The following is a translation of a short article by Shaykh Abdur-Rahman bin Naasir al-Barraak
(hafidhahullaah) which contains brief comments on the meanings of the Adhkaar in the Salaah found

‫اﻟﺮﺣﯿﻢ‬
ّ ‫اﻟﺮﺣﻤﻦ‬
‫ﺑﺴﻢ اﷲِ ﱢ‬
ِ
With the Name of Allaah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
ّ ‫ اﷲ ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ أﻛﺒﺮ ِﻣﻦ‬:‫ﺗﻜﺒﯿﺮ ُة اﻹﺣﺮام "اﷲ أﻛﺒﺮ" أي‬.
‫ﻛﻞ ﺷﻲء‬
Takbeeratul-Ihraam: “Allaahu Akbar” meaning Allaah the Most High is greater than everything.
َ
،‫ ﺗﻘ ّﺪس اﺳﻤﻚ‬:"‫ "ﺗﺒﺎرك اﺳﻤﻚ‬،‫ إﺛﺒﺎت اﻟﻜﻤﺎل ﷲ ﻣﻊ اﻟﻤﺤﺒّﺔ واﻟﺘﻌﻈﯿﻢ‬:"‫ "وﺑﺤﻤﺪك‬،‫ ﺗﻨﺰﯾﻪ اﷲ ﻋﻦ ﺟﻤﯿﻊ اﻟﻨﻘﺎﺋﺺ‬:"‫"ﺳﺒﺤﺎﻧﻚ اﻟﻠﻬ ّﻢ‬ ‫دﻋﺎء اﻻﺳﺘﻔﺘﺎح‬
ّ
‫ ﻻ ﻣﻌﺒﻮد ﺑﺤﻖ إﻻ أﻧﺖ‬:"‫ "ﻻ إﻟﻪ ﻏﯿﺮك‬،‫ ﺟﻠﺖ ﻋﻈﻤﺘﻚ وﺳﻠﻄﺎﻧﻚ‬:"‫"ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ ﺟﺪك‬
The Du’a of al-Istiftah: “Subhaanaka Allaahumma”: Allaah is free from every deficiency and
imperfection, “wa bihamdika” affirming the perfection for Allaah along with love and veneration.
“Tabaraka-s-muka” hallowed and sanctified is your Name “Ta’aala Jadduka” majestic is your
magnificence and dominance, “La ilaha Ghayruka” none is worthy of worship in truth except You.
‫ ﻓﻲ ذاﺗﻪ وﺻﻔﺎﺗﻪ‬:"‫ "اﻟﻌﻈﯿﻢ‬،‫ ﺗﻨﺰﯾﻪ اﷲ ﻋﻦ ﺟﻤﯿﻊ اﻟﻨﻘﺎﺋﺺ‬:"‫اﻟﺮﻛﻮع "ﺳﺒﺤﺎن رﺑّﻲ اﻟﻌﻈﯿﻢ‬
ّ ‫ذﻛﺮ‬.
The Dhikr of Ar-Rukoo: “Subhaan Rabbiyal’Aatheem” Allaah is free from every imperfection,
“Al-Atheem” (The Most Magnificent) in His Essence and in His Attributes.
‫ﻟﻚ اﻟﻤﺪح واﻟﺜﻨﺎء ﻛﻠّﻪ‬
َ ‫ ﻣﻌﻨﺎه‬:"‫ "رﺑّﻨﺎ ﻟﻚ اﻟﺤﻤﺪ‬،‫اﺳﺘﺠﺎب َاﷲ دﻋﺎء َﻣﻦ ﺣﻤﺪه‬
َ :"‫اﻟﺮﻛﻮع "ﺳﻤﻊ اﷲ ﻟِ َﻤﻦ ﺣﻤﺪه‬
ّ ‫ﻟﺮﻓﻊ ِﻣﻦ‬.
ّ
Raising from ar-Rukoo: “SamiAllaahu liman Hamidah” Allaah answers the du’aa of the one who
praises Him, “Rabbanaa Lakal-Hamd” meaning all extolment and praise is for You.
