A relation is a rule that relates the values from a set of values (called the
domain) to a second set of values (called the range).

A function is a relation where each element in the domain is related to only


one value in the range by some rule. In other words, a function is a set of
ordered pairs where no two ordered pairs will have the same first
element.

Example 1. Which of the following relations are functions?


a) f = {(1,2), (2,2),(3,5),(4,5)}
b) g = {(1,3),(1,4),(2,5),(2,6),(3,7)}
c) h = {(1,3),(2,6),(3,9),…,(n,3n),…}

Solution. The relations f and g are functions because no two ordered pairs
have the same x-value but different y-values, while g is not a function
because (1,3) and (1,4) are ordered pairs with the same x-value but
different y-values.

Relations and functions can be represented by mapping diagrams where the


elements of the domain are mapped to the elements of the range using
arrows. In this case, the relation or function is represented by the set of all
the connections represented by the arrows.
Example 2.

Solution. The relations f and g are functions because each x in X corresponds to a


unique y in Y. The relation h is not a function because there is at least one element
in X for which there is more than one corresponding y-value. For example, x =7
corresponds to y =11 or 13. Similarly, x =2 corresponds to both y=17 or 19.

Evaluating a Function means replacing the variable in the functions, in this case x,
with the value from the function’s domain and computing for the result. To denote
that we are evaluating f at a for some a in the domain of f, we write f(a).

Example. Evaluate the following functions at x = 1.

a) f(x)=2x+1

Solution:
To evaluate f(x) at x = 1, just substitute 1 to the value of x in the equation and
solve.
f(1)=2(1)+1
=2+1
f(1) =3

Example. Evaluate the function at x = 2

b) q(x)=x2-2x+2

Solution:
The same with the process in the above example, just replace 2 in the value
of x then simplify.
q(2)=(2)2 – 2(2) +2
=4–4+2
q(1)= 2
Example. Evaluate the function at x = 8.
c) g(x)=√𝑥 + 1

Solution:
Substitute 8 in the equation and simplify.
g(1)= √8 + 1
g(1)= √9
g(1) = 3

of items and C(x) is his daily expenses in pesos. How much are his expenses
if he prepares 100 snack items? 150 snack items?

2) The function for the height of an object dropped from a 100-meter tall
platform at time t seconds is approximated by s(t) = - 5t2 + 100 (This formula
is based on an approximated value of the acceleration g = 10m/s2 due to
gravity). What is the height of an object after 2 seconds? After 4 seconds?

Definition.
Let f and g be functions. The composite functions, denoted by (𝑓 ∘ 𝑔), is defined by

(𝑓 ∘ 𝑔)(𝑥) = 𝑓(𝑔(𝑥)).

The process of obtaining a composite function is called function composition.

Example
a) f(x) = 2x + 1 g(x) = √𝑥 + 1
b) q(x) = x2 – 2x + 2 F(x) = x + 1

Find and simplify (𝑔 ∘ 𝑓)(𝑥)

Solution
To find the function (𝑔 ∘ 𝑓)(𝑥), substitute the value of f(x) in the function g(x).
(𝑔 ∘ 𝑓)(𝑥) = 𝑔(𝑓(𝑥))
= √𝑓(𝑥) + 1 instead of using “x” in the function, use “f(x)”
= √(2𝑥 + 1) + 1 substitute the value of f(x) then simplify
= √2𝑥 + 2 final answer

Find and simplify (𝑞 ∘ 𝐹)(𝑥)


To find the function (𝑞 ∘ 𝐹)(𝑥), substitute the value of f(x) in the function q(x).
(𝑞 ∘ 𝐹)(𝑥) = 𝑞(𝐹(𝑥))
= [𝐹(𝑥)]2 – 2F(x) + 2 instead of using “x” in the function, use “F(x)”
= (𝑥 + 1)2 – 2(𝑥 + 1)+ 2 substitute the value of F(x)
= (𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 + 1) – 2x – 2 + 2 use the appropriate operations of functions,
in this case, product of functions.
=𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 – 2x – 2 + 2 + 1 combine “like” terms
= x2 + 1 final answer
Find and simplify (𝑟 ∘ 𝑓)(3)
To find the function (𝑔 ∘ 𝑓)(3), substitute the value of f(x) in the function r(x).

Definition.
A polynomial function p of degree n is a function that can be written in the form

of the polynomial function. The constants 𝑎0 , 𝑎1 , … , 𝑎𝑛 are the coefficients. The
leading coefficient is 𝑎𝑛 . The leading term is 𝑎𝑛 𝑥 𝑛 and the constant terms is 𝑎0 .

𝑝(𝑥)
A rational function is a function of the form 𝑓(𝑥) = where 𝑝(𝑥) and 𝑞(𝑥) are

polynomial functions, and 𝑞(𝑥) is not the zero function (i.e., 𝑞(𝑥) ≠ 0). The domain
of 𝑓(𝑥) is all values of 𝑥 where 𝑞(𝑥) ≠ 0.

Example 1. An object is to travel a distance of 10 meters. Express velocity v as a
