(FSSS) is designed to ensure the execution of a safe, orderly operating sequence in the start up and shutdown of fuel firing equipment and to prevent errors of omission and commission in following such a safe operating procedure.
The system provides protection, should there be a
malfunction of fuel firing equipment and associated air systems. The safety features of the system are designed for protection in most common emergency situations.

Basically the FSSS system is designed to perform the following functions: • Prevent any fuel firing unless a satisfactory furnace purge sequence has first been completed. • Prevent start-up of individual fuel firing equipment unless certain permissive interlocks have first been satisfied. • Monitor and control the proper sequence (Manual or Automatic) during start-up and shutdown of fuel firing equipment. • Make continued operation of fuel firing equipment subject to certain safety interlocks remaining satisfied. • Provide status feedback to the operator and in some cases, to the unit control system. • Provide flame supervision when fuel firing equipment is in service and affect a fuel trip upon certain adverse operating conditions. • Initiate a fuel trip when certain abnormal operating conditions exist. 03/27/2021 Gyanendra Sharma, NPTI Delhi OPERATIONAL FUNCTIONS OF FSSS FURNACE PURGE SUPERVISION SECONDARY AIR DAMPER MODULATION LIGHT/HEAVY OIL SUPERVISION MILL & FEEDER CONTROL, SUPERVISION FLAME SCANNER INTELLIGENCE BOILER TRIP PROTECTION

Boiler protections Master Fuel Trip is initiated by any one of the following conditions: • Less than fire ball and loss of +24V DC(N) at any elevation in service. • Drum level very low for more than 5 seconds. • Drum level very high for more than 10 seconds. • Both FD Fans off. • Both ID Fans off. • Air flow is less than 30% • Furnace pressure very low. • Furnace pressure very high.

Boiler protections • Loss of all fuel trip • Unit flame failure trip • Both emergency trip Push Buttons pressed (Operator initiated boiler trip) • Loss of reheater protection. • Loss of +24V DC(T) for more than 2 seconds • All Secondary Air Heaters off. • Water wall circulation not correct for more than 5 seconds • Boiler feed pumps tripped for more than 10 seconds
been designed for Energise to open and Energise to Close philosophy. However, field equipments are always on deenergise to close principle. This means any on/off device or equipment has to get a continuous command to change its present state and regain to the original state upon loss of this command.

In addition to the above,
The upper (elevations K,J,H,G&F) and lower (elevations E,D,C,B&A) fuel air dampers are opened and transfer to manual.
Transfer the auxiliary air control to manual and open all auxiliary air dampers.
After a “Master fuel trip” occurs, a “feed forward to furnace draft
control” signal is established for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds this signal is removed.

The fuel air damper control system positions the fuel air damper in proportion to the fuel- firing rate.
