Design Overview

A lot of things can cause a bad power supply. Loose or corroded connections either at
home or on the electrical cables can cause voltage fluctuations, which leads to power surges,
spikes, and cuts. Examples of this can incorporate flickering lights, failure of electronic gear, and
obstruction of radio or TV reception. Power surges and spikes are dangerous and can be brought
about by lightning, power switching on the lines, household appliances drawing too much power,
strong winds causing lines to clash, etc. The effect of a bad power supply on electrical systems
can be very serious. They can cause unsettling of power to equipment resulting in an operational
setback, equipment instability, and collapse.
When a transformer steps up the voltage level of a circuit, it decreases the current
because the power remains constant. Therefore, AC power can be generated at one central
station. The voltage is stepped up for transmission over long distances at very low losses. The
voltage is stepped down again for final use. Since the transmission losses are proportional to the
square of the current, raising the voltage by a factor of 10 will reduce the transmission losses by
a factor of 100. Also, when the voltage is increased by a factor of 10, the current is decreased by
a factor of 10. This allows the use of much thinner conductors to transmit power.
Zener diodes can be used to provide a different output voltage. It is also used for voltage
regulation, as reference elements, surge suppressors, and in switching applications and clipper
circuits. The load voltage equals the breakdown voltage VZ of the diode. with the use of a diode,
the series resistors limit the currents and drop the excess voltage when the diode is conducting.
Design Rationale
This project was designed to be applied in radio frequencies and microwaves that are
commonly used on a daily basis. Communication devices such as cellphones, televisions, and
transmitters use radio frequencies to function. Microwaves are commonly utilized in satellite
interchanges, radars, and navigations, but other applications include medical treatments, drying
materials, and preparation of food. This was also designed to apply all the knowledge gained
from the previous experiments using the Multisim. Certain components have properties that
affect the whole design and in this case, Zener diodes are used to regulate the voltage. The usage
of Zener diodes in this power system could reduce the potential risks of accidents and/or
equipment failure.
