Question: 2c. What were the characteristics of
the cyclone? (Wind speed/ storm surge)
Answer: The Bhola Cyclone occurred from November 8th until November 13th starting in
the Bay of Bangladesh moving up toward east Pakistan. It remains the deadliest tropical
cyclone ever recorded and one of the world's deadliest natural disaster

Characteristics of the Bhola cyclone

Wind Speed: The average wind speed was 225.3 kilometers per hour or 140 miles per
hour. It reached its peak with winds of 185 km/h (115 mph) on November 10. By
11th November the wind speed had reached between 137- 145 kilometers per
hour or 85-90 miles per hour. The highest winds were 3-minute sustained: 185
km/h (115 mph). The meteorological station in Chittagong recorded winds of 144
km/h (89 mph) before its anemometer was blown off on November 12.
● Category of cyclone: Bhola cyclone was a Category 4 Cyclone on the
Saffir-Simpson scale and it indicates that the cyclone was a severe
tropical cyclone.

● Storm surges: The storm surges ranged from 20 feet to 35 feet on the
Ganges Delta. In the port at Chittagong, the storm tide peaked at about 4 m
(13 ft) above the average sea level, 1.2 m (3.9 ft) of which was the storm
surge.
● Wind pressure: The lowest pressure was the central pressure of 960 hPa
and in 28.35 in Hg.
● Fatalities: The Bhola cyclone killed from 300,000 to 500,000 people, the
Bhola cyclone holds the world record as the deadliest storm.
● Formation: The Bhola cyclone was formed on 3 November, 1970.
● Dissipation: The cyclone dissipated on 13 November, 1970.
