ACTIVITY I:POSITION PAPER

If I were to, should we change our country’s name? why or why not?
If I were to decide I prefer not to change our country name. Filipinos who wants to
change the name, should just accept the fact that our country was named after the King
of Spain, embrace it and move on.
Yes,Philippines is named after King Philip II of Spain. We were colonized by Spain for
3 centuries and our culture is highly influenced by them. I know that they want a national
identity that is not link with our colonial past but we all know that ,that is a part of history.
Spain enriched our cultures. It has been a part of our history, their traditions they brought
are already part of our Philippine traditions,we have made better of them, adapted it to
our liking and change it to our needs. It is no longer Spanish culture but culture that
belong to the Philippines that is shared with Spain. To be honest one of the things that
makes our country unique and beautiful is because we are divered. Philippnes is a
mixture of a shared culture.
Changing our country means,we have to change documents,ID’s etc. Doing those
process will be difficult and expensive. I understand that Filipinos want to show of but
changing the name will not change the fact that we have been colonized for 3 centuries.
If we truly treasure our native roots, we should instead recover our traditions, values
enriching it,expanding it and strengthening it. We should also accept what happened it
the past, it has shaped our way of thinking, our actions, values, and learn from it.
