WEEK 1

Activity no. 1: A LIFE CHANGING LETTER

Learning Target: I can explain the stages of infection

A. Crossword puzzle. Read the clues and complete the puzzle below.

Across
1. This is the interval between entrance of pathogen into the body to
the appearance of first symptoms.
2. This is the stage when the sick person exhibits signs and symptoms
specific to type of infections.
3. This is the interval when acute symptoms of infection disappears
(length depends on severity of infection and sick person’s state of
health).
Down
4. This is the interval from the onset of nonspecific signs and
symptoms to the appearance of more specific symptoms. Time when
microorganisms grow and multiply and the sick person may be more
capable of spreading disease to others.

B. Pick & Put. Choices of symptoms are written below. Pick the answers from the choices and write them on the columns that describe the stages.
Write the LETTER only.
Incubation Stage Prodromal Stage Illness Stage Convalescence Stage

Choices:
A. Length of recovery depends on B. Chickenpox, 2-3 weeks.Common C. Malaise, low- D. Common cold manifested by sore
severity of infection and patient’s   cold, 1- 2 days grade fever, throat, sinus congestion, rhinitis,
general state of health; take several days Influenza, 1-3 daysMumps, 15-18 fatigue mumps manifested by earache.
to months. days

Process questions:
1. Explain in your own words the graph of the stages of infection. Where did the arc start and where did it end? What does it mean? Explain the flow
of the arc. If you noticed, it started low, then up, then it goes down.

Activity no. 2: CHAIN LETTER
Learning Target: I can explain the chain of infection
A. Read the “chain letter” and fill-in the blanks with the correct word.
“THE CHAIN LETTER”
(1) P________________ is a disease-causing organism which includes bacteria, virus, parasitic worm, protozoa, and fungi and lives in the (2)
R__________________ which can be a living or non-living object. In order to be transmitted, the pathogen leaves the reservoir through the (3)
P_________ o____ E________, examples include the mouth, nose, anus, and other special body openings. The pathogen is then passed through a
direct or indirect (4) M________ of T______________ from one host to the next host. It is transmitted through a living vector like a mosquito or
flea. Some diseases like malaria have complicated life cycles involving more than one species. Some are transmitted by respiratory droplets, while
others are through blood contact, semen, or other secretions. Hand-to-mouth is a common mode for gastrointestinal pathogens. The organism
enters the body through the (5) P____________ o_____ E__________. Such as the nose, skin, or mouth. The portal of entry determines the type
of personal protective equipment (PPE) to use to keep health care workers, family, and visitors safe in the hospital. The (6)
S______________H__________ is a person with low immunity to disease. This includes the very old, and the immune suppressed (due to
genetics, transplant drugs, malnutrition, or viral infection like HIV).

B. Write the links of the chain of infection based on the story below.
Story…
Peter joined the school fun run; his desire is to win so he didn't mind if he was stepping on water wherein his feet was soaked. Even if this feels
uncomfortable because his feet were very itchy, he only removed his socks that evening that’s why it was very smelly.
He hanged it at the back of the refrigerator to dry and immediately went to sleep because he was so tired.
Early that morning, his brother John saw that sock hanged at the back of the refrigerator and used it thinking that it was clean.
Write your answer inside the box in the Chain of infection below. Remember that the elements in the chain are sequentially arranged.

Guide questions:
1. What causes Peter’s disease?
2. What is the place within which microorganisms can thrive and reproduce?
3. How did the microorganisms leave the reservoir?
4. How did the microorganisms transfer to John?
5. Where did the microorganisms enter John?
6. Who is the next host?

Chain of Infection

Reflective question:
Where you think is the best stage to CUT from the flow of infection and explain why you chose that stage?

IFL: Do you know that Gossiping is like a chain of infection? Gossiping (pathogen) is such an easy
habit to fall into. We often don't even realize that we are a carrier of this disease. We start out saying
something bad about the person, and then other person may make a comment-adds to it then pass it to other
“host”. Whether the rumor is true or false, once it starts spreading, it’s like a pandemic disease that is
difficult to stop.
If there is an ongoing issue, never take it to someone else in the form of gossip. Cut the “disease” by
breaking the chain. Remember that no one is perfect, including you, and you need to treat all your friends
with respect by honoring the Golden Rule “Do not do unto others, what you don’t want others do unto

you”. If you are a habitual gossip, others will eventually lose trust in you as a friend. Not only does it show bad manners but it also hurts friendships
and damages relationships. Once you say something, it is impossible to take it back, so always think before you speak.

Reflective question:
You overhear someone saying that your classmate looks pregnant. What would you do?

Activity no. 3: MODES OF TRANSMISSION

Learning Target: I can enumerate the modes of Infection
Fill in the shapes with the correct answers.

Activity no. 4: READ, ANALYZE & REACT

Learning Targets: I can recognize the signs and symptoms and effects of common communicable diseases
I can enumerate steps in the prevention and control of common communicable diseases
I can correct misconceptions, myths, and beliefs about common communicable disease
Read and analyze the three situations in the table and identify what kind of communicable disease is being described based on the signs and
symptoms given. By knowing how it is being transmitted in the last activity, you will be able to enumerate its prevention and control. In this, you are
to correct the myths and misconceptions of most common communicable diseases.
Situation 1:
One summer, my family went to Ilocos for our yearly summer vacation. At night my daughter had a fever and sore throat so I gave her a
medicine. In the morning, I saw rashes on her arms so I suspected measles. I had her occupy another room to prevent cross-infections.
After breakfast, my late mother-in-law brought my daughter out at the backyard and started scattering some rice while talking indistinctively. She
got some soil near a tree where my daughter played and rubbed it on my daughter’s arms, face, and feet. My mother-in-law did that because my
daughter while playing might have disturbed some spirits in the backyard.
Situation 2
My co-worker- is a homosexual “gay”. At workplace, we observe that he frequently visits the bathroom and complains of painful urination and
severe itching of his penis. He even shares that at night, he sweats even he doesn’t do anything. Lately, he looks yellowish and there are small

warts around his mouth and rashes begin to appear on his skin.
We suspect him to have STD and his friends are trying to avoid him. They are afraid that they are also infected since they usually shake hands,
hugging, sharing foods during snack time and share the same toilet.
Situation 3
One morning, I woke up feeling sick and tired. I had a splitting headache and it felt like something was pressing on my eyeballs and nothing
relieved the pain. Few days later, I had joint pains and developed strange rash all over my stomach. It wasn’t itchy- it was just flat red spots that
appeared in constellations all over my torso and around my belly button. I also had nosebleeds.
My friend told me that whatever happens around midnight on New Year dictates the tone and spirit of your coming year. I bought fruits and foods
and offer to the spirit and left it for few days until it’s spoiled. When it’s already spoiled I ate it and left no part of it. They said that by doing this,
it appeased the bad spirits.

Fill in the table base on the given situations.

Situation 1
1. Are the rashes the result of some disturbed spirit?
2. Can playing at the backyard harm some spirits?
3. Will scattering some rice around help heal the rashes?
4. Does rubbing the soil in the arms, face, and feet heal the rashes?
5. Do you agree with the belief of the mother-in-law?