ّ ‫ ِﻣﻦ‬:"‫ "اﻷﻋﻠﻰ‬،‫ ﺗﻨﺰﯾﻪ اﷲ ﻋﻦ ﺟﻤﯿﻊ اﻟّﻨﻘﺎﺋﺺ‬:"‫اﻟﺴﺠﻮد "ﺳﺒﺤﺎن رﺑّﻲ اﻷﻋﻠﻰ‬
‫ﻛﻞ ﺷﻲء ﻋﺎل‬ ّ ‫ذﻛﺮ‬.
The Dhikr of as-Sujood: “Subhaana Rabbiyal-Aa’laa” Allaah is free from every imperfection “Al-Aa’la”
(the Most High) higher and exalted above everything.
‫ ﻓﻬﻮ ﻧﻮع ﻣﻦ اﻻﺳﺘﻐﻔﺎر‬،‫ ﻃﻠﺐ اﻟﻤﻐﻔﺮة ِﻣﻦ اﷲ‬:"‫اﻟﺴﺠﺪﺗﯿﻦ "رﺑﻲ اﻏﻔﺮ ﻟﻲ‬
ّ ‫دﻋﺎ ُء اﻟﺠﻠﺴﺔ ﺑﯿﻦ‬.
The Du’a of sitting between the two prostrations: “Rabbighfir lee” Seeking the forgiveness from
Allaah, so it is a type of seeking forgiveness (al-Istighfaar).
‫واﻟﺮﺣﻤﺔ‬
ّ ‫ﺑﺎﻟﺴﻼﻣﺔ‬ ّ ‫إن ﻛﺎن‬- ‫ ودﻋﺎء ﻟﻠﻤﺼﻠّﯿﻦ‬،‫ دﻋﺎء ﻟﻠﻤﻼﺋﻜﺔ‬:"‫"اﻟﺴﻼم ﻋﻠﯿﻜﻢ ورﺣﻤﺔ اﷲ‬
ّ -‫اﻟﺘﺴﻠﯿﻢ ﻣﻦ إﻣﺎم وﻣﻌﻪ ﺟﻤﺎﻋﺔ‬ ّ
ّ ‫اﻟﺘﺴﻠﯿﻢ‬
At-Tasleem: “Assalaamu alaykum wa Rahmathullaah” a prayer for the angels and a prayer for those
who are praying if the Tasleem is from the Imaam and the Jamaa’ah with him for safety and mercy.
‫اﻟﺼﻔﺎت‬ ّ :‫"اﻟﻄﯿﺒﺎت ﷲ" أي‬
ّ ‫اﻟﻄﯿﺒﺎت ﻛﻠّﻬﺎ ﷲ ِﻣﻦ‬ ّ ،‫اﻟﺼﻠﻮات ﻛﻠّﻬﺎ؛ ﻓﺮﺿﻬﺎ وﻧﻔﻠﻬﺎ ﷲ‬ ّ ،‫اﻟﺘﻌﻈﯿﻢ ﻛﻠّﻪ ﷲ‬
ّ :‫"اﻟﺼﻠﻮات" أي‬ ّ :"‫"اﻟﺘﺤﯿﺎت ﷲ‬
ّ :‫اﻟﺘﺸﻬﺪ‬
ّ ‫دﻋﺎء‬
‫ﺒﺎ‬‫ﯾﻘﺒﻞ ّإﻻ ﻃﯿ‬
ُ ‫)إن اﷲَ ﻃﯿﱞﺐ ﻻ‬ ّ ‫ وﻟﻪ‬،‫)واﻷﻓﻌﺎل‬.
ّ :‫ وﻓﻲ اﻟﺤﺪﯾﺚ‬،‫اﻟﻄﯿﺒﺎت ِﻣﻦ أﻋﻤﺎل اﻟﻌﺒﺎد وأﻗﻮاﻟﻬﻢ‬
The Du’a of at-Tashahhud: “At-Tahiyyatu lillaahi” All glorification and magnification is for Allaah,
“Was-Salaawat” meaning all of the prayers, the obligatory ones and the voluntary ones are for
Allaah, “At-Tayyibaat” meaning at-Tayyibaat (all of what is good and pure) belongs to Allaah with
regards to His Attributes and Actions (i.e. they are all pure and perfect) and for Him is the Tayyibaat
from the actions of the servants and their statements, and there occurs in the Hadeeth, “Indeed
Allaah is Tayyib (Pure) and does not accept anything except what is Tayyib (Pure).”
