a. The teacher asks beginning-level students to write a composition about the system of
transportation in their home countries. If they need a vocabulary word that they do not
know, they are told to look in a bilingual dictionary for a translation.
Answer:

This technique doesn‟t follow the principles of the Audio-Lingual Method because in ALM,
writing is not the skill which receive most of the attention and vocabulary is not studied a lot. In
other words, in ALM, the students do not do writing activity and learning vocabulary a lot.
Instead of Audio-Lingual Method, this technique follows the principle of Grammar-Translation
Method.

b. Toward the end of the third week of the course, the teacher gives students a reading

Answer:

This technique doesn‟t follow the principles of the Audio-Lingual Method because in ALM,
reading is not the skill which receive most of the attention and the students do not do reading
activity a lot. So, the test which is given to the students should not about reading, but it can be
about the sound system or grammatical patterns.

2. Some people believe that knowledge of a first and second language can be helpful to learners
who are trying to learn a third language. What would an Audio- Lingual teacher say about
this? Why?
Answer:

 In the Audio-Lingual Method, the students‟ native language will not be helpful for them
in learning the target language. It is because in the teaching and learning process there is
no translation activity where the students may translate words or sentences from the
target language to their native language. During the class the teacher and the students
only use the target language in communication or in the teaching and learning process.
So, the students‟ native language will not be in any of use.

b. Toward the end of the third week of the course, the teacher gives students a reading

upon it. The passage contains words and structures introduced during the first three weeks of the
course, because the Audio-Lingual Method is a teaching method that emphasizes the teaching of
a foreign language of listening and speaking before reading and writing. Practiced special
patterns from language through structured dialogue and drill until finally a response came
automatically. The Audio-Lingual Method is a and c because the process of writing in advance
without hearing and speaking makes disciples harder to understand because it is not given an
explanation or image of what they will do.

2. The audio-lingual teacher says it is true because the first language is so closely related to
cognitive development, if the child can produce a speech based on regular grammatical neatly, it
does not automatically imply that the child has mastered the language properly. So, too, is the
second language to choose when one acquires a language of another after first mastering to a
certain extent his first language or the term is a foreign one. With knowledge of the first and
second languages it makes it easier for a person to want to learn a third language by practicing
the way he taught a second language, because our first language is gained by imitating a
language first in the family, in this process without realizing that we have learned a language.

Answer: This technique doesn‟t follow the principles of the Audio-Lingual Method. This

audio methods are a method that USES hearing and pronunciation exercises in language
learning. The emergence of this method is based on the assumption that language is speaking

2. Mastery of the first and second languages can facilitate mastery of the third language, but
it can be very difficult to master it on the other hand, depending on how each individual
learns it. The reason why mastering a first and second language can make it easier to
learn a third is because if you studied your L2 as a teenager or an adult, you have
succeeded in figuring out what strategies work best for you. The more extroverts of us
enjoy talking to speakers of the target language, while the introverts prefer pouring out
textbooks and grammar books. Research also shows that learners who are both language
literate, and those with metalinguistic knowledge, are in a particularly advantageous
position because, among other things, metalinguistic awareness enables them to make
comparisons and generate creative hypotheses. And what gets interesting when it comes
to third languages. We know that our first language L1 affects the learning process of
other languages, but we do not always expect that our L2 also wants to play an active role
in L3 learning. Then most likely our L1 and L2 can also play a role in studying our L3
which we are trying to master.

ANSWERED:

The Audio-Lingual method is a teaching style used in teaching foreign languages

which recognizes that certain traits or characteristics of living things can be trained
throught a reinforcement system that emphasizes the teachings of listening and
speaking before reading and writing.

In the first part of the technique, I think it follows the principles of the Audio-Lingual
Method. Because the principles of the Audio-lingual method relate to Writing,
reading, listening and speaking. then the form of the technique in the first part shows
that the teacher is asking students to write.

a The teacher asks beginning-level students to write a composition about the system of

verbs into the third person singular present tense form.

Some people believe that knowledge of a first and second language can be helpful to learners
who are trying to learn a third language. What would an Audio- Lingual teacher say about this?
Why?

Answer
1. I think the answer is in part C, the reason is because the teacher tells the student to add the
letter "s" to the present tense of the third person singular verb in English. After that the teacher
gives the student a list of verbs then converts it into the current third person singular because
basically the aim of the Audio-Lingual Method is to train the basic speaking skills of the students
being taught. Repetition and imitation done by students must be correct because it is one of the
results of the technique.

