Use the X In SDA 142, our class was tasked with creating a dance
expressive arts as routine to the music of our choice. We were also allowed
a mode of inquiry to use any of the moves we had learned up to that point in
or expression any order that we wanted. This assignment gave me the
opportunity to open up and be creative, which is
something that I typically don’t get the opportunity to do
being in the sciences. Being able to dance to the Halo
theme music was fun and a great way of being able to
express myself.

In SCH 255, our class was asked to reflect on our

experiences with religion and if/how the course had
changed our opinion on our religion. Being able to look
back on my life and express my feelings toward my
religion not only gave me a better understanding of it, but
it also strengthened my spiritual and emotional
connections to it.

Demonstrate X In SBL 161, we were put into groups and had to work
leadership, together in order to complete our experiments. One of
negotiation, the experiments involved cutting planaria in half a certain
relational, and way and documenting their regrowth into two new
consensus skills organisms. At certain points, I would take charge and
help direct my group on what to do, at other points I
listened to my group members and did what they asked.
The experiment was very much a team effort and required
all of us to communicate and agree on different points.

In SSS 250, we had a final project that involved us being

in groups and looking at the statistics of a topic that we
choose. My group and I were able to communicate well,
we texted frequently about the project and met up at
multiple times to ensure we were all on the same page
and did the best job possible explaining the statistics on
the relationship between age and weight of juvenile
Octopi maya.

Use technological X In SBL 100, we extensively used a bacteriophage website

skills to access where we were able to look up different bacteriophages,
information, information on their DNA, and compare their DNA to the
organize DNA that we ended up finding from our bacteriophages.
knowledge, and We used this throughout the entire course, but it was
communicate especially used during our main research project where
we collected our own bacteriophages and tested to see if
their DNA was viable. We also used Microsoft Excel in
order to help organize some of the information that we
had collected.

SBL 141 was a course that was entirely online, so

everything that we did was self-directed. The professor
posted that chapters that needed to be read, homework
that needed to be done, and the tests once we finished a
certain number of chapters. In order to help learn the
terms for the exams, I used Quizlet so that I could
frequently practice and review the terms that we needed
to know for the tests.

Propose new X In SBU 270, our groups were to come up with a solution
solutions to to the problem of stores not having gender-neutral
current issues bathrooms. My group and I decided to look at stores
owned by TJX and figured out how to best implement an
all-inclusive restroom in their stores. We decided to
name it “The People’s Restroom” because it would be for
anyone to use, we also determined the costs and time
frame associated with the project in order for it to be
realistic.

In SCH 325, our end of the year assignment was to create

a presentation about a topic related to biochemistry. I
decided to look at the effect that percussion therapy has
after squatting and found that it has amazing benefits in
terms of overall recovery. This is not a solution that is
typically thought of when asked about recovery, so being
able to explain it to the class and how it can benefit
anyone (not just athletes) was satisfying.

Express X In SLA 201, our professor divided the class in half and
arguments or had us come in for only half the class so that we could
main points have discussion circles on the assigned readings or videos
clearly, in written for that week. During these discussions, the professor
and oral would ask the group questions and have us discuss our
communication opinion on the different topics throughout the course.
One of these discussions was on the crusades, whether or
not they were right, and how people were able to believe
the Pope when we talked about doing them. This
particular discussion was not one of the more heated
ones, but there were some disagreements about certain
points, mainly about whether or not the crusades were
justified.
In SBL 229, one of our assignments was to make an
argument either for or against evolution. I wrote my
paper for evolution, and cited things such as vestigial
structures, homologous structures, and the fossil record.
Vestigial structures are those that are currently present in
an organism and once had a purpose but are fairly useless
in the present time. Homologous structures are those that
are similar across many different species, such as the arm
bones of mammals, which shows that they all likely
evolved from a common ancestor and adapted to their
specific environment. The fossil record shows us the
transitions that organisms have made in order to become
the present-day ones that we see.

