two tanks.

Figure 4.2 Illusion of cross-section of FRP tank

28
4.5 ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF FRP

Commonly in Malaysia, the Sewage Treatment Plant is using a concrete material for
the structure. However, FRP tank also has its own advantages and disadvantages
compare to the concrete material. Therefore, before making any decision, the benefits
needed to be considered so that a better choice can be make.

4.7 FRP TANK DESIGN REQUIREMENT

Based on SPAN guideline, the package sewage treatment plant can only be developed
in limited range of 150 PE to 5000 PE only and it shall include prefabricated
biological treatment system. The major component of the system shall also consist of;

I) Inlet works
a) Primary screen.
b) Pump Station
c) Secondary screen.
d) Grit and grease chambers.

II) Biological treatment system

a) Balancing Tank.
31
b) Aeration/Anoxic Tank.
c) Clarifier.
d) Sludge Holding Tank.
e) Aeration System including blower house.
f) Sludge Dewatering System.

III) Outlet works

a) Disinfection (physical, chemical or radiation).

4.8 DESIGN OF FRP TANK

Before design the tank, it is compulsory to know the basic of wastewater treatment
works when using the FRP tank so that we can arrange the tank to save the site area as
well as saving any un-necessary cost in the future.

The manufacturer will give the provided area (cross sectional area) that their factory
produce and the designer shall need to calculate the volume that to be used based on
the given specification by them. When designing the tank, we need to find the
required volume for each tank and compare with the capacity of the provided tank.
The capacity volume should be higher than the required volume so that the tank can
cater the required volume.

32
4.8.1 FLOWRATE

Before a tank can be design, population equivalent (PE) in the area shall need to
consider base on the type of waste. PE is the estimated usage of waste facilities and
PE needs to convert into a volumetric rate to calculate it. Therefore, as a designer, we
need to take the maximum value of flowrate which can be calculated by the equation
below.

Q = PE x q Equation 4.1

Qpeak = 4.7 x P-0.11 x Q Equation 4.2

Where;

Q = Flowrate
Qpeak = Maximum flowrate
q = Wastewater flow per person = 0.225 lcd
P= Value of PE in thousand

4.8.2 DESIGN BALANCING TANK (BT)

Design Volume, V = Qpeak x Dr Equation 4.3

Where,
Qpeak = Maximum flowrate
Dr = Detention time

33
Capacity of provided tank can be determine by,

BT space provided = N[ (AH x LH) + (ne x Ve) ] Equation 4.4

Where,
N = Number of Balancing Tank
AH = standard cross sectional area *(the value was provide by the manufacturer)
LH = length of main body
ne = Number of end cap
Ve = Volume of end cap

4.8.3 DESIGN ANOXIC TANK (AN)

Anoxic compartment is being design to denitrifier wastewater being nitrifier at the

aeration tank. The nitrifier wastewater is returning by pump from end of aeration tank.
Mixing condition is created by using pumping outlet of MLSS pump, gravity drop
from distribution chamber. The calculation was taken from Wastewater Engineering,
Treatment, Disposal and Reuse, 3rd Edition, Metcalf and Eddy, Pg. 711-720 was
given as below.

AN space provided= N [ (AA x LA ) + (ne x Ve) ] Equation 4.5

Where,
N = Number of Anoxic Tank
AA = standard cross sectional area *(the value was provide by the manufacturer)
LA = length of main body

34
ne = Number of end cap
Ve = Volume of end cap

4.8.4 DESIGN AERATION TANK (AE)

The wastewater in the Aeration Tank is aerated for a period of 18 hours and
completely mixed with recycled sludge form Setting Tank. To determine the volume
required and capacity of provided tank for aeration tank, the equations are

V = (Q x 18) /24 Equation 4.6

AE space provided = N [ (AA x LA ) + (ne x Ve) ] Equation 4.7

Where,
N = Number of Anoxic Tank
AA = standard cross sectional area *(the value was provide by the manufacturer)
LA = length of main body
ne = Number of end cap
Ve = Volume of end cap

4.8.5 DESIGN SETTLING TANK (ST)

Settling tank functions is to separate the sludge and recycle it to Aeration Tank. Clear
Supernatant overflows uniformly over the weir and then discharges into the outlet.
Surface overflow rates shall be based on 30m3/m2/day. Settling tank specification are
given as below:

35
a. Diameter, Ø = 3.6 m
b. Water depth, d = 3.06 m
c. Surface area, A = 10.178 m2
d. Tank Capacity = 19.08 m3
e. Hydraulic Retention Time, Dr = 2 hours

However, the capacity required by the settling tank is,

Capacity = (Q x Dr) / 24 Equation 4.8

No. of tank = Capacity / Tank Capacity Equation 4.9

Surface Overflow (SOR) = Q / ( A x No. of Tank) Equation 4.10

4.8.6 DESIGN SLUDGE HOLDING TANK (SHT)

The Sludge Tank is designed to store the excess sludge and scum from the Setting
Tank. Sludge accumulation rate for Extended Aeration Process is 0.50 kg solid/kg
BOD with 1% concentration of transfer sludge. Aerobic storage tank is designed to
provide a minimum of 1 month solid storage capacity.