ّ ،‫ وﻛﻠّﻬﺎ ِﻣﻦ اﷲ ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ‬،‫ واﻟﺒﺮﻛﺔ‬،‫واﻟﺮﺣﻤﺔ‬
"‫"اﻟﺴﻼم ﻋﻠﯿﻨﺎ وﻋﻠﻰ ﻋﺒﺎد اﷲ‬ ّ ،‫ﺑﺎﻟﺴﻼﻣﺔ‬ َ ‫اﻟﺴﻼم‬
ّ ‫ دﻋﺎء ﻟﻠّﻨﺒﻲ‬:"‫ﻋﻠﯿﻚ أﯾّﻬﺎ اﻟّﻨﺒﻲ ورﺣﻤﺔ اﷲ وﺑﺮﻛﺎﺗﻪ‬ ّ
‫اﻟﺴﻤﺎء واﻷرض‬ّ ‫اﻟﺼﺎﻟﺤﯿﻦ ﻓﻲ‬
ّ ‫ وﻟﻌﺒﺎد اﷲ‬،‫ واﻟﺤﻔﻆ‬،‫ﺑﺎﻟﺴﻼﻣﺔ‬
ّ ‫ ﻫﺬا دﻋﺎء ِﻣﻦ اﻟﻌﺒﺪ ﻟﻨﻔﺴﻪ‬:"‫اﻟﺼﺎﻟﺤﯿﻦ‬.

“As-Salaamu alayka Ayyuhaan-Nabiyyu wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakatuhu” is a prayer for the
Prophet for safety, mercy, and blessings and all of it is from Allaah the Most High. “As-Salaamu
alaynaa wa alaa Ebaadillaahis-Saaliheen” this is a supplication from the servant for himself for
safety and preservation and for the righteous servants of Allaah in the heavens and the earth.
ّ ‫أﻗﺮ ﻣﻮﻗًﻨﺎ‬
‫ﺪا ﻋﺒﺪاﷲ ورﺳﻮﻟﻪ‬‫ﺑﺄن ﻣﺤﻤ‬ ّ ‫ "أﺷﻬ ُﺪ‬،‫ﻣﻮﻗﻦ ﺑﺄّﻧﻪ ﻻ ﻣﻌﺒﻮد ﺑﺤﻖ إﻻ اﷲ‬
‫ ﱡ‬:‫ﺪا رﺳﻮل اﷲ" ﻣﻌﻨﺎه‬‫أن ﻣﺤﻤ‬ ٌ ‫ ﱡ‬:‫أﺷﻬ ُﺪ أن ﻻ إﻟﻪ إﻻ اﷲ" ﻣﻌﻨﺎه‬
‫أﻗﺮ وأﻧﺎ‬
‫إﻟﻰ ﺟﻤﯿﻊ اﻟﻨﺎس‬.
“Ash-Hadu an La ilaha illaAllaah” its meaning is that I affirm and I have certainty that there is none
worthy of worship in truth except Allaah. “Ash-Hadu anna Muhammadan Rasoolullaah” its meaning
is that I affirm with certainty that Muhammad is the servant of Allaah and His Messenger to all
people.