Transfer X In SNT 161, we learn about the importance of proper

knowledge and nutrition, hydration, and recovery for both athletes and
values into sound everyday people. During our hydration unit, we were
decision-making asked to weigh ourselves prior to and after a workout,
determine how much weight was lost during the workout,
and then determine how much fluids need to be ingested
in order to properly rehydrate (two cups of fluid per
pound of body weight lost). We recorded these numbers
and gave our thoughts on the assignment. I enjoyed it a
lot because it made me realize I was not properly
rehydrating myself, and I have felt much better after
workouts since doing this.

During SPY 110, we learned why proper sleep is

important for the brain. If the brain is deprived of sleep,
it can cause memory loss, loss of motor functions, lack of
focus, and can actually start deteriorating if too much
sleep is lost. Since learning this, I have forced myself to
get at least six hours of sleep a night (although it is
usually closer to seven) and I have definitely noticed a
difference. I have gotten significantly better at
remembering information and feel more in-control of
myself throughout the day.

II. Historical, Cultural, and Global Awareness

Communicate in X During my junior year at Seton Hill, I took SJP 100 and
a second 105. One of the tests that I took in SJP 100 had me write
language at the about myself and my daily routine, which was a fantastic
introductory way of demonstrating that I can introduce myself and give a
college level little bit of information about myself. Both semesters also
had small class sizes (less than 10 students) so this also
provided me an excellent opportunity to actually speak the
Japanese and get a more individual learning experience.

Throughout SSP 100, everyone was supposed to keep a

weekly journal that included new vocabulary that we had
learned during the week. These journals really helped me
keep up with the readings and better learn how to introduce
myself. Since these were kept in a Google Doc, my
professor was easily able to go in and critique any mistakes
that I made so that I could go fix and learn from them.

Analyze the X One of the subjects we learned about in SLA 201 was how
impact of history, eastern culture was brought to the western world. During
geography, and the days of the Maritime Silk Roads, traders would meet
socio-cultural and bring whatever they had to trade (including spices, silk,
dynamics on metals, etc.) and would also unintentionally bring their
global culture. Sometimes, the traders would like the others’
interactions from culture so much, that they brought some aspects of it back
a variety of with them and incorporated it into their lives. This is one
disciplinary of the reasons that both Asian cultures and the United
perspectives Kingdom love tea so much, they traded with each other in
the past and continue on with those traditions today.

Analyze current X In SLA 150, our final paper was to write about a social
and historical issue that is prevalent in the world and what a Pope has had
events through to say about the issue. The threat of nuclear war during the
the lens of Cold War caused many to rightfully be concerned for the
spirituality and wellbeing of the planet. Pope John XXIII wrote about this
faith in his encyclical, Pacem in Terris, condemning the use of
nuclear weapons and asking the nations that owned them to
disarm and dismantle these dangerous weapons. Pope
Francis has said the same thing in recent years, believing
that they are only kept out of fear. The Catholic faith
believes that these weapons must be dealt with in order to
prevent the possibility of an Earth-ending nuclear war.
Assess privilege X SBU 270 really opened my eyes to a lot of gender
and oppression inequalities that go on in the business world. One of the
from the biggest issues is that of the gender pay gap, an issue that’s
perspective of been affecting women for decades and persists today.
culture, race, Although it is much better today than in the past, women
class, and gender are still paid less than their male counterparts for the exact
same (or sometimes even more) work. This issue is not
only morally wrong, it can have harsh consequences for a
business. Businesses that are continuously hiring and
retraining employees because their female employees are
leaving can be costly over time and makes customers lose
respect for them as a whole. This practice needs to end so
that everyone is paid for the work they do, not their gender.

SSO 235 taught me how capitalism has had negative effects

on the environment since its beginnings. One of the
writings we looked at was about the Du Bois Nexus, which
basically states that the factors that contribute to one’s
social status, including race, class, gender, etc., need to be
looked at as an interconnected system, rather than separate
entities. He goes on to describe how people take advantage
of those they perceive as “lower” than them and force them
to work for very little or no money so that these
businesspeople can make as much profit as possible. In the
process of this, they end up destroying the environment in
order to make money, which then further disproportionately
affects those in poorer areas and nations.

