1.) 50 kmol/h of a 40 mole% benzene–toluene is separated on a continuous distillation

column operating at atmospheric pressure to yield a 92 mole% distillate and 8 mole%
bottoms product. Feed is a liquid–vapor mixture in 1:1 ratio, introduced optimally. What
are the molar flows of the distillate and bottoms product?

Given:
Feed (F) = 50 kmol/hr
Benzene in F (Xf) = 0.40

Distillate (D) = ?
Benzene in D (Xd) = 0.92

Bottoms (B) = ?
Benzene in B (Xb)= 0.08

Solution:

Overall Mass Balance:

50 = B + D (1)

Benzene Balance:
50(0.40) = 0.08B + 0.92D
20 = 0.08B + 0.92D (2)

Using matrix method:

B= 30.95 kmol/hr
D= 19. 05 kmol/hr
