A relation is a rule that relates the values from a set of values (called the
domain) to a second set of values (called the range).
Solution. The relations f and g are functions because no two ordered pairs
have the same x-value but different y-values, while g is not a function
because (1,3) and (1,4) are ordered pairs with the same x-value but
different y-values.

Evaluating a Function means replacing the variable in the functions, in this case x,
with the value from the function’s domain and computing for the result. To denote
that we are evaluating f at a for some a in the domain of f, we write f(a).
a) f(x)=2x+1
Solution:
To evaluate f(x) at x = 1, just substitute 1 to the value of x in the equation and
solve.
f(1)=2(1)+1
=2+1
f(1) =3
b) q(x)=x2-2x+2
Solution:
The same with the process in the above example, just replace 2 in the value
of x then simplify.
q(2)=(2)2 – 2(2) +2
=4–4+2
q(1)= 2
Example. Evaluate the function at x = 8.
c) g(x)=√𝑥 + 1
Solution:
Substitute 8 in the equation and simplify.
g(1)= √8 + 1
g(1)= √9
g(1) = 3
1) f(x)=2x+1
2) q(x)=3x2-x+2
3) g(x)= √2𝑥 + 5
4𝑥−1
4) r(x)=

√6𝑥+13
5) h(x) =

Exercise 3. Answer the following word problems. Show all the necessary solutions.
1) Mark started selling snacks at the nearby school. In one day he spends P200
for rent and P25 for each snack item he prepares. His expenses in a single
day can be expressed as the function C(x) = 25x + 200, where x is the number
of items and C(x) is his daily expenses in pesos. How much are his expenses
if he prepares 100 snack items? 150 snack items?
2) The function for the height of an object dropped from a 100-meter tall
platform at time t seconds is approximated by s(t) = - 5t2 + 100 (This formula
is based on an approximated value of the acceleration g = 10m/s2 due to
gravity). What is the height of an object after 2 seconds? After 4 seconds?

a) f(x) = 2x + 1 g(x) = 3x – 5
f + g = f(x) + g(x)
= (2x+1) + (3x – 5) substitute 2x + 1 in f(x) and 3x – 5 in g(x)
= 2x + 1 + 3x – 5 distribute the “+” sign in (3x – 5)
= 2x + 3x +1 – 5 combine similar terms
f + g = 5x – 4 final answer

Definition.
Let f and g be functions. The composite functions, denoted by (𝑓 ∘ 𝑔), is defined by
(𝑓 ∘ 𝑔)(𝑥) = 𝑓(𝑔(𝑥)).
Example
a) f(x) = 2x + 1 g(x) = √𝑥 + 1
b) q(x) = x2 – 2x + 2 F(x) = x + 1
2𝑥+1
c) r(x) =
𝑥−1
Solution
To find the function (𝑔 ∘ 𝑓)(𝑥), substitute the value of f(x) in the function g(x).
(𝑔 ∘ 𝑓)(𝑥) = 𝑔(𝑓(𝑥))
= √𝑓(𝑥) + 1 instead of using “x” in the function, use “f(x)”
= √(2𝑥 + 1) + 1 substitute the value of f(x) then simplify
= √2𝑥 + 2 final answer
Exercise. Given the following functions, find (𝑞 ∘ 𝑓)(𝑥), (𝑓 ∘ 𝑞)(𝑥), (𝑔 ∘ 𝑓)(𝑥), and
(𝑓 ∘ 𝑔)(𝑥).
a) f(x) = x + 2
b) g(x) = √3𝑥 − 1
c) q(x) = 𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 + 10

Definition.
A polynomial function p of degree n is a function that can be written in the form
𝑝(𝑥)
A rational function is a function of the form 𝑓(𝑥) = where 𝑝(𝑥) and 𝑞(𝑥) are
𝑞(𝑥)
polynomial functions, and 𝑞(𝑥) is not the zero function (i.e., 𝑞(𝑥) ≠ 0). The domain
of 𝑓(𝑥) is all values of 𝑥 where 𝑞(𝑥) ≠ 0.
𝟏𝟎
The function v(t) = can represent v as a function of t.

𝟓𝒕
Example 2. Suppose that c(t)= 𝟐 (in mg/ml) represents the concentration of a
𝒕 +𝟏
drug in a patient’s bloodstream t hours after the drug was admitted. Construct a
table of values for c(t) for t = 1,2,5,10. Round off answers to three decimal places.
Use the table to sketch the graph and interpret the results.
Solution.
𝟓𝒕
To find the value of c(t), substitute each value of t in the function c(t)= 𝟐
𝒕 +𝟏
𝟓(𝟎)
c(0)= =𝟎
(𝟎)𝟐 +𝟏
𝟓(𝟏) 𝟓
c(1)= = = 𝟐. 𝟓

𝟓(𝟐) 𝟏𝟎 𝟏𝟎
c(2)= = = =𝟐

𝟓(𝟓) 𝟐𝟓 𝟐𝟓 𝟐𝟓
c(5)= = = = = 𝟎. 𝟗𝟔𝟐
(𝟓)𝟐 +𝟏 (𝟓)𝟐 +𝟏 𝟐𝟓+𝟏 𝟐𝟔
𝟓(𝟏𝟎) 𝟓𝟎 𝟓𝟎
c(10)= = = = 𝟎. 𝟒𝟗𝟓
(𝟏𝟎)𝟐 +𝟏 𝟏𝟎𝟎+𝟏 𝟏𝟎𝟏
t 0 1 2 5 10
The graph indicates that the maximum drug concentration occurs around 1 hour
after the drug was administered. After 1 hour, the graph suggests that the drug
concentration decreases until it is almost zero.
Exercise
a) The local barangay received a budget of P100, 000 to provide medical
checkups for the children in the barangay. The amount is to be allotted
equally among all the children in the barangay. The relationship between the
allotted amount per child (g(x)) and the number of children (x) is given by
the function
100 000
𝑔(𝑥) =

Fill up the table below with different allotment amounts for different values for
the number of children.
