ASSIGNMEMT #1:
1. Identify and explain the different types of research according to category.

Types of Research
 Based on Application of Research Method
a. Pure Research- This type of research deals with the concepts, principles, or
abstract things. It aims to increase your knowledge about something.
b. Applied Research- Its intention is to apply the chosen research to societal
problems or issues and finding ways to make positive changes in the society.
 Based on Purpose of the Research
a. Descriptive Research- This type of research aims at defining or giving the
verbal portrayal or picture of a person, thing, event, group, situation, etc. This
is reliable to repeated research because its topic relates only to a certain period
or limited number of years. Based on the results of your descriptive studies
about a subject, you develop the inclination of conducting further studies on
such topic.
b. Correlational Research- It shows relationship or connectedness of two
factors, circumstances or agents called variables that affect the research. It is
only concerned in indicating the existence of a relationship, not the causes and
ways of the development of such relationship.
c. Explanatory Research- This type of research elaborates or explains not just
the reasons behind the relationship of two factors, but also the ways by which
such relationship exists.
d. Exploratory Research- Its purpose is to find out how reasonable or possible it
is to conduct a research study on a certain topic. Here, you will discover ideas
on topics that could trigger your interest in conducting research studies.
e. Action Research- This type of research studies on on-going practice of a
school, organization, community, or institution for the purpose of obtaining
results that will bring improvements in the system.
 Based on Type of Data Needed
a. Qualitative Research- It requires non-numeric data, which means that the
research uses words rather than number to express the results, the inquiry, or
investigation about people’s thoughts, beliefs, feelings, views, and lifestyles
regarding the object of the study. These opinionated answers from people are
not measurable; so, verbal language is the right way to express your findings
in a qualitative research.
Types of Qualitative Research:
 Case Study- This type of qualitative research usually takes place in the
field of social care, nursing, psychology, rehabilitation centers,
education, etc. This involves a long-time study of a person, group,
organization or situation. It seeks to find answers to why such thing
occurs to the subject. Finding the reason/s behind such occurrence
drives you to also delve into relationships of people related to the case
under study.
 Ethnography- Falling in the field of anthropology, ethnography is the
study of a particular cultural group to get a clear understanding of its
organizational set-up, internal operation and lifestyle. A particular
group reveals the nature or characteristics of their own culture through
the world perceptions of the cultural group’s members.
 Phenomenology- Coming from the word “phenomenon,” which means
something known through sensory experience. It refers to the study of
how people find their experiences meaningful. Its primary goal is to
make people understand their experiences about death of loved ones,
care for handicapped persons, friendliness of people, etc. In doing so,
other people with likewise understand the meanings attached to their
experiences. Those engaged in assisting people to manage their own
lives properly often do this qualitative kind of research.
 Historical Analysis- Central to this qualitative research method is the
examination of primary documents to make you understand the
connection of past events to the present time. The results of your
content analysis will help you specify phenomenological changes in
unchanged society through the years.
 Grounded Theory- Takes place when you discover new theory to
underlie your study at the time of data collection and analysis.
Through your observation on your subjects, you will happen to find a
theory that applies to your current study. Interview, observation, and
documentary analysis are the data gathering techniques for this type of
qualitative research.
b. Quantitative Research- Involves measurement of data. Thus, it presents
research findings referring to the number or frequency of something in
numerical forms (i.e., using percentages, fractions, number).
Types of Quantitative Research
 Non-Experimental Research- It is a way of finding out truths about a
subject by describing the collected data about such subject and
determining their relationships or connections with one another. Any
treatment or condition is not involved in this type of research. But
there is a measuring of variables here; hence, once you do a non-
experimental research, you deal with both qualitative and quantitative
data. Your desire to discover people’s thoughts, views, feelings and
attitude about a certain societal issue, object, place, or event causes
you to use non-experimental research.
 Experimental Research- It is a quantitative research that treats or
deals with the object or subject of the research in a definite or exact
manner and determines the extent of the effects or influence of the
treatment on the subject/object, then discovers the causes of such
effects. Two groups are involved in any experimental research: the
experimental group, the one on which the treatment or influence is
applied, and the control group, which does not receive any treatment.
The objects or subjects involved in these types of research are chosen
randomly or selected by chance, rather than by decision of the
researcher.
2. Research on present business decisions that have been guided by researches.
3. Identify business related problems that could be a research topic.