"،‫أﺛﻦ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻋﺒ ِﺪ ِك ورﺳﻮﻟِ ِﻚ ﻣﺤﻤﱟﺪ ﻋﻨﺪ اﻟﻤﻼﺋﻜﺔ‬ ّ ‫ ﯾﺎ اﷲ ﱢ‬:‫ﺻﻞ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻣﺤﻤّﺪ" ﻣﻌﻨﺎه‬ ‫اﻟﻠﻬ ّﻢ ﱢ‬
ِ :‫ اﻟﺜﻨﺎء؛ اﻟﻤﻌﻨﻰ‬:‫اﻟﺼﻼة ِﻣﻦ اﷲ‬
ّ ‫ وﻣﻌﻨﻰ‬،‫ﺻﻞ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻣﺤﻤّﺪ‬
"‫ وﻋﻠﻰ آل إﺑﺮاﻫﯿﻢ‬،‫ "ﻛﻤﺎ ﺻﻠﱠﯿﺖ ﻋﻠﻰ إﺑﺮاﻫﯿﻢ‬،‫ واﺗﺒﺎﻋﻪ‬،‫ وأﻗﺎرﺑﻪ‬،‫ وذرﯾﺘﻪ‬،‫أزواﺟﻪ‬
ُ ُ ،‫آل ﻣﺤﻤﱟﺪ‬
‫ ﻫﻢ‬:‫وآل ﻣﺤﻤﱟﺪ‬ ‫ﱢ‬
ِ ‫وﺻﻞ ﻋﻠﻰ‬ :‫"وﻋﻠﻰ آل ﻣﺤﻤّﺪ" ﯾﻌﻨﻲ‬
‫ﱠ‬
‫ ﻣﺜﻞ ﻣﺎ ﺻﻠﯿﺖ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻧﺒﻲ اﷲ إﺑﺮاﻫﯿﻢ اﻟﺨﻠﯿﻞ وﻋﻠﻰ آﻟﻪ‬:‫أي‬.
“Allaahumma Salli alaa Muhammad” its meaning is Allaah send Salaah upon Muhammad and the
meaning of Salaah from Allaah is praise and good mention, the meaning is then: commend your
servant and your messenger Muhammad to the angels. “Wa alaa Ali Muhammad” meaning, and
send Salaah upon the Aal of Muhammad and the Aal of Muhammad are his wives, his offspring, his
relatives, and his followers. “Kama Salayta alaa Ibraaheem wa alaa Ali Ibraaheem” meaning: “Just
like what you sent of Salaah (lofty commendations) upon the Prophet of Allaah, Ibraaheem
al-Khaleel and upon his Aal.
ّ ‫ وﻫﻮ‬،‫ ِﻣﻦ اﻟﻤﺠﺪ‬:"‫ "وﻣﺠﯿﺪ‬،‫ أي ﻣﺤﻤﻮد‬:"‫ وﻣﻌﻨﻰ "ﺣﻤﯿﺪ‬،‫ اﻟﺤﻤﯿﺪ واﻟﻤﺠﯿﺪ اﺳﻤﺎن ِﻣﻦ أﺳﻤﺎء اﷲ‬:"‫إّﻧﻚ ﺣﻤﯿ ٌﺪ ﻣﺠﯿ ٌﺪ‬.
"‫اﻟﺮﻓﻌﺔ واﻟﻜﻤﺎل‬
“Innaka Hameedun Majeed” Al-Hameed and al-Majeed are two Names from the Names of Allaah,
and the meaning of “Hameed” is Mahmood (the praiseworthy) and “Majeed” is from al-Majd (the
glorious) and He is the Exalted and the Perfect.

"‫ﺟﻌﻠﺖ‬ َ
‫ أي ﻣﺜﻞ ﻣﺎ‬:"‫ﺑﺎرﻛﺖ ﻋﻠﻰ إﺑﺮاﻫﯿﻢ وﻋﻠﻰ آل إﺑﺮاﻫﯿﻢ‬ ‫ "ﻛﻤﺎ‬،‫ اﺟﻌﻞ اﻟﺒﺮﻛﺔ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻣﺤﻤّﺪ واﺗﺒﺎع ﻣﺤﻤّﺪ‬:"‫وﺑﺎرك ﻋﻠﻰ ﻣﺤﻤّﺪ وﻋﻠﻰ آل ﻣﺤﻤّﺪ‬
ٌ‫ إّﻧﻚ ﺣﻤﯿ ٌﺪ ﻣﺠﯿﺪ‬،‫ وﻋﻠﻰ اﺗﺒﺎع إﺑﺮاﻫﯿﻢ‬،‫اﻟﺒﺮﻛﺔ ﻋﻠﻰ إﺑﺮاﻫﯿﻢ‬.
“Wa Baarik alaa Muhammad wa alaa Ali Muhammad” place blessings upon Muhammad and the
following of Muhammad, “Kama Baarakta alaa Ibraaheem wa alaa Ali Ibraaheem” meaning like what
you placed of blessings upon Ibraaheem and the following of Ibraaheem, “Innaka
Hameedun-Majeed".
