3. General Description
The HFE95-20D espresso maker, for its dimensions, weight, electrical and water
line couplings, is interchangeable and compatible with coffee makers currently in
service and because of the absence of a pressurized boiler, there is no danger of
explosion.
All applicable placards, identification tags, particular instructions for operation and
the warnings of potential danger are in compliance with the applicable regulations.
A. General Technical Characteristics
All materials used are of aeronautical type and treated to withstand corrosion.
All sharp corners and angles of the espresso maker are rounded to avoid
injury.
Particular attention has been taken to guarantee the highest hygiene and for
rapid and easy cleaning of its parts.
B. Mechanical Specification
In general, since the espresso maker is destined for aeronautical use, the
mechanical functions are in compliance with the highest quality standards.
In order to minimize electrolytic corrosion between aluminum alloy parts and
stainless steel structures, all light alloy parts are anodized prior to assembly.
C. Bottom and Frame
These parts are constructed of milled aluminum to guarantee its strength.
D. Top and Handle
The top of the espresso maker is black anodized aluminum. There is a
recessed handle that can be used to transport the unit when disconnected
from its galley compartment.
E. Heat Exchangers
There are three exchangers, two for the sections that produces coffee and
one for the section that produces steam, all made from anodized/ Teflon
coating aluminum, which heat the water only as it flows through the
exchangers and therefore there is no increase in the pressure.
F. Electrovalves
There are two types of electrovalves. “Two way” electrovalves control the
water flow by opening and closing. “Three way” electrovalves work the same
way but also provides a path for the waste water to exit the system.
G. Pumps
The water is pumped by a membrane vibration system that provides water to
the heat exchangers.

H. Flowmeters
Controls the preprogrammed amount of water necessary to make an espresso or
a long coffee and also acts as a safety sensor for the complete waterline system
(e.g. if a waterline breaks, the water flow stops and the flowmeter will inform the
CPU, which automatically turns the espresso maker into Fail condition.).
I. Microswitch
It is a protection feature so that the espresso maker can not operate with the
handle in the upright position.
J. Transformer
It is used to decrease the voltage from 115V to 21V for the electrovalves and
other electronic components using low voltage. The transformer is equipped with
an internal thermal fuse and an external current fuse.
K. Temperature Probes
Reads the surface temperature of the heat exchangers which is transmitted to
the CPU. When the heat exchangers have reached their working temperature the
probes transmit this to the CPU, who controls the LED board.
L. Thermal Circuit Breaker
They are an overheat protection that can be manually rearmed. One thermal
circuit breaker is placed on each phase of the heating elements, three per
exchanger.
M. Electrical Specification
All electrical components are in compliance with applicable military or other
internationally recognized standards.
N. Microcontroller
The microcontroller consists of a single chip. Operating on internal software, it is
possible to perform modifications on any functional cycle, personalizing it to
exact customer requirements.
O. Electrical Connections and Wiring
High temperature resistant and fireproof wiring is used throughout the espresso
maker. Suitable anchorage assures that all wiring does not interfere with any
metal parts. The use of protective sleeves around critical parts assures
protection against wire chafing. Critical connections, due to their closeness to
potential humid areas, are treated on the surface with a special coating.

P. Circuit Breaker
To protect the galley electrical system against overload due to possible failure of
the espresso maker, there is a three phases circuit breaker (10 Amps per phase)
mounted between the electrical wiring of the unit and the supply connector. The
reset knob of the circuit breaker is positioned on the back of the unit.
Q. Circuit Boards
The electronic part of the HFE95-20D espresso maker uses circuit boards. The
installation of the components are in accordance with MIL STD 2000, as are all
inspection procedures. The most critical components are anchored to the circuits
by means of a specific fixative resin to protect against vibration.
The circuit boards are also treated with a protective coating on the surface to
protect against fungus, humidity and premature aging.
(1) CPU BOARD - receives signals from analogue and digital inputs which are:
the pressure safety switch, handle microswitches, flowmeters, piezoelectric
switches from the front panel, temperature probes. The CPU board also
sends out signals (according to the software in the microcontroller) to
supply the outputs which are : electrovalves, pumps, resistor, LEDs on the
front panel, relays installed on the 24V board and 115V board.
