Stuck pipe / fishing – TASKS:

Task Date DS sign

With the Toolpusher,
identify and verify the
SINOPEC fishing tool
inventory on rig 50117.
Discuss with the mud
Engineers the implications
of stuck pipe & how we can
minimise this. Identify AVA
products to remedy stuck
pipe.
With the Toolpusher,
select an overshot and
dress it with spiral grapple,
control ring, lip guide, etc.
Colour code the overshot
parts to correspond with
each individual overshot,
e.g. a blue band for all 8”
overshot parts.
Read the manual on wireline
stripping.
Verify that there are

sufficient tubulars on
location to fish the BHA.
When Schlumberger are on
site, verify with the
Engineer that he has
appropriate fishing tools.

Stuck pipe / fishing – QUESTIONS:

1. If a wireline toolstring becomes stuck in

the hole with radioactive sources inside,
can we abandon the tools and sidetrack?

2. If the above toolstring is not moving and

we are approaching the limit of the weak
point, what can we do?

3. Briefly describe this technique.

4. List 2 methods of determining the depth

that a string is stuck.

5. If a string is stuck and we are using 5”

19.5 ppf drillpipe, the measured stretch is
32 inches with 80,000 lbs, what depth are
we stuck?

6. When backing off above a stuck point,

which type of connection do you think
should be broken?

7. When backing off, list some precautions

which you think should be in force to
ensure a safe operation.

8. List 3 things we need for a successful

back off.

9. List five ways in which differential

pressure sticking can be prevented and
minimised.

10. A lower mud gradient can reduce the

problems of differential pressure sticking.
When can this technique not be used?

11. What method can be used to free a string

stuck in salt if limited circulation is
possible?

12. The following well is being drilled and the

string has become stuck when POOH for a
bit change (the bit is at the bottom of the
salt). Hole size is 12 ¼”. Calculate how
much water to be pumped to cover the
entire salt section. Calculate how many
pump strokes to spot the water pill.
Calculate how many pump strokes before
the top of the water will appear on
surface after the pill has soaked. Write a
procedure for the whole operation.

Top of salt at 629m

Bottom of salt at 760m
Length of 8” drillcollars 111m
Length of 5” HWDP 137m
13 3/8” shoe at 411m
Surface line volume 5 bbls
Pump has 6 ½” liners, 10” stroke and is 95%
efficient.

13. What type of stuck pipe problem is often

tackled with a surface bumper sub or jar?
State two precautions that should be
taken when using this tool.

14. Calculate the vertical force needed to pull

a wall stuck pipe free given the following
data: Also, what factor determines
whether this force can be applied?

Vertical hole dia: 12.25 in

Drillcollar length: 60ft
Drillcollar OD: 8 in
Wallcake thickness: 3mm
Pressure differential: 500 psi
Embedded area: 3.75 in2/in
Friction factor: 0.2

15. From the data given, find the tension that

should be applied when backing off at the
top of the drillcollars:

Length of drillpipe: 1500m

OD of drillpipe: 5”
Nominal weight of pipe: 19.5 lb/ft

Weight of blocks: 18000 lbs
