The parts underlined with dots in this Standard are the matters modified or not specified in the corresponding International Standards. 1 Scope This Japanese Industrial Standard specifies moulded rubber boots used at end closures on automotive drum type brake wheel cylinders using a non- petroleum-base brake fluid to prevent the wheel cylinders from penetrating of foreign matter, moisture and the like (hereafter referred to as "boot" Remarks: The International Standards corresponding to this Standard are listed as follows: ISO 4927: 1978 Road vehicles — Elastomeric boots for drum type hydraulic brake wheel cylinders using a non-petroleum base hydraulic brake fluid (service temperature 120 °C maximum) ISO 6117: 1980 Road vehicles — Elastomeric boots for drum type hydraulic brake wheel cylinders using a non-petroleum base hydraulic brake fluid (service temperature 100 "C max.) 2 Normative references The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this Standard. Alternatively, a micro size international rubber hardness tester for the M method specified in 4 of JIS K 6253 may be used upon agreement between the parties concerned with delivery. Where a rubber anvil is used for the test, it shall have a hardness in the same range as a boot being tested. 6.1.3 Procedure b) Determination of international rubber hardness For determination of international rubber hardness, 4.5.2 of JIS K 6253 shall be applied. 6.1.4 Expression of test results For expression of the test results, the medium value (*) determined at five points per boot shall be taken and rounded according to JIS Z 8401 to be expressed in a whole number, as specified in 5.6 or 4.6 of JIS K 6253. The mean value on the two boots shall be reported. Note ?) The value positioning at middle for an odd number of determined values or the mean of the two middle values for an even number when they are arranged in order of magnitude. 6.2 Aging test 6.2.1 Specimens Two boots shall be used as test specimens. 6.2.2 Apparatus The apparatus shall be as follows: a) [Test oven For the test oven, that specified in 4.2 of JIS K 6257 shall be used. b) Hardness tester The hardness tester shall be in accordance with 6.1.2. 6.2.3 Test condition The test condition shall be as given in Table 4. Class 3 150 +2 8 D 2608 : 1998 6.2.4 Procedure The|test procedure shall be as follows: a) Hardness determination For the hardness determination, following determination of the hardness before test (Hc) by the method of 6.1.3, perform the test specified in 4.4 of JIS K 6257 under the conditions given in Table 4 and, after the test the hardness (#,) shall be determined by the same method. b) State After the testing of a), examine for crack conditions when the|boot is flexed to the service condi eneration and surface ion. 6.2.5 Calculation The hardness change shall be calculated from the following formula. An Hi - He where, 6.2.6 Expression of test An : hardness change Ho : hardness before test Hy ; hardness after test results For the hardness change, the values obtained from the calculation of 6,2.5 shall be expressed according to 6.1.4 to report the mean of the two specimen values. 6.3 Fluid resistance tes' t 6.3.1 Test specimens| Test specimens shall be two pieces weighing approximately 3g to 5 g cut from act of two boots. For the boot not exceeding 5 g in mass, two products shall be used as 5; pecimens. 6.3.2 Apparatus The apparatus shall be as follows: a) Test oven The test oven shall be capable of maintaining the test temperature as given in Table 5| b) Test container The test container shall be in accordance with 6.3.2 of JIS D 2605. ) Hardness tester |The hardness tester shall be in accordance with 6.1.2. 6.3.3 Test condition | The fluid resistance test condition shall be as given in Table 5. JIS K 2238, Class 2 12d +2 veen the Parties, Class 3 15q +2 9 D 2608 : 1998 6.3.4 Procedure The test procedure shall be as follows: a) Cleansing of specimens Rinse the specimens in isopropyl alcohol or ethyl alcohol (hereafter both referred to as “alcohol") to remove adhered dirt, test fluid and the like, and wipe off the alcohol with a dry cloth. In the rinse, do not allow the specimens to remain in the alcohol for more than 30 s. b) Immersion test Putting the specimens into the weighing jar specified in 6.3.2 of JIS D 2605, pour-in 75 ml of test fluid, cap and place the jar in the pressure tight vessel. Sealing up the lid, place the vessel in the circulating air oven