What Is Green Infrastructure?
Toolbox of methods and practices to
manage stormwater runoff from
developed land and mimic natural
hydrology.
Complimentary system that seeks to
improve water quality and reduce
water quantity by capturing runoff as
close to the source as possible (i.e.
where the rain drop falls) and
infiltrating, filtering, detaining, or
otherwise storing runoff for reuse.

Streets – GI Opportunities
Public right-of-way
Some streets are super
wide and not busy
Frequent re-
construction
Traffic calming
Landscaping amenity

Streets – GI Challenges
Runoff must drain
away quickly
Limited space
Utilities
Competing uses
(e.g., parking,
bicycle lanes)

Benefits of Streetscape GI
Bioretention: traffic calming, aesthetics
Tree pits: shade, cooling, aesthetics
Swales: aesthetics, barrier between
cars & sidewalks/bike lanes
Catch basin retrofits: catch sediment,
trash
Permeable pavements: less standing
water, reduced salt need
