DISTANCE IN 3-SPACE; SPHERES

In 2-space the distance d between the points 𝑃1 (𝑥1 , 𝑦1 )and 𝑃2 (𝑥2 , 𝑦2 )is

(1)

In 3-space the distance d between the points 𝑃1 (𝑥1 , 𝑦1 , 𝑧1 )and

𝑃2 𝑥2 , 𝑦2 , 𝑧2 is

(2)

Recall that the standard equation of the circle in 2-space that has
center (𝑥0 , 𝑦0 ) and radius r is

This follows from distance formula (1) and the fact that the circle
consists of all points in 2-space whose distance from (𝑥0 , 𝑦0 )is r.
Analogously, the standard equation of the sphere in 3-space that
has center (𝑥0 , 𝑦0 , 𝑧0 )and radius r is

This follows from distance formula (2) and the fact that the sphere
consists of all points in 3-space whose distance from (𝑥0 , 𝑦0 , 𝑧0 )is r