Equation below will show a step on how to determine the Sludge Holding Tank
Volume. The specification of the Sludge Holding Tank is given by,

a. VSS in wasted sludge = 80%

b. VSS digested = 50%
c. Specific gravity of digested sludge = 1.015
d. Density of water , γw = 1000 kg/m3

36
Therefore,

Amount of BOD loading to be removed, Total BOD =

SOR (m3/day) x 0.24 kg BOD/m3 Equation 4.11

Sludge accumulation rate =

Total BOD x 0.50 kg solid/kg BOD
Equation 4.12

Digested VSS volume =

Sludge accumulation rate x 0.80 x 0.50

4.9 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION OF DESIGNATION FRP TANK

Before design the FRP Tank, things that designer should concern about is the length
of the tank that can transport the material to site. The manufacturer has stated that the
longest length that they can transport is 5.8 meter excluding the endcaps of the tank
which makes the total of the length including the endcaps is 7.2 meter with a diameter
of 3.6 meter for each tank they provided.

In addition, the distance between tank to tank and tank to the boundary also should be
taken into the account. The distance between tank to tank during the designation is
about 0.7 meter and distance between the tanks to the boundary is 0.5 meter.

4.10 ARRANGEMENT FOR THE FRP SEWGAE PACKAGE PLANT TANK

It is important to arrange the FRP tank to save the land area and also the cost required
for the project such as the pipe fittings cost. The shortest the distance between the
tanks may require less cost. Thus, the designer needs to think how to arrange the
tanks, as well as how to save the cost during the installation and the cost of operation
in the future.

Therefore, as a new learner that needed to design and arrange the FRP tank from 300
PE until 1000 PE, manual sketch was done to give an imagination on how to do the
design. Figure 4.4 shows the manually sketch design on the first day after completing

38
the calculation of the tank. Figure 4.5 shows the amendment for after Figure 4.5 was
referred to the design engineer that held the project.

AutoCAD software for a proper design where it will be presented to the company
director before proceed to get an approval from Professional Engineer, Ir. Thong.

CHAPTER 5 DISCUSSIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS

5.1 PROBLEM OCCUR

During the calculation for 300 PE until 850 PE, there is a little problem for the
outcome since the maximum aeration tank needed is only three tanks. Also it is
possible for the aeration tank to have more number than others tank Furthermore the
700 PE design shall need to rearrange since the position of the tank was not efficient
and economic. Therefore, the arrangement needed to be change.

Figure 5.1 The original design arrangement of 700 PE

47
Figure 5.2 The amendment for 700 PE arrangement

In addition, at 900 PE until 1000 PE, the Balancing Tank (BT) required to operate the
systems is two tanks. This concerned the design engineer about the cost of installation
of the tanks.

48
Two BT
requires

Figure 5.1 Design of the 900 PE tank

Then, a meeting was held regarding this issue. The design calculation for 1000 PE was
been checked. The highest PE design was chosen to make a checking because if the
highest PE design can save the cost of installation, therefore 900 PE and 950 PE
design may also save the cost of installation as well.

Instead of using two balancing tank, we decide to cut the balancing tank and increase
the number of settling tank. Unfortunately, the settling tank requires to cater 1000 PE
is five tanks which requires more tanks compare to using the balancing tank. It also
requires more area to fits the tanks.

49
Figure 5.2 Adjustment of number of the tank requires

5.2 RECOMMENDATION

There are two recommendations that can be made in this situation which is:

a. Use two tanks of balancing tank instead of five tanks settling tank
b. Use the five number of settling tanks but rearrange the position of the
tanks.

However, the second recommendation might have more disadvantages compare to the
first recommendation since it require more cost and also high usage of land area.
Therefore, to save the usage of land area, cost and others, the meeting decided to use
two balancing tanks instead of five balancing tanks. Thus, a final ‘touch-up’ for the
design was been done before meeting the Professional Engineer to get the design
approval. Appendix 1 until appendix 18 shows the complete design for FRP tanks
before submitted to Ir. Thong.

CHAPTER 6 CONCLUSION

During 8 weeks of industrial training at One V Project Management & Consultancy,

lots of experienced that I had learnt. The most things that I learned and been taught
there were about designing. I also learned a lot about the procedure that should be
taken before submitting the design plan to the authority.

During the training, I had been brought to look how the inspection had been done
before the project can get the full Official Certificate (OC). This had made me see the
real life of being a civil engineer. Furthermore, it taught me to communicate well with
people since we are dealing with people such like the authorities, client as well as the
staffs itself and also we as a human should have a good relationship with others too.

I also learned on how to think to solve a problem where there is an issue arrive. It
taught me to make a decision when there is a critical thinking that needed to be done.
In the nutshell, this Industrial Training give me many benefits for me to learn more
about the theory since I directly use it in practical that are totally different from what I
had learned in my lectures.
