HOW TO USE THIS MODULE

Welcome to the Module “Preparing Electrical Power and Hydraulic Tools”. This
module contains training materials and activities for to complete.

The unit of competency “Prepare Electrical Power and Hydraulic Tools” contains
knowledge, skills and attitudes required for Electrical Installation and Maintenance NC II
Qualification.

You are required to go through a series of learning activities in order to complete each of
the learning outcomes of the module. In each learning outcome there are Information Sheets
and Task Sheets. Follow these activities in your own and answer the Self-Check at the end of
each learning activity.

If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask your facilitator for assistance.

Recognition of the Prior Learning (RPL)

You may already have some of the knowledge and skills covered in this module because
you have:
 been working for some time
 training related to this area of qualification
 already have completed training in this area.

If you can demonstrate to your trainer that you are competent in a particular skill or
skills, talk to him/her about having them formally recognized so you don’t have to do the same
training again. If you have a qualification or Certificate of Competency from previous trainings
show it to your trainer. If the skills you acquired are still current and relevant to this module, they
may become part of the evidence you can present for RPL. If you are not sure about the current
of your skills, discuss it with your trainer.

Methodology 1 BTVTED II-A SUMAGAYSAY
Learning Outcome:
After reading the information sheet student will be able to:
1. Identify the different types of maintenance
2. Prepare a Maintenance Schedule
3. Apply the maintenance schedule in maintaining electrical power and hydraulic tools.

Maintenance

 Maintenance is an action carried out to retain electrical power and hydraulic tools in
an acceptable condition,
 The principal objectives of maintenance can be clearly defined as follows:
o To extend the useful life of electrical power and hydraulic tools
o To assure the optimum availability of electrical power and hydraulic tools
o To ensure operational readiness of electrical power and hydraulic tools
o To ensure safety of personnel using electrical power and hydraulic tools

Types of Maintenance

1. Planned Maintenance – Work activities are performed as scheduled or expected

a. Preventive Maintenance –Maintenance performed to prevent or find failure before
they develop into breakdown
b. Predictive Maintenance – Maintenance performed at a predetermined periods
when the maintenance activity is most cost effective and before the equipment
fails.
2. Unplanned Maintenance – Maintenance performed unexpectedly
a. Emergency – Maintenance performed to put the item on hand IMMEDIATELY to
avoid serious consequences.

Maintenance Schedule – Is a list allocating specific maintenance of equipment and tools

to a specific period.

Why Maintain Inventory of Tools and Equipment?

The most significant point to think at the start of your career is to acquire branded tools.
They must be made out of high-quality steel and manufactured for precision. Special
consideration is given to balance so that the tool/equipment will be properly maintained and
prevent loses. Since the technician must work with his tools daily, regular inventory of
tools/equipment is very significant.
The initial cost of a minimum number of tools is high but there is accompanying
warranty guarantees satisfaction and many years of service. It is better, in the long run, to start
with a few cautiously selected tools that will take care of your most common needs and then
slowly build-up to a complete set. It is sometimes hard to identify and memorize the huge
number of tools and equipment in the workshop, maintaining the inventory record is of great
value.

Maintaining and Storing Tools & Equipment
An important aspect of any business is the maintenance and storage of tools and
equipment. The investment in tools and equipment is a significant part of the overhead expenses
in any operation. Proper selection and maintenance of equipment are important factors in
managing business. Selecting the proper tool for the job and using the tool properly will increase
efficiency and reduce maintenance problems. Purchase tools, which are well-made and suited to
the intended use. Commercial usage may entail more heavy duty demands on equipment.
Power tools:
1. Read and follow the maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual for each piece of power
equipment.
2. Change the oil.
3. Clean the air filter.
4. Lubricate moving parts.
5. Sharpen dull blades or replace worn blades according to the owner’s manual.
6. Replace spark plugs.
7. Drain oil and gasoline before long-term storage.
8. Check electric cords and connections on electric-powered tools.
9. Store tools in a clean dry storage area.

Equipment:
1. Store equipment in a clean dry storage area.
2. Rinse and clean spray equipment after each use.
3. Clean spreaders and check wheel-driven gears.
4. Clean carts and wheelbarrows after use.

Lubricants

The function of a lubricant is simple - reduce friction between moving metal surfaces. A
lubricant coats surfaces and resists being displaced by pressure, keeping the metal parts
separated. Lubricants also prevent corrosion, block contaminants and can serve as a coolant. A
good lubricant flows easily under pressure and remains in contact with moving surfaces. It does
not leak out from gravitational or centrifugal forces, nor does it stiffen in cold temperatures.

Qualification Title : Electrical Installation Maintenance NC-II
Unit of Competency : Prepare Electrical Power and Hydraulic Tools
Module Title : Preparing and Maintaining Electrical Power and Hydraulic Tools

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module, the trainee must be able to:
LO 1. Select Electrical Power and Hydraulic Tools
LO 2. Maintain Electrical Power and Hydraulic Tools

A. INTRODUCTION
Pipe threading is the most common activity of an electrician and a
plumber. Philippine Electrical Code determines the proper conduit used in
electrical wiring installation to be electrically secured and mechanically strong.
Electrical wiring methods requires specific conduits to satisfy the safety
requirement of installation and electrical metal conduits such as rigid steel
conduit and intermediate metal conduit are the identified electrical conduit.
Installation of these conduits requires a pipe threading activity to couple the
conduit and its fittings. Electrician performing pipe threading uses hand tools
or pipe threading machine to perform better.