2. Mastery of the first and second languages can help in mastering the third language because
learning the first language or L1 can affect the learning process of other languages or affect the
mastery of a second or L2 language later. Likewise in mastering L2 when they are adults and still
teenagers, at least we can find out what strategy is right for us in understanding the language to
be learned. The essence of the above is that mastery of the first or second language can help
make it easier to master the third language, but this can also depend on how each of us learns it.

1. From all three points. I think the b and c points are using the audio-lingual methods.
As we know The Audio-lingual Method is a method for foreign language teaching
which emphasized the teaching of listening and speaking before reading and writing.
Then, written exercises are given to learners as a summary of what has been learned
orally. In the Audio-lingual Method, the students first hear a language. Later, they
speak the language and after that, they read and write in it. At point (B) it is said that
students were given reading passages or rehearsals on the week of the lesson. Which
means one should give a few exercises after studying orally a few weeks ago. For that
point this includes using audio-lingual methods , because it lists an exercise such as
answering a question related to last week's dialogue on the third week of learning.
And in point (C) teachers teach students that they should add a single verb from 's' to
the third person in the English present tense. In this context the teacher gives the
student a grammar principle. Where the grammar is one of great importance and an

objective in the audio-lingual methods. At this point too, the teacher seems to be
justifying the students' faults in grammar, as in the audio-lingual method principle. As
for point (A) it is not one of the audio-lingual method techniques. Because as we
know that this method prioritizes lessons through listening and speaking that use drill
techniques. And at this point it only emphasizes the discovery of new vocabulary in
the literature, and then it looks for meaning in the dictionary.

2. In the audio-lingual method principle, each language has a limited pattern. Practice
patterns help students form habits that enable students to use those patterns. Which
means that when one has been accustomed to speaking another language it is easier to
learn another language, because he already knows how and technique to learn a new
language. Because it all takes practice and repetition, so it makes it easier. For that,
knowledge of first and second languages can help to learn a third language.

1. Which of the techniques below follows from the principles of the Audio-Lingual Method, and
which ones do not? Explain the reasons for your answer.

A. The teacher asks beginning-level students to write a composition about the system of
transportation in their home countries. If they need a vocabulary word that they do not know,
they are told to look in a bilingual dictionary for a translation.
B. Toward the end of the third week of the course, the teacher gives students a reading passage.
The teacher asks the students to read the passage and to answer certain questions based upon it.
The passage contains words and structures introduced during the first three weeks of the course.
C. The teacher tells the students that they must add an 's' to third person singular verbs in the
present tense in English. She then gives the students a list of verbs and asks them to change the
verbs into the third person singular present tense form.

Answer :
The audio-lingual method is a method that focuses on practice activities, drills, memorizing
vocabulary, dialogue, reading text. In my opinion, the answer in accordance with the principles
of the audio lingual method is point (C). This is because these examples can train students'
grammar in a context. That way students can express themselves, even in a limited portion.
Whereas point (A) is not an example of the principle of the audio-lingual method, because it is
more inclined towards the grammar translation method because it looks for the meaning of new
vocabulary through bilingual dictionaries, usually students are only given sufficient vocabulary
(especially those that are often used in everyday life) so that the implementation of this method
can run smoothly. The last, part (B) is included in an example of the principle of the audio-
lingual method, because in my opinion this is an example of the question and answer drill
technique. This drill model trains students to answer questions correctly. The mastery of
sentence patterns is done with pattern-practice exercises. The exercise or drill follows the
sequence: stimulus> response> reinfrcement.

2. Some people believe that knowledge of a first and second language can be helpful to learners
who are trying to learn a third language. What would an Audio- Lingual teacher say about this?
Why?

Answer :
This depends on each individual in the process of learning it. The first and second languages will
make it easier to learn the third language, because when learning a second language, you can find
a suitable strategy. Research shows that language literate learners, and those with metalinguistic
knowledge, are in a very favorable position. because, metalinguistic awareness will enable them
to make comparisons and generate creative hypotheses. Therefore, first and second languages are
important things and experiences in the third language learning process.

J. The teacher asks beginning-level students to write a composition about the system of

not know, they are told to look in a bilingual dictionary for a translation.
K. Toward the end of the third week of the course, the teacher gives students a reading

questions based upon it. The passage contains words and structures introduced during
the first three weeks of the course.
L. The teacher tells the students that they must add an 's' to third person singular verbs in
the present tense in English. She then gives the students a list of verbs and asks them
to change the verbs into the third person singular present tense form.

