EXTERNAL LAB QUESTION PAPER

1. The surfaces of rectangular plate of 0.3 m by 0.4 m are subjected to the constant temperatures of
T1 = 100°C (bottom), T2 = 250°C (left), T3 = 150°C (top) and T4 = 300°C (right). The bar is
composed of copper with a thermal conductivity of 380 W/mK and a thermal diffusivity of α =
11.234×10-5 m2/s, both assumed to constant. Compute the temperature distribution (2D only)
within the wall using Ansys-fluent.
2. Consider a circular pipe having diameter 20 mm and thickness 2 mm as shown in figure below.
Water entering into the pipe with velocity of 4 m/s and temperature 25 oC. The pipe outer surface
is subjected to constant heat flux condition (Q=1000 W). Compute the temperature of water at
pipe exit using Ansys-Fluent. Also plot contours of temperature and velocity. Consider of the pipe
is 0.8 m.

3. Consider a rectangular flat plate having length, width and thickness is 500 mm,
300 mm and thickness 200 mm is kept inside rectangular duct as shown in figure given below .
Water is flowing over a plate with velocity of 4 m/s and temperature 25 °C. The plate bottom
surface is subjected to constant heat flux condition (Q=2000 W). Compute the temperature of
water at pipe exit using Ansys-Fluent. Also plot contours of temperature and velocity. Consider
length of the duct is 0.8 m.
4. Solve the following set of three simultaneous algebraic equations for x, y and z:
x + 3y -z=2
x - y -z=3
3x -5y=4
5. Solve the given transcendental equation and find f (0), f (1), f (2) and f (10)
f ( x )=x 3−3 x 2 + xlog ( x−1 ) +100
6. Differentiate the given equation w.r.t. ‘x’ within the limits -5 to 5 with an increment of 0.01.
y=x 3 + ( 2 x 2 )−x +3
7. Integrate the above equation w.r.t. ‘x’ within the limits 0 to π/2 with 5 equal parts.
dy
=x ¿
dx
8. Solve the given ordinary differential equation.
dx=2∗y +3∗exp ( x )
9. Find solution of a Tri-Diagonal Matrix using Thomas Algorithm.
10. Solve Parabolic Partial Differential Equation.
Problem Description: A wall 30 cm thick and infinite in other directions (see figure given
below) has an initial uniform temperature (Ti) of 38°C. The surface temperatures (Ts) at the two
sides are suddenly increased at 65 °C. The wall is composed of nickel steel (40% Ni) with a
diffusivity of α = 2.58×10-5 m2/s. Compute the temperature distribution within the wall as a
function of time. The step sizes to be employed are Δx = 0.05, Δt = 0.01

11. Consider steady state heat lost through a long straight fin of length of 6 cm, the temperature at
the fin base is 100oC and surrounding fluid at 20oC. Take m=2.5x103/m2. Obtain the
temperature distribution along the length of fin (using TDMA algorithm). Refer figure given
below.