adjusted to the test temperature and for the duration given in Table 5. After ¢ompletion of the immersion, immerse the specimens into a flesh test fluid (at toom temperature) of the same kind for about 30 s to cool to the room temperature, ©) Determination of volume change ratio After cleansing the specimens by the jnethod of a), determine each specimen mass in air (m,) to 1 mg, next, determine the apparent mass in distilled water at room temperature (m,), and rinse again by a). Successively, performing the immersion test by b), then cleaning by a), immediately determine the specimen mass in air (ms), and further determine the apparent mass in distilled water at room temperature (m,), @) Determination of hardness For the hardness determination of each specimen, following the determination of hardness before test by 6.1.3, perform the immersion test by b) and, after cleaning by a) determine the hardness by the method of 6.1.3 e) State After the immersion test of bi, observe the surface condition of each specimen to examine for blisters and peelings. Remarks 1 Determinations and observations prescribed in c), d) and e) shall be made within 60 min of cleansing with alcohol after completion of the immersion test. 2 The tests c), d) and e) may be made on the same specimen. 6.3.5 Calculation The calculation shall be as follows: a) Volume change ratio The volume change ratio shall be calculated from the following formula. AD =D, De where, AD : interference after the test (mm) Dy : inside diameter of boot at fitting section with cylinder, piston or the like (mm) Dz : outside diameter of cylinder, piston or the like at boot fitting section (mm) | 9 1 D 2608 : 1998 6.4.6 Expression of test results Express the values obtained from the calculation of 6.4.5 by rounding off to the first decimal place according to JIS Z 8401, and report the mean of the two determined values. 6.5 [Low-temperature stroking test 6.5.1 Test specimens ‘Two boots shall be used as test specimens. 6.5.2 Apparatus The apparatus shall be in accordance with 6.7.2 of JIS D 2605, 6.5.3 Test\conditions The low-temperature stroking test conditions shall be as given in Table 7. After the period of exposure stroke the piston in the fixed length for six strokes at intervals of 30 s in the low-temperature chamber. Observe each boot for no separation from the assembled position on the cylinder, piston and the like during stroking. ‘After testing remove the specimens from the low-temperature chamber to leave them alone at room temperature for 24h + 1h. After the period of leaving alone, examine the boots for flexure cracks and appearance conditions. 6.6 Tension set test 6.6.1 Test specimens Three boots shall be used as test specimens. 6.6.2 Apparatus The apparatus shall be as follows: a) Test oven The test oven shall be that capable of maintaining the test temperature as given in Table 8. b) Mandrels Use stretching mandrels having a diameter (d;) which is 1.15 times the inside diameter of specimen boot at the attaching part to the cylinder, piston, etc. The mandrel shall be provided with a lead-in chamfer to prevent injuring of the boot, shaped as free of occurring abnormal deformation such as twisting, and have a polished machine finish. 6.6.3 Test conditions The tension set test conditions shall be as given in Table 8. | | 2 ‘1D 2608 : 1998 | | THble 8 Tension set test conditions Division | Test temperature | Duration Pre-stretch c h % Class1 | | 10042 7042 15 2 Class 2 120+ 2 Class 3 | | 15022 66.4 Procedure Previously measure the inside diameters of each specimen boot at the attaching part td the cylinder, piston and the like, in two directions at right angles to one another, ahd takethe average as the unaged inside diameter (d,). Next, assemble the boots on the mandrels of 6.6.2 and leave them alone in the oven to age at the test temperature|for the specified duration as given in Table 8. After leaving alone cool at room temperature for 1h, and remove the boots from the mandrel. After the period of rest, carry out the ozone resistance test according to 5.6 of JIS D 0205. ‘The test conditions shall be as given in Table 9. D 2608 : 1998 76.2 Apparatus The apparatus shall be in accordance with 4.2 of JIS K 6259. 7.6.3 Test condition The ozone resistance test apparatus shall be as given in Table 13. 7.6.4 Test method Carry out the ozone resistance test according to 4.5 of JIS K 6259, and examine the specimens for cracks under 2 x magnification.