(2) 24V BOARD – receives the 21 Vac from the transformer and rectifies it to
24 Vdc in order to supply electrovalves and other boards.
(3) 115V BOARD – is used to filter the115 Vac three phase power supply and
via a relay it connects the input power supply to the other boards.
(4) PUMP BOARD – rectifies the 115Vac, 400Hz to a Vdc used to supply the
pumps.
(5) POWER BOARD - is the power circuit which controls the switching of the
three phases 115Vac, 400Hz for the heat exchanger resistors and converts
the 24 Vdc coming from the 24V board into 5 Vdc in order to supply the
microcontroller.
(6) LED BOARD - is designed to display information on the front panel and
amplifies the signals coming from the front panel.

DISASSEMBLY
1. General
To proceed with disassembly, refer to the key index numbers as mentioned on the
exploded view illustrations in the IPL section.
2. Procedures
CLEANING
1. General
The unit must be kept thoroughly cleaned and sanitized at all times to avoid bacteria
and other harmful substance buildup and thereby maintaining public health standards.
A thorough cleaning is needed before and after any maintenance or repair work is
performed.
Disconnect the appliance prior to any cleaning operation and leave it to cool.
If necessary, clean the appliance casing by using a damp sponge.
A. Any cleaning fluids or materials used must have the following characteristics:
(1) Non-flammable, non-toxic and non-abrasive.
(2) Odorless and no harmful vapors or fumes.
(3) Non-corrosive.
(4) Leaves no residual film.
(5) Harmless to stainless steel, aluminum and rubber.
2. Cleaning
CAUTION: DO NOT USE ABRASIVE CLOTH, CHLORINE BLEACH BASED
CLEANING AGENTS OR OTHER SPIRITS AND SOLVENTS.
CAUTION: DO NOT USE METAL POLISH/CLEANER ON ANY INTERNAL PARTS
OF THE ESPRESSO MAKER.
A. Bring the handle down into the locked position.
B. Press the "ON/OFF" button. The "ON/OFF" indicator will illuminate. Wait for the
temperature indicator light "READY" to illuminate, when it does the machine is
ready to operate.
C. Press the "SMALL CUP" button. After a few seconds, the water flows into the
filter cup.
D. When the water has reached its preset amount it stops automatically.
F. Press the "STEAM SYMBOL" button to start the steam function. Let the steam
flow through the outlet until it automatically stops.
CHECK
GENERAL
Inspections and checks must be carried out to unserviceable HFE95-20D espresso
makers to ascertain the level of repair work to be performed. All inspections and
checks must be carried out by authorized and qualified personnel only.
1. Preventive Maintenance
A. SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE
This section shall be divided in 3 sub-services (1), (2) and (3) designated as:
(1) Every 1 year/2500FH whichever comes first for which the following checks
shall be performed:
• Replace coffee filter
• Replace coffee O-ring
• Replace mushroom
• Replace spring
• Replace unidirectional valve
• Replace coffee electrovalves
• Replace steam electrovalves
• Inspect elbow adapters
• Inspect electronic boards
• Inspect electrical connectors
• Clean hydraulic circuit: 1. Descaling; 2. Sanification
• Clean unit (external and internal)
(2) Every 3 years/7500FH whichever comes first for which the following checks
shall be performed:
• Level “A” check
• Inspect/replace heating elements
• Inspect piping
• Inspect bearing ball
• Inspect elbow adapters
• Inspect/replace power connectors
(3) Every 6 years/14000FH whichever comes first for overhaul in Iacobucci H.Q.
(Head Quarters) repair station. The following checks shall be performed:
• All the checks performed at levels A and B
• Inspect/replace piping
• Inspect/replace flowmeters
• Replace pumps
• Replace electronic boards
• Inspect/replace mechanical parts
NOTE: If the espresso maker fails to operate for any of the above mentioned
procedures, see “Testing and Fault Isolation”, page 1001.
B. Visual Inspection
(1) Visually inspect all assembled mechanical parts for damage.
(2) Visually inspect all electrical assemblies such as printed circuit boards and
soldering joints for damage.
(5) Visually inspect all water lines and drainage for leaks or damage.
NOTE: The "STEAM" function button, if pressed, will start the steam
feature.
F. Security during Operation
(1) Bring the handle down as if you were preparing an espresso.
(2) Select any of the two coffee selection buttons to start a brewing cycle.