III. Multiple Modes of Inquiry

Generate and X SCH 113 taught me a number of lab techniques that I have
analyze numerical used throughout my time at Seton Hill. One of the most
and scientific data important techniques I learned was how to look at data that
we generate and come to conclusions based on them.
During one of our experiments, we looked at chemical
kinetics, which is simply the time it takes for a reaction to
occur. We were given certain chemicals to mix and were
supposed to time them to see if we were able to recreate the
predicted time. While many of got close, none of us
perfectly matched the theoretical time, mostly due to
human error and type of lab equipment available to us. It
was a great lab to learn how to analyze data that we collect
for ourselves.

SBL 248 was essentially a semester long research project.

We would learn new techniques and theories that would
then have to be applied to the experiment that we were
conducting. My group and I had to keep mouse lung cells
alive in order to test the affects that nicotine had on the
expression of Bax, a protein involved in apoptosis.
Although our results ended up being mostly inconclusive
(our cells died a lot prior to nicotine treatment), we did end
up finding that cell death increased a bit as nicotine
concentration increased. Being able to analyze the data we
collected at the end of the semester was satisfying and gave
us a look into how actual research would be conducted.

Locate and X Throughout SBL 300, we had different professors come

analyze and speak to us about varying topics of their choice. One
expressive media of the professor’s topics was the COVID-19 pandemic and
to gain the misinformation surrounding it. The misinformation that
information or my group and I looked at specifically was that people have
comprehend the claimed that the United States was crushing the curve, even
significance of an though we really were not. A lot of this had to do with the
issue or an event fact that the US had a later response to the virus in
comparison to other countries which, along with the
premature reopening of businesses, has allowed the number
of cases to reach record highs. This is significant because if
people had known the truth, maybe they would not have
advocated for reopening of businesses and helped protect
more people.
Organize and X One of the projects the class did in SBL 247 a presentation
manage resources on Tykerb, which is a drug used to treat breast cancer. The
in a creative way assignment was to look at different websites that present
to achieve impact information on the drug and determine whether or not they
were reliable. My group and I did a VoiceThread for this
assignment, we believed that speaking about the websites
and giving our reasoning for each one being reliable or not
would have more of an impact than just reading words off
of a screen.

The final project for SSO 235 was to research a topic that is
related to the environment and something that is hurting it.
My group and I decided to do our presentation on
biomedical waste and how it effects the environment. In
order to achieve the most impact, we decided to use a
PowerPoint and Kahoot quiz so that the class would have
some fun listening to our presentation. We even gave away
a small reusable straw to the winner so that everyone would
actually listen, and the winner would then be helping the
environment by not wasting plastic straws.

Find, evaluate, X SBL 100 was an introductory science course that gave
and apply students the opportunity to research bacteriophages.
information Throughout the course, our groups had to find
bacteriophages in the soil, be able to “grow” them on petri
dishes, and then use gel electrophoresis to determine if their
DNA should be sequenced. Since not much is known about
bacteriophages, most of the information on them we had to
find and evaluate ourselves. One day, this information will
be applied to the medical field in order to help fight
bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics, since
bacteriophages vary greatly and can attack a wide range of
bacterial species.

The final paper for SPY 110 involved students watching a

movie and applying any psychological theories we felt were
appropriate to the film. I decided to evaluate “Star Wars:
Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” as it is one of my
favorite movies. I was able to find numerous examples of
different psychological theories and applied them to the
movie, giving an in-depth analysis of how and why certain
characters acted in certain ways. Although the movie was
set in a fiction universe, being able to apply real-life
psychology to it was a cool experience and helped me
realize how important the field is.
Interpret X In SNT 161 everyone had to come up with a presentation
quantitative and on some sort of nutrition-related topic. I decided to look up
qualitative the effects that creatine monohydrate has on the body, for
information to both athletes and the average person. I looked at multiple
present a logical different primary research papers, meta-analyses, position
argument based papers, and other articles in order to determine how
on supporting effective and safe creatine monohydrate really is. My
data stance on the topic is that it is one of the most safe and
effective supplements currently available to the public and
has numerous benefits for everyone, everything from
increased strength to increased protection from
neurodegenerative diseases.

