Keratin – scleroprotein that is insoluble with water
Melanin – major skin determinant
Dermis – inner layer of the skin
Sebaceous glands – attached in hair follicles and
present over most of the body, excluding the soles and
palms; secretes sebum
Eccrine glands – located over the entire skin and
secretes sweat
Apocrine glands – hair follicles in axillae, perineum and
areolae of breasts
Subcutaneous tissue – a loose connective tissue
containing fat cells
Vellus hair – short, pale, fine, and present over much of
the body