During the cycle, lift the handle and check that the machine stops brewing.
A small quantity of water is allowed to drip.
G. Missing Water
(1) Prepare the HFE machine for a brewing cycle with a coffee pod inserted.
(2) Lower the handle and start the brew cycle.
(3) During the brewing cycle close the water output on the test bench. Check
that after approximately 30 seconds the machine stops and the "NO
WATER" LED illuminates.
H. Automatic Brewing Test
(1) Prepare the HFE machine for a brewing cycle. Select the "SMALL CUP"
button and check that the machine brews and stops automatically after
cycle completion.
(2) Repeat the step above using the "LARGE CUP" function.
(3) Repeat the steps above for the other section.
NOTE: On the front operating panel there is a "FAIL" LED which should not
illuminate during any of the brewing cycles, except during the initial
auto-check phase.
If this "FAIL" LED illuminates the machine will automatically shut down
since it indicates a fault somewhere in the HFE machine system.
NOTE: If the espresso maker fails to operate for any of the above mentioned
procedures, see “Testing and Fault Isolation”, page 1001.
2. Daily Maintenance
The following steps have to be performed after every flight.
A. The steam spout must be changed.
B. A cycle for each coffee section has to be performed without a coffee pod inserted
to clean the coffee pod holders, filters and the drain system.
D. The espresso maker shall be cleaned so that no coffee or coffee grains are left
visually in the machine.
REPAIR
1. General
The design of the HFE95-20D is such that removing and replacing damaged parts is
both easy and economical, therefore there are no particular repair instructions.
Repair of detailed parts and/or components shall not be considered economical, or
reliable. However, we offer some repair recommendations as follows and repair work
should follow standard workshop practices and procedures.
A. Repair Recommendations
(1) Do not attempt to repair any damaged parts by bending or twisting.
(2) Any parts that are cracked must be removed and replaced.
(3) Surface scratches on aluminum or stainless steel parts or other surface
deformations can be removed using a metal polisher/cleaner. If this
procedure does not work satisfactorily, proceed to lightly file damaged
surface using a fine grade emery cloth (do not use sandpaper) and re-
polish with a metal polisher/cleaner.
ASSEMBLY
1. General
2. Procedure
NOT APPLICABLE
1. General
All assemblies, sub-assemblies, and any sub-sub-assemblies and detailed parts of
the espresso maker considered to be replaceable for reasons of wear, age,
damage, or other, are illustrated and listed by part number in this section.
A. Assembly Breakdown
Each assembly listed is immediately followed by a listing of its component
parts properly intended to show their relationship to the assembly. Item
numbers in the parts list are keyed to corresponding item numbers in the
accompanying exploded illustration views.
B. Part Identification
(1) When a Part Number is not known
Check through the illustrations and identify the part by appearance.
Note the item number in the accompanying parts list to find the
appropriate part number, description, and quantity required for that
application.
(2) When a Part Number is known
Turn to the numerical index and locate the part number. The
corresponding figure and item numbers appear in the columns to the
right.
2. Numerical Index
The numerical index lists all parts ever used in the construction of the espresso
maker. It is arranged in alpha-numerical order with part number arranged at the
extreme left-hand position and continuing from left to right, one position at a time.
The order of precedence in beginning the part number arrangement is as follows:
Numerals 0 through 9; Letters A through Z.
C. NOMENCLATURE
Contains nomenclature of the applicable part numbers, indented to indicate
their relationship as follows:
1234567
Assembly or installation assembly (RF) number

D. EFFECTIVITY (EFF) CODE COLUMN
This column establishes part relationships with assemblies which are
basically similar but have minor deviations or modifications. These
assemblies are assigned reference letters (i.e. A,B,C,D,E...).
Parts which are not common to all configurations but are associated with one
or more of the coded lead items will carry the letter(s) assigned to the lead
item with which it is associated. Where a part is common to all lead items the
effectivity code column is left blank.
E. TOTAL REQUIRED (TOT REQ) COLUMN
This column contains the quantity of a specific catalog sequence numbered
part required to build sequence of only one (where more than one exists),
next higher sub-sub- assembly, sub-assembly, assembly, or installation level
as applicable. For bulk items, the letters ‘AR’ are inserted to indicate ‘as
required’. Where items are listed for purposes of reference, ‘RF’ is inserted.