4. Some people believe that knowledge of a first and second language can be helpful to
learners who are trying to learn a third language. What would an Audio- Lingual teacher
say about this? Why?
Answer
1. I think that following the principles of the audio-lingual method is the point c. Because the
audio-lingual method trains students in using grammatical sentence patterns and this method
also aims to practice speaking as a basic skill, not only practicing speaking but listening,
writing and reading. And those who do not or do not follow the principles of the audio-
lingual method, namely points a and b point a because this method is more directed towards
the grammar-translation method technique because it looks at a bilingual dictionary to
translate and point B because it does not follow the principles of the audio-lingual method,
but it can be a technique of practicing the reading method.

2. because audio-lingual teachers are used as role models for the language. Students will imitate
the correct form. Language learning is a habit. Repeat and drill as often as possible. They
have a role to play in guiding students to use correct pronunciation, and it's good to have a
language learning experience right before you learn your third language, so you have
subconsciously honed your second nature to learn a new language, and this audio-lingual is
the method. teaching foreign languages which emphasizes teaching listening and speaking
before reading and writing. It uses dialogue as the main form of presentation and language
practice as the main training technique, therefore anyone trying to learn a third language, it
will be very easy for them to understand the lesson because they already have some
experience. , that's what an audio-language teacher would say about it

1. In my opinion, the correct answer is C that is, Teacher tells students that they have to give "s"
to the third person singular verb in the present tense in English. He then gave the students a list
of verbs and asked them to change the verb to the current third person singular.
Reason: the purpose of the Audio-Lingual Method is to practice speaking as a basic skill.
Imitation and repetition must be correct because it is one of the results of the technique, L2
learning requires basic information and communication must follow the correct authentic
material, the conversation on the topic, the chain exercises provided.

2. Mastery of the first and second languages can facilitate mastery of the third language, but on
the other hand it will be very difficult to master it, depending on how each individual learns it.
Reason: because if you studied L2 as a teenager or an adult, you've figured out what strategy
works best for you. More and more of us extroverts enjoy talking to speakers of the target
language, whereas introverts prefer to write textbooks and grammar books. Research also shows
that language-literate learners, and those with metalinguistic knowledge, are in a particularly
advantageous position because, among other things, metalinguistic awareness enables them to
make comparisons and generate creative hypotheses. And what's interesting when it comes to a
third language. We know that our first language L1 affects the learning process of other
languages, but we do not always expect our L2 to also want to play an active role in L3 learning.
Then most likely our L1 and L2 can also play a role in studying our L3 which we are trying to
master.

Answer :

The audio - lingual method teacher would say that it's irrelevant how many other languages the
learner knows - with the exception perhaps of languages that have similar sounds to the language
being learned, as this would help with clear pronunciation.
Through repetition and memorization, all method teaches language out of context, which is one
of its weaknesses.

a The teacher asks beginning-level students to write a composition about the system of
transportation in their home countries. If they need a vocabulary word that they do not
know, they are told to look in a bilingual dictionary for a translation.

Answer: This technique doesn‟t follow the principles of the Audio-Lingual Method. This
technique follows the Grammar-Translation Method because the students have to
look in a bilingual dictionary for a translation. But the audio-lingual method states
that we must not use translation as an activity to teach vocabulary. We should create
and use new ways to explain an unknown word. We can use realia, flashcard,
gestures, mimictry, synonym, and antonyms to explain a word definition or
meaning.

b Toward the end of the third week of the course, the teacher gives students a reading
passage. The teacher asks the students to read the passage and to answer certain questions
based upon it. The passage contains words and structures introduced during the first three
weeks of the course.

Answer: This technique doesn‟t follow the principles of the Audio-Lingual Method. Because
this technique is practice reading method. But the audio-lingual method states that The
teacher writes the dialogue on the blackboard toward the end of the week. The
students do some limited written work with the dialogue and the sentence drills.

c The teacher tells the students that they must add an ‘ s’ to third person singular verbs
in the present tense in English. She then gives the students a list of verbs and asks them to
change the verbs into the third person singular present tense form.

Answer: This technique doesn‟t follow the principles of the Audio-Lingual Method. Because
the audio-lingual method is no grammar rule will ever be given to the students. The
students will be led to figure out the rules from their work with the examples the and
drill that the teacher provides.