One of the assignments that everyone had in SBL 220 was

to choose structure from a list and research whether or not
we believed it was vestigial. I did my presentation on the
teeth that duck-billed platypuses, which fall out soon after
hatching. During my research, I could not find any credible
sources that believed that these teeth were not vestigial, so
my final conclusion that these structures serve no purpose
in modern-day platypuses, but were more than likely used
for eating in their ancestors.

Demonstrate X In SPL 210, we watched a movie called “Flight”, which is

ethical decision- about the ethical decisions that an alcoholic pilot makes
making throughout the movie. After the movie, we were asked to
grounded in write an essay about it and some times when we had to
philosophical make ethical decisions. Although I was raised to be a
inquiry pretty non-troublesome person, I have had my share of
decisions. Nothing major, mostly lying, but I have always
owned up to my choices and accepted the punishment for
them.

In SBL 212, we were put into groups and had to research a

topic related to genetics. My group and I decided to do our
presentation on human subject research, a highly
controversial topic that has caused issues in the past. We
discussed different types of human subject research, along
with how and when it should be used. For example, one of
the unethical studies we looked at involved prisoners
receiving radiation to their testicles in exchange for money
or the possibility of parole. This is an inhumane study as
the majority of the subjects went on to develop cancer or
other complications that showed up later in their lives. Our
presentation helped us learn what types of studies would be
ethical to conduct and which ones would not be.

Apply Catholic X One of the projects we did in SCH 212 had students trying
social teaching to find an alternative to chromium reagents. Chromium
to the analysis of reagents contain heavy metals would are harmful to both
contemporary the environment and human health. Being able to find a
social issues safer alternative (such as oxoammonium salts) is preferred
and follows CST principles about taking care of one
another along with the planet as a whole. The only
principle that we found did not directly relate to this topic
was the principle of association, since chromium does not
really have anything to do with how humans socially
interact.

The social action project that my partner and I did for SLA
400 was called “Kindness in Cards for Westmoreland
Manor”. We handed blank cards out to students, friends,
and family and asked them to write nice or uplifting things
in order to help cheer up the residents at Westmoreland
Manor during these unprecedented times. We ended up
getting back over 350 cards, which was more than enough
for every resident to get one. We decided on this social
action project because seniors are among the most
vulnerable groups in the world, especially those that are in
care facilities. Since Catholic social teachings preach
taking care of the vulnerable, we wanted to make sure that
the seniors at Westmoreland Manor knew that people cared
about them, even if we do not necessarily know who they
are.

Recognize the X Throughout the semester in SLA 150, we learned about the
value of diverse major religions in the world. Our midterm exam was on
spiritual and aspects from Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism,
religious and atheism. Part of the exam was about how these
perspectives religions differed, but more importantly, how they
overlapped and drew concepts from one another. This
helped me understand that all religions have value,
regardless of whether I believe in their views or not.

During my sophomore year, I attended a conference that

featured a number of speakers who spoke about Islam.
Many of these speakers were from predominantly Islamic
nations and have published books in their respective areas
of study. Listening to them gave me a greater
understanding of Islam and what Muslims actually believe
in. Their perspectives and insight honestly gave me a much
greater deal of respect for their religion and culture.

Integrate the X The restroom assignment that my class had for SBU 270
practice of involves both charity and justice. Gender-neutral restrooms
charity with the provide a direct service to those that are uncomfortable
skill of justice using a men’s or women’s restroom. They also help
promote social change by providing a safe space for
transgender individuals to go without fear of being judged,
thus helping them in becoming confident and reducing hate
toward them.

Exercise X As an extra credit assignment for SSO 235, the professor

responsible told the class about a climate strike rally that was being
freedom and held in Greensburg. I decided to go and am glad that I did,
civic because I heard a lot of great speakers, including one of the
engagement sisters of charity and students from the area. The rally was
based on an held in front of the Westmoreland County Courthouse in
informed value the hopes of convincing the local officials that something
system needed to be done about climate change.

During my freshman year, I went with the chemistry and

biology club to help clean trash off the side of the roads that
go through Twin Lakes. I did not have to do this, I wanted
to because I hate seeing trash on the side of the road and
saw an opportunity to help clean it up. I wanted to be able
to help keep that beautiful area clean and was not forced to
do so, which made me feel much better about helping out
the environment.
