Active and Passive Voice

I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:

 identify the active and passive voice;


 distinguish between the active and passive voice; and,
 rewrite sentences from active to passive, and vice-versa.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Active and Passive Voice

Reference: Prentice Hall; Grammar and Composition 3 (2010), p. 208-211

Materials: whiteboard and marker, flash cards

Values: willingness to help with others.

III. Procedure
A. Preparatory Activities
 Prayer

 Checking of attendance
 Review of the past lesson
 Motivation
The teacher will stand in front of the class and will drop an object on the
floor. She will ask the students to tell her what had just happened and ask
them to begin the sentence with her name. She will repeat the action but this

time, she will tell the students to begin the sentence with the object. The
students will identify the subjects and the verb from the sentences.

B. Lesson Proper
Voice - tells whether the subject is the doer or the receiver of the action. Only
action verbs can indicate voice, linking verbs cannot.
2 kinds:
Active Voice - The subject of the sentence performs the action.
- It is used for making clear and strong sentences.
Examples:
Mike introduced the new manager.
Emma mails a letter.

Passive Voice - The subject of the sentence receives the action.


- This is used when we want to make the object more
important.
- It is also used when the doer of the action is unknown.
Examples:
The new manager was introduced by Mike.
The letter is mailed by Emma.

C. Enrichment Activity

D. Application
The class will be grouped into 3. Each group will be given a task to prepare
for 5-7minutes. Activities will be presented in front of the class.
Tasks:
 Group 1 will work together to change the given sentences from active
to passive.
 Group 2, using active voice, create a sentences out of the given cut out
pictures,
 Group 3 will draw a pictorial representation of a sentence they would
create.

E. Generalization
Most verbs can change form to show if the subject is performing the action or
having the action performed on it. This quality of verbs is called voice. The
verb is active if its subject performs the action and it is passive if its action is
performed upon the subject.

F Evaluation
Rewrite sentences from active to passive, and passive to active.

IV. Assignment

Cut out a short news report and paste it on a short bond paper.
Underline all the sentences that used the Active Voice of the Verb.
From the sentences that you underlined, choose five and convert it to Passive
Voice.
